Meredith A. Butler

Meredith A. Butler, assistant vice president for academic planning and development at the State University of New York at Albany, has been appointed director of university libraries and dean of the library faculty at the same institution, effective February 1. Butler has also served as associate for academic development and assistant director for planning and resources development in the SUNY at Albany libraries; head of public services at SUNY at Brockport; and bibliographer and head of the

Humanities Department at Syracuse University. She earned her BA and MA degrees at Ohio State University, and her MLS from Syracuse University. Awarded the State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Librarianship in 1980, Butler is also active in ACRL, the Library Administration and Management Association, the National Women’s Studies Association, and the National Association of Women Deans, Administrators and Counselors. She has published on a variety of subjects including copyright, the impact of technology on libraries, and electronic publishing, and has been a frequent speaker at state and national meetings on such topics as women and leadership development, fundraising, planning, and the future of libraries.

Ruth Moore Jackson, assistant director of libraries and chief administrator of public services at the University of North Florida, Jacksonville, for the past four years, has been named dean of libraries at West Virginia University, Morgantown. In her new role, Jackson will be responsible for development and management of the 2.5 million volumes and microforms contained in the Charles C. Wise, Jr. Library and its nine branches on three campuses. She will also oversee the West Virginia and Regional History Collection which contains over 4.5 million manuscript items.

Ruth Moore Jackson

Jackson received her bachelor’s degree from Hampton Institute, her MLS from Atlanta University, and her Ph.D. from Indiana University. Before joining the staff at UNF she held the positions of assistant education librarian, head reference librarian, and associate professor and coordinator of the library science program at Virginia State University. She has sèrved as visiting lecturer and teaching fellow at Indiana University and as visiting cataloger at Monroe County Public Library in Bloomington, Indiana. She is a member of ALA, ACRL, the Florida Library Association, and the Southeastern Library Association, and has served on a variety of academic committees and university service organizations. An active participator in numerous professional conferences and seminars, Jackson has contributed to two textbooks and is currently researching a third dealing with personnel management for libraries.

Three doctoral students at the School of Library and Information Science at the University of Pittsburgh have been recognized by the American Society of Information Science for exemplary scholarship in their field. Stephanie Haas won the ASIS/ISI Doctoral Dissertation Scholarship for her dissertation “A Procedure for Porting Natural Language Interfaces, Using a Case Hierarchy for Domain Analysis.” Stuart McLean and Charlotte Weise won Student Paper Awards for their paper “DIGRESS: A Deductive Interface to a Relational Database.”

Retirements

Dorice Des Chene, of the Chemistry-Biology Library at the University of Cincinnati, Ohio, retired at the end of August.

Herb Linville, acting assistant university librarian at the University of California, Santa Barbara, retired recently after 35 years of service.

William C. Lowe, assistant director for reference services at North Carolina State University, Raleigh, will retire in August. Lowe began his career in 1953 as a physicist with the Xerox Corporation. In 1958 he became librarian at Xerox, then joined NCSU Libraries in 1966 to establish the Technical Information Center. In 1971 he was appointed to his present position.

Maria Szivos, extension librarian at Brandon University, Manitoba, retired August 31. Szivos began her 27-year career at Brandon as a cataloger; she later became head of technical services and assistant director of library services, then served for over a year as acting director before becoming extension librarian. She was the first recipient of the Senate Award for Excellence in Community Service in recognition of her pioneering work as librarian for Inter-Universities North, a consortium of the three Manitoba universities which offers courses to residents in northern Manitoba.

Nellie Waltner, assistant director for technical services and collection management at North Carolina State University, Raleigh, will retire in June. Waltner began her career at NCSU Libraries as a support staff member in the Circulation Department from 1956-62, then left to attend the library science graduate program at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. After receiving her MLS she rejoined the NCSU staff as cataloger. In 1971 she was appointed head of the Acquisitions Department and held that post until 1984 when she was appointed to her present position. Her efforts on Triangle Research Libraries Network committees have been a vital part of the automation of the acquisitions and serials function.

Mary Zimmerman, of the Catalog Department at the University of Cincinnati, Ohio, retired at the end of August.

Deaths

Laura Michel Bowman,chemistry librarian at the University of Houston Libraries, died October 3, 1988. A member of ALA and the Special Libraries Association, Bowman received her MLS from the University of Denver, then worked as technical librarian at the Exploration and Production Technology Library of Marathon Oil Company in Littleton, Colorado. Among her accomplishments at UH was her leadership of an innovative project to create and test an Electronic Information Service Pilot Project, with funding from the Dreyfus Foundation, to support research in chemistry.

Frank Chalton Francis former director and principal librarian of the Britiśh Museum, died September 15 at the age of 86. Born in Liverpool, Francis attended Liverpool and Cambridge Universities and began his career as a schoolmaster. In 1926 he joined the BM staff where he later became secretary (1946-47), keeper in the Department of Printed Books, and director (1959-68). He was made CB in 1958 and KCB in 1960. Francis’ main interest was in historical bibliography, in which he was active in writing and editing. He lectured for many years at the School of Librarianship at University College London. His many professional memberships included the London Group of the University and Research Section of the Library Association, the Circle of State Librarians, and UNESCO, where he helped set up the International Advisory Committee on Bibliography. He was president of all the main associations including the Library Association, the Bibliographical Society, ASLIB, the Museums Association, and IFLA. As an editor, Francis worked on the publication The Library for 18 years, and The Journal of Documentation for 22 years. As a member of the BM staff he played a leading role in two very important programs: the founding of the British National Bibliography, and the publication of GK III, the third edition of the General Catalogue of Printed Books.

Loretta Hill, a member of the Monographic Processing Services Department at Indiana University, Bloomington, died November 24 after a long illness. Hill began her career at IU in 1960 as a clerk typist in the Order Department, then moved on to the Automated Processing Department, where she worked as a cataloger until 1986.

Mary Elizabeth Miller Shaw, former librarian at Goucher College, Towson, Maryland, died November 26. A graduate of the University of Arizona, Shaw worked in the public library in Highland Park, Michigan, before attending the University of Michigan library school, from which she graduated in 1938. Shaw held positions as cataloger at both Swarthmore College and Harvard University, and did personnel work at Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore, before joining the staff at Goucher, where she planned the library for the new Towson campus. She retired from active library work after her marriage in 1952.
