Bill Coons, current awareness services librarian at Cornell University’s Albert R. Mann Library, presented a paper at “Software Solutions,” the 2nd Annual Computer Symposium and Software Fair, sponsored by the Forest Resources Systems Institute and the Forest Products Research Society and held in Louisville, Kentucky, April 22-24, 1985. The paper, titled “Online Searching of Bibliographic Databases: Microcomputer Access to National Information Systems,” described the range and capabilities of the various information databases available to technicians, researchers and managers employed in forestry and the forest products industry.

Lenore Coral, librarian of the Cornell University Music Library, has been elected vice president/president-elect of the Music Library Association. Coral will begin her term as president in February 1987.

Holly Ann Gardinier, music librarian at the Butler Center Library at Mansfield University, Pennsylvania, has been awarded the first annual Walter Gerboth Award by the Music Library Asso- cation. The award will provide financial assistance for her bibliographic and historical research into a 350-volume collection of 18th to 20th century French music and theater almanacs held in the Sibley Music Library at the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester, New York. The award was established in memory of a professor of music and former head of the Brooklyn College Music Library who was active in ML A.

JohnR. Paynehas concluded a 16-year career with the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center at the University of Texas at Austin to concentrate on his library appraisal and consulting service. Payne has served in positions ranging from associate librarian to acting director at the Ransom Center and was previously a Lilly Fellow in Rare Books at the Lilly Library at Indiana University .

CharlesR. Schultz,university archivist at Texas A&M University, has won the 1985 Prize Article Contest of the Log of Mystic Seaport, the quarterly journal of the Mystic Seaport Museum, Inc., in Mystic, Connecticut. The $500 prize, in its fifth year, was awarded to Schultz’s manuscript, titled “A Forty-Niner Fourth of July.” The article will be published in an upcoming issue of the journal.

Robert Berring

Profiles

RobertC. Berringhas been named dean of the School of Library and Information Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. Berring has served as professor of law and law librarian at UC Berkeley’s Boalt Hall Law School since 1982.

Prior to his service at UC Berkeley, Berring held positions at the law libraries of the Univer- sity of Washington,

Harvard University, the University of Texas, and the University of Illi- nois. He h as taught courses in legal bibliog- raphy at the library schools of the University of Illinois, the University of Texas, Simmons College, the University of Washington, and the University of California, Berkeley.

Berring received both a law degree and an MLS from Berkeley. He is the editor of Legal Reference Services Quarterly and is president of the American Association of Law Librarians (1985-86).

GeorgeR. Parkshas been appointed librarian of the University of Southern Maine. Parks was librarian at Colgate University for five years prior to accepting the post at USM.

George Parks

Prior to his position at Colgate, Parks was dean of libraries at the Uni- versity of Rhode Island, 1969-80. He has also served as chief adminis- trator and acting direc- tor of libraries (1968- 69), and assistant librar- ian for administration (1966-68) at the Univer- sity of Rochester.

Parks received a bachelor’s degree from the University of New Hampshire and an MLS from the University of Michigan. He is a past president of the New England Chapter of ACRL (1975).

Susan Zappen has been appointed acquisitions librarian at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York.

Retirement

Edward Kemp, collection development librarian at the University of Oregon, Eugene, retired December 31 after 30 years of service. Kemp began his career at Oregon in 1955. His service there has included positions as acquisitions librarian, head of the Gifts and Exchange Section, and head of the Acquisitions Department. Kemp received his MLS at the University of California, Berkeley.

Deaths

Daniel Raposo Cordeiro, Latin American librarian at Syracuse University, New York, died February 27 in Syracuse after a long illness. Cordeiro had been Latin American librarian at Syracuse since 1973. Prior to his service at Syracuse, Cordeiro was bibliographer for Latin America, Spain and Portugal at the University of Kansas. He held a bachelor’s degree in education from Bridgewater State College, a master’s in Latin American History from New York University, and an MLS from Columbia University. He was an active member of the Seminar on the Acquisition of Latin American Library Materials (SALALM), and edited A Bibliography of Latin American Bibliographies: Social Sciences and Humanities.

FredB. Oxtoby, former descriptive cataloger at the Library of Congress, died January 1 in Washington. Oxtoby retired from his position at the Library of Congress in 1981 after 14 years of service. Prior to his service at LC, he was chief of the Catalog Department at the John Crerar Library, Chicago. Oxtoby’s previous professional posts included work as head cataloger at the Illinois Institute of Technology and as a cataloger at the University of Illinois. He earned a bachelor’s and master’s in library science from the University of Illinois.

MaryL. Woodworth,assistant director of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Library and Information Studies, died suddenly March 2 in Madison. Woodworth had been a faculty member at UW since 1964 and had received a bachelor’s and a master’s degree there. ■ ■
