21-August 1—Federal information:Institute on Federal Library Resources, a summer workshop sponsored by the Catholic University of America, will be held at CUA’s Marist Hall, Washington, D.C. 17 –22—Photo archives:“Preservation of Black- and-White Photographs,” a series of lectures and workshops, will be held at the Rochester Institute of Technology’s Technical and Education Center of the Graphic Arts, Rochester, New York. Seminar coordinator is George T. Eaton, retired program chairman of Eastman Kodak Research Laboratories. Post-seminar workshops on August 21-22 will feature four hours of darkroom experience. 11–12—End users: “Information and the End User: Training Library Patrons in Database Searching,” a joint conference sponsored by ACRL’s Texas and Louisiana Chapters, will be held at the Monteleone Hotel, New Orleans. Keynote speaker will be Richard V. Janke from the University of Ottawa Libraries; other speakers include Ralph Alberico, Barbara Quint, Karen Bertel, and Vicki Anders. Fee: $40. 20—Antiquarian Book Fair:Sponsored by the Old Sturbridge Village Research Library Society, Sturbridge, Massachusetts. Admission is $2.50. Thirty-five antiquarian book dealers from the northeastern United States will be represented. Old Sturbridge Village is located on Route 20 West in Sturbridge, Massachusetts. The Committee for a New England Bibliography will also be sponsoring an auction of books and materials relating to New England history the day before the book fair.

16–18—Modem history: Leopold von Ranke Centennial Conference, Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York. Von Ranke, whose personal library is housed in the University’s George Arents Research Library, was a German historian who had a profound effect on the writing of history and the way in which the discipline of history is organized. Co-sponsored by the American Historical Association and Syracuse University.

18— Automation: “Designing Specifications for an Automated Library System and Preparing a Request for Proposals,” a workshop sponsored by the University of Iowa School of Library and Information Science, will be held at the Ironmen Inn, Coralville, Iowa. 19- –22—Federal information:“Government Information: An Endangered Resource of the Electronic Age,” an interactive State-of-the-Art Institute that combines lectures by expert practitioners, group discussions, and study sessions, will be held at the Sheraton Grand Hotel, Washington, D.C. The institute is sponsored by the Special Library Association. Keynote speaker will be Steve Bell, the anchor for ABC’s World News This Morning. Fees: $350 for SLA members; $400 for non-members.
