Profiles

John K. Amrhein

JohnK. Amrhein has been appointed director of the library at California State College, Stanislaus, effective August 1. Currently he is university librarian at Kutztown University, Pennsylvania.

Before coming to Kutztown in 1971, he was circulation librarian at Kent State University, Ohio. His other experience includes three years at the Pennsylvania State University Libraries as periodicals librarian and as assistant librarian for Commonwealth campuses and continuing education. During his 13 years at Kutztown University, the library collection tripled in size, interlibrary loan increased by 1400 %, and a comprehensive bibliographic instruction program was developed.

Amrhein holds a bachelor’s degree from Duquesne University, an MLS from the University of Pittsburgh, and a master’s in philosophy from Pennsylvania State University. He contributed the philosophy chapter to the second and third editions of Bill Katz’s Magazines for Libraries (1972 & 1978).

Ellen Hoffman

Ellen Hoffmanhas been named director of libraries at York University, Downsview, Ontario, effective May 1. She was assistant director for public services at York and had served as acting director since 1,983.

Her previous experience includes positions as reference librarian (1975-1978), head of the Reference Department (1973-1975), and Atkinson and undergraduate librarian (1971-1973) at York. From 1966 to 1971 she worked at Yale University Library. She holds bachelor’s (1965) and MLS (1966) degrees from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Hoffman is currently a member of the ACRL Membership Committee and the LAMA Statistics for College and University Libraries Committee, and has been a member of the ALA Reference and Subscription Books Review Committee. In 1982-1983 she was a participant in the ARL/OMS Consultant Training Program. Hoffman has served as chair of the Ontario Geac User Group and is a member of the Canadian Library Association.

StantonF. Biddle, associate director for planning and development at the State University of New York at Buffalo, has been named chief librarian at Baruch College of the City University of New York, effective April 30. Biddle was awarded the first ACRL/ISI Dissertation Fellowship in 1983 for his dissertation proposal on planning in university libraries. He is currently working on the completion of his doctorate through the School of Library and Information Studies at the University of California, Berkeley.

Biddle also holds a master’s degree in public administration from New York University, an MLS from Atlanta University, and a bachelor’s degree from Howard University. He interned at the University of California, Berkeley, under the Council on Library Resources Academic Library Management Program.

As associate director at SUNY-Buffalo, Biddle chaired the automated circulation system selection committee, the Task Force on the Research Libraries Group, and the Faculty and Professional Staff Development Committee.

RonaldE. Wyllys has been named dean of the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Texas at Austin. He has been serving as acting dean since September 1982, when Dean Claud Glenn Sparks resigned to return to full-time teaching. A specialist in research methods emphasizing statistics, systems analysis, library automation and operations research, Wyllys joined the UT faculty in 1972.

He received a Ph.D. degree in information science from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1974 and a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Arizona State University in 1950. His other professional experience includes positions as lecturer in the computer sciences department at the University of Wisconsin (1966-1972) and chief systems analyst for the University of Wisconsin Libraries (1966-1969); computer systems specialist for System Development Corporation (1961-1966); and associate in information retrieval for Planning Research Corporation (1959-1961).

Articles by Wyllys have appeared in such publications as Collection Management, Communications of the Association for Computing Machinery, and Library Trends. He is co-author of a book on national document-handling systems.

People in the News

Michael Gorman,director of the Division of General Services at the University of Illinois Library, Urbana, has joined the faculty of the University of Chicago Graduate Library School as a visiting professor for the Spring and Summer 1984 terms. Pie is teaching a course in bibliographic utilities and networks, an advanced seminar on academic and research libraries, and an eight-session continuing education course in the summer.

Norman Horrocks,director of the Dalhousie University School of Library Service, Nova Scotia, has been elected vice-president/president-elect of the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE).

Norman Nelson, assistant university librarian at Oklahoma State University, will assume the office of president of the Oklahoma Library Association on July 1.

BarbaraJ. Pinzelik, associate humanities and general services librarian at Purdue University, was presented the 1984 John H. Moriarty Award for Excellence in Library Service by the President of the University on April 26.

Dennis Reynolds,head of OCLC services at the Bibliographic Center for Research, Denver, will teach a course in library automation at the University of Chicago Graduate Library School this summer. He will also teach a ten-session continuing education course of a more general nature on the same topic.

Retirements

Tung-Chu Chen,Nesbitt and Evening College librarian at Drexel University, Philadelphia, retired on March 30.

Jean Hudson,general reference librarian at the University of California, Berkeley, retired in March after 27 years of service.

Scott Kennedy,head of the Physical Sciences Library at the University of California, Davis, since 1975, retired on January 6.

Claire Meyer,reference librarian at the University of Oregon, Eugene, will retire on June 30. She has been at Oregon since 1961, having served as head of circulation, head of interlibrary loan, and catalog information service librarian.

Dave Schacht,science and technology librarian at Oregon State University, Corvallis, retired on January 1.

Enid Waterman,collections research librarian at the University of Waterloo, Ontario, retired at the end of April after 21 years of service.

Deaths

Kathleen Eads,librarian in the Humanities Library at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, died on February 9. She had been at Carbondale 23 years.

DonaldA. Osborne, head of acquisitions at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, died on February 25.

CharlesW. David, former director of libraries and professor of history at the University of Pennsylvania, died on April 2 at the age of 99. The author of several scholarly works in medieval history, David also played a major role during the 1940s and 1950s in the development of the Union Library Catalog of Pennsylvania and the revitalization and expansion of the University of Pennsvlvania Libraries.

CharlesW. David

David earned a bachelor’s degree from Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar in 1911 and a doctorate from Harvard in 1918. He taught history at the University of Washington for three years and at Bryn Mawr College from 1918 to 1940. In the 1930s he joined historian Conyers Read to become one of the principal architects of the Union Library Catalog of Pennsylvania.

In 1940 David became professor of history and the first full-time director of libraries at the University of Pennsylvania. For the next 15 years until he retired in 1955, lie worked to achieve a remarkable renaissance of the University’s neglected libraries. He also served a five-year term as executive secretary of the Association of Research Libraries, and played a major role in the Farmington Plan and rebuilding the war-ravaged libraries of Europe.

After his retirement from Penn at the age of 70, David went on to plan and establish the Eleutherian Mills Historical Library, a major research collection for American business and industrial history, at Longwood, Delaware. Then he established the Maritime Library at the Mystic Seaport Museum in Connecticut. During these “retirement” years he also served as chairman of the Board of Trustees at West Chester State Teachers College and guided it through a difficult transition.— Richard De Gennaro, University of Pennsylvania.

JohnM. Sekerak, former agricultural sciences librarian at the University of California, Davis, died on April 2 in Sacramento. He previously held positions at Modesto Junior College and American River College, and also undertook foreign assignments for the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization in Sudan and Bangledesh. His subject bibliography, Grapes, Viticulture, Wine and Wine Making, was sponsored in 1975 by the American Society of Enologists.

CarolineM. Shillaber, former librarian of the Graduate School of Design, Harvard University, died on March 22. She had been associated with Harvard since 1931, when she became assistant librarian of what was then the library of the Departments of Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning. In 1951 she moved to MIT, where she served until 1963 as librarian of the Rotch Library of Architecture and Urban Planning. In that year she returned to Harvard as librarian of the Graduate School of Design.

JolanG. SzENDREY, of the Department of Special Collections and Archives, Rutgers University, died on April 12. She had been with the Rutgers libraries for 33 years and was well known for her work as agricultural librarian at the College of Agriculture and Environmental Science. She also worked as associate librarian at the Library of Science and Medicine.
