Pam Spiegel

Ernie B. Ingles,associate vice-president of learning systems at the University of Alberta (UA), has been named information innovator of the Year by the Canadian Information Productivity Awards (CIPA), an annual awards program established in 1992 to honor outstanding management achievement in information technology. Ingles was chosen for directing technological innovations that are creating a new model for the dissemination of information by libraries and research and educational institutions. He oversaw the creation of a system for interlibrary loan at UA that automates the ordering and delivery of documents using the World Wide Web. Ingles was also recently inducted into the CIPA Hall of Fame.

Anne R. Kenney,associate director of the Department of Preservation and Conservation at Cornell University, was appointed to the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC). She was appointed by the Society of American Archivists, for which she served as president. Kenney has participated in the NHPRC Historical Editing Institute and has reviewed NHPRC grant applications.

Susan Phillips

Susan Phillips,library director at the Ohio University Lancaster Regional Campus Library, has been presented with the Academic Library Association of Ohio’s (ALAO) Distinguished Service Award, which is presented to a long-time ALAO member who has promoted academic libraries and librarianship statewide and/or provided leadership in promotion of ALAO. Phillips played a leading role in getting academic libraries involved in library advocacy. She has served as president of ALAO, and on the executive board in the capacities of public relations chair, ACRL representative, and on the ALAO Government Relations Team. She has also served as chair of the ACRL Chapters Council.

Martin Runkle,director of the University of Chicago Library, has been elected chair of the Research Libraries Group (RLG) Board of Directors. James Michalko, RLG president, said of Runkle, “[he] has developed a real understanding of the potential and complexity of the RLG agenda. … I look forward to working with

[him] and expect to accomplish RLG’s strategic goals during his tenure.” Other new members of the board are: Reg Carr, Bodley’s librarian at the University of Oxford; Nancy M. Cline, Roy E. Larsen librarian of Harvard College; Lila J. Goff, assistant director for library and archives at the Minnesota Historical Society; Paul LeClerc, president and CEO of the New York Public Library; and Elaine F. Sloan, vice-presi-dent for information services and university librarian at Columbia University.

Appointments

Jerry Dean Campbell

Jerry Dean Campbell,university librarian and dean of University Libraries at the University of

Southern California (USC) since 1996, has been named to the newly created post of chief information officer at USC. In his new position, Campbell will work to create a consolidated managerial environment for Administrative Information Systems, University Computing Services, University Telecommunications, University Libraries, and other information providers and facilitators on campus. Before joining USC, Campbell served from 1985 to 1996 as vice-provost for library affairs, university librarian, and professor of the practice of theological bibliography at Duke University.

Concurrently, from 1989 to 1994, he served as Duke’s vice-provost for computing.

Ruth H. Miller

Ruth H. Millerhas been appointed director of the David L. Rice Library and Media Services at the University of Southern Indiana. Miller has spent the last five years as a librarian at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Before that she served as head of the Collection Development Department at Indiana State University, in various library positions at the University of Evansville, and as coordinator of collection development and access at the Hong Kong Library. She is coeditor of Collection Management for the 21st Century (Greenwood, 1996).

Colleen Bellis now library instruction coordinator at the University of Oregon, Eugene.

Jeffrey S. Bullingtonhas been appointed social sciences librarian at Trinity University in San Antonio.

Doralyn Edwardshas been named curriculum specialist and data librarian at Rice University, Houston.

Marie Erdmanhas joined the library at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville as automation librarian.

James L. Foorjoined Shepherd College in West Virginia as reference librarian and coordinator of bibliographic instruction.

Subash Gandihas been named public service/user education librarian (sciences) at Queens College, New York.

Patrick Hallis now instructional services coordinator at the University Libraries of Notre Dame.

Jeff Hollandhas joined Portland State University as serials cataloger.

Graham Howardis now public service/ user education librarian (social sciences) at Queens College, New York.

Lydia levinshas been named systems librarian in the Office for Information Systems at Harvard University.

Matthew Mattinglyhas been appointed five college multimedia instructional technology specialist at Amherst College in Massachusetts.

Marilyn Naitohas been appointed program coordinator for Florida State University’s distance education, ITV delivered, library and information studies master’s degree program.

David Orensteinhas been named coordinator of access services at Queens College, New York.

Pamela Pavliscakis now humanities and information technology librarian at Rice University, Houston.

Susan Riehlhas joined the library at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville as cataloging coordinator.

Elizabeth Scotthas been appointed serials catalog librarian at the University of Oregon, Eugene.

Anthony Semanikis now director of media services at Wayne State University.

Lydia Shahidhas been named head of the Monograph Section in the Catalog Department at the University of California, Irvine.

Laura Sillis now head of the Serials Department at the University Libraries of Notre Dame.

Deaths

Suzanne L. Katz,interlibrary loan librarian at Queens College from 1987 to 1992, died in a plane crash on November 1 at the age of 38. She was living in Hawaii and serving as corporate librarian at Rockwell International in Maui.

Paul Evan Peters,founding director of the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI), died on November 18 while walking with his wife on a beach in Florida. He was 48. Peters founded CNI and served as its head since March 1990. Before that he served as systems coordinator at the New York Public Library from 1987 to 1989; assistant university librarian for systems at Columbia University; and as a principal in a variety of research and development projects at the University of Pittsburgh. A former member of the ALA Council, Peters was also former president of ALA’s Library and Information Technology Association, and former chair of the National Information Standards Organization (NISO). CNI Steering Committee chair Richard West said, “We do not yet comprehend how much Paul will be missed. His leadership, insight, and quiet competence have had an impact on all who have benefited from the CNI program.” ■
