BRIAN AVENEY has announced the opening of The Information Works, El Granada, California, to offer consulting services to libraries and the information industry. He was most recently direc- tor for research and de- velopment at Blackwell North America where he worked on establish- ing electronic linkages between Blackwell and the WLN, UTLAS, OCLC, and other auto- mated acquisitions systems.

Brian Aveney

Aveney has worked in library and automation systems since 1967 at the Library of Congress, Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania, and Berkeley. He has also taught library science and automation at Harvard, Rutgers, Berkeley, San Jose State, and the University of Oregon.

He has also been appointed editor of Information Publishing, a new electronic journal to be published by Information Access Company and available on DIALOG this month. He edited Information Technology and Libraries for ALA’s Library Information and Technology Association from 1981 to 1983, is a consulting editor of EPB: Electronic Publishing and Bookselling, and is a member of the editorial board of Library Hi Tech.

Aveney currently serves on the ALA Task Force on Bibliographic Databases which is examining the question of copyright of library cataloging records.

SHERRILYNNE FULLER has been appointed direc- tor of the Bio-Medical Library of the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. For the past six years Fuller has been serving as associate director of the Norris Medical Li- brary at the University of Southern California. I Prior to that she was head of public services and head of reference at Norris. In 1972-1974 Fuller was an informa- tion analyst at the Brain Information Service of the University of Cali- f fornia, Los Angeles. Since 1981 she has also been lecturer in the USC School of Library and Information Management. Her other positions have included public and technical services responsibilities at the Penrose Public Library, Colorado Springs, and the Loussac Public Library, Anchorage.

Sherrilynne Fuller

Fuller received a bachelor’s degree in biology and an MLS at Indiana University, Bloomington. In the Spring of 1984 she was awarded a doctorate in library and information management at the University of Southern California.

Her professional activities have included membership on the Board of Directors of the Bio- Medical Communications Network, the On-Line Reference Services Advisory Committee of the California Library Authority for Systems and Services (CLASS), the National Program Committee of the Medical Library Association (1982), the Forum Coordinating Committee of the California Library Association (1981), and the Medicine Special Interest Group of the American Society for Information Science.

SIDNEY F. HUTTNER has been appointed head of special collections at the University of Tulsa’s Mc- Farlin Library, effective November 1. Prior to this appointment he and his wife operated their Stege Press and Bindery in Charlottesville, Virginia. From 1980 to 1982 he was head of the George Arents Research Library for Special Collections at Syracuse University and from 1970 to 1980 assistant head of special collections at the University of Chicago.

Huttner has written about city directories and is currently editing a register of artists, engravers, booksellers, bookbinders, printers and publishers in New York City for the years 1821-1842. Compiled from city directories the work includes the names of about 5,000 artists and craftsmen and some 50,000 addresses associated with them.

A hand bookbinder with a strong interest in the conservation of books and paper, Huttner is a member of the American Institute of Conservation, the Institute of Paper Conservation, and the Designer Bookbinders. He holds a master’s degree in philosophy from the University of Chicago. As a member of the ACRL Rare Books and Manuscripts Section, he helped draft a version of guidelines for the transfer of rare materials from general collections to special collections.

WENDY P. LOUGEE has been appointed head of the University of Michigan’s Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library, Ann Arbor, effective November 15. She will coordinate the operation of the public service units in the Graduate Library.

Wendy P. Lougee

She had been serving as assistant to the direc- tor since 1982. Her re- sponsibilities included research on current li- brary communications, planning, systems poli- cies, budget develop- ment and review, collec- tion management data analysis, and fundrais- ing. In addition Lougee assisted in the development of grant and special project proposals and served as RLG coordinator.

Lougee received her bachelor’s degree in English at Lawrence University, Appleton, Wisconsin, and earned an MLS at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1973. She also holds a master’s degree in psychology from the University of Minnesota (1977).

Before coming to Michigan, Lougee was reference/collection development librarian at Brown University from 1978 to 1982. She was also liaison to the departments of economics, education, linguistics, political science, psychology, and sociology. She has served as reference librarian at Wheaton College (1977-1978), and as a special project associate for the Florence Goodenough Reference Library at the University of Minnesota.

A former member of the College & Research Libraries Editorial Board, Lougee now holds appointments on the ACRL Copyright Committee and the RASD Nonbibliographic Databases and Data Files Committee.

People in the news

STEPHEN MARINE, serials cataloging librarian at the College of William and Mary, and LINDA WILSON, project manager for user education at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, are the recipients of the 1984 Professional Development Grant presented by the College and University Section of the Virginia Library Association. The grant, sponsored by Yankee Book Peddler, is intended to encourage and help support active participation in professional activities by academic librarians who have no more than three years of experience.

Retirements

JANE STURGEON, coordinator of rare book and special materials cataloging at Duke University, retired in December after 39 years of service.

ARNULFO D. TREJO, professor of library science at the University of Arizona, retired on December 31. He had been at Arizona since 1966.

MARY WARFORD, assistant documents/reference librarian at Syracuse University, retired recently after 10 years of service.

DOROTHEA WARREN, reference librarian at Washburn University Law Library, Topeka, Kansas, retired in December after 17 years of service. She had served as director of the Law Library from 1967 to 1979.

Deaths

BORIS DUBENSKY, head cataloger of the Hoover Institution Library, Stanford, California, from 1963 to 1970, died on October 22. For the past four years he had worked at Hoover as part-time cataloger of pamphlets.

MARTHA LOUISE ELLISON, librarian of Warren Wilson College, Swannanoa, North Carolina, from 1963 to 1973, passed away on October 24. In the spring of 1983 the Board of Trustees had honored her by dedicating the new college library in her name.

NORMAN HANDELSMAN, associate librarian in technical services at the University of California, Los Angeles, died on October 19 after 21 years of service.

PHILIP HOFER, founder and first curator of the Department of Printing and Graphic Arts in the Harvard College Library, died at his home in Cambridge on November 9. One of Harvard’s great benefactors, Hofer donated more than 10,000 manuscripts, prints, drawings, illustrated books, and reference books to the library.

Hofer received a bachelor’s degree (1921) and a master’s degree in fine arts (1929) from Harvard. The following year he became curator of the Spencer Collection of the New York Public Library and from 1934 to 1937 he served as the first appointed assistant director of the Morgan Library. In 1938 he returned to Harvard and from that time onward developed the library’s collections of illustrated and calligraphic manuscripts and fine printing and illustration.

MARJORIE HOOD, head circulation librarian at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro from 1936 to 1970, died on June 17. She was a collaborator with Guy Lyle on the third edition of the textbook The Administration of the College Library (1961).

MARK JUPITER, who served as cataloger at Columbia University from 1946 to 1972, died on November 7.

EDYTHE KIRK, assistant head of the Cataloging Department at the University of Illinois, Champaign, from 1958 to 1973, died on November 27.
