Beckman named Academic Librarian of the Year

Margaret Beckman

Margaret Beckman, executive director for infor- mation technology at the University of Guelph, Ontario, has been named the Academic or Research Librarian of the

Year for 1986 by the As- sociation of College and Research Libraries. The Association and the Baker & Taylor Com- pany will present the award to Beckman on June 30 at the ACRL membership meeting at New York University during the ALA Annual Conference in New York.

The award cites Beck- man for her influence in a very broad range of academic ìibrarianship and recognizes her authority in the areas of library management, automation and building design.

“Beckman’s contributions to the field of library automation are widely known,” the citation reads. “CODOC, an automated system for organizing government documents, now adopted by many libraries, was her design and originated at the University of Guelph. The GEAC library system was developed there under her leadership and has since become a prototype for many institutions.”

Beckman was also honored for her development of a consultative management model that she developed at the University of Guelph, as well as her involvement with library building planning. She has taught regularly on this subject since 1970 and has delivered seminars and consulted around the world in such countries as China, Iceland, and Saudi Arabia. Canada has recognized her distinction in this field by appointing her official representative to the last three UNESCO Library Buildings conferences.

The ACRL Academic or Research Librarian of the Year Award was established by ACRL and the Baker & Taylor Company to recognize members of the library profession who have made outstanding national or international contributions to academic or research Ìibrarianship and library development. The Committee that selected Beckman for the award consisted of the following persons: Charles B. Osburn (chair), University Librarian, University of Cincinnati; Dale B. Canelas, Director, University of Florida Libraries; James F. McCoy, Director of Learning Resources, Hudson Valley Community College; Jean Pelletiere, College of Public Affairs and Policy, SUNY-Albany; Shelley E. Phipps, Science-Engineering Library, University of Arizona; and Ann E. Prentice, Director, University of Tennessee Library. ■ ■

Virginia Tiefel named BI Librarian of the Year

Virginia Tiefel

Virginia Tiefel, director of library user educa- tion, Ohio State University Libraries, has been named the Miriam Dudley Bibliographic instruction Librarian of the

Year for 1986. The award will be presented at the program meeting of the ACRL Biblio- graphic Instruction Sec- tion on Sunday, June 29, at 2:00 p.m. during ALA's Annual Confer- ence in New York.

The award recognizes Tiefel’s efforts to ad- vance bibliographic in- struction at local, state- wide, and national levels.

Tiefel was the catalyst in the development of a comprehensive library user education program at Ohio State University. Evan Farber, a noted leader in bibliographic instruction, said of Tiefel, “…she has done a marvelous job at OSU and has established a reputation for doing so… There’s not much question that OSU is coming to be regarded as a stellar example of what can be done in a large university to instruct students in use of the library.”

Tiefel has been active professionally on both the state and national level and has published numerous works on library instruction. In 1984 Tiefel was named Outstanding Academic Librarian of 1984 by the Academic Library Association of Ohio.

The award, consisting of $900 and a plaque, was established in 1984 to honor Miriam Dudley, an early leader in the academic library instruction movement who retired recently from UCLA. It has been funded by Mountainside Publishing Company, Ann Arbor, on behalf of their publication Research Strategies, a journal of library concepts and instruction. Thomas Kirk received the first award and Carolyn Kirkendall was the next recipient in 1985.

Nominations for the 1987 award should be made by December 1, 1986. For further information contact Mary Reichel, Head, Reference Department, Pullen Library, Georgia State University, 100 Decatur Street, S.E., Atlanta, GA30303; (404) 658-2185.

Exhibition Catalogue Awards to be presented

The first annual Awards for Exhibition Catalogues have been announced by ACRL’s Rare Books and Manuscripts Section.

Winners in the three divisions—expensive, moderate, and inexpensive—were as follows: “Renaissance Painting in Manuscripts: Treasures from the British Library,” submitted by the J. Paul Getty Museum (first division); “The Survivors: An Exhibition of Rare Russian Books,” entered by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (second division); “The Mikado: A Centenary Celebration,” from the Pierpont Morgan Library, and “He Has Long Outlived His Century: The 200th Anniversary of Johnson’s Death,” submitted by the Houghton Library, Harvard University, tying for the award in the third division.

Additional catalogues were singled out for honorable mention. In the first division, these were “Bookbinding in America, 1680-1910,” submitted by Bryn Mawr College Library, and “Nature Disclosed: Books from the Collections of the John Crerar Library Illustrating the History of Science,” entered by the University of Chicago Library.

Catalogues awarded honorable mention in the second division were “The Dark Side of the Enlightenment,” from the Houghton Library, Harvard University, and “Theories of the Earth, 1644-1830: The History of a Genre,” sponsored by the Linda Hall Library, Kansas City, Missouri. “James Joyce at 101,” from the McFarlin Library, the University of Tulsa, received honorable mention in the third division.

The awards will be presented by Beverly Lynch at the RBMS program meeting at ALA Annual Conference in New York (see schedule this issue for time), and the winning catalogues will be on display both at the RBMS Preconference and the program meeting.

Divisions were based upon unit costs for producing the exhibition catalogues. Catalogues published between January 1, 1983, and August 31, 1985, were eligible for this year’s competition. Criteria for granting the awards include excellence in the areas of accuracy and consistency of presentation, clarity, quality of design and usefulness of catalogues to the intended audience. The committee served as jury with some consultation with outside experts. Seventy eligible entries were received.

Entries for September 1, 1985, through August 31, 1986, must be submitted by September 30, 1986.
