• Academic Libraries: The Changing Knowledge Centers of Colleges and Universities, by Barbara B, Moran (97 pages, 1984), has been published as no.8 of the ASHE-ERIC Higher Education Research Report series. The report describes the current state of American academic libraries, and predicts some of the challenges from both internal and external factors that will shape the academic library of the future. Four areas are singled out as crucial: 1) the need for planning in the information age; 2) the role of faculty and librarians in planning; 3) the need for financial commitment to the library by the institution; and 4) the importance of supporting more cooperative library ventures. • Afro-American Studies, by Nathan I. Huggins (96 pages, July 1985), is a survey, commissioned by the Ford Foundation, of the current status of Afro- American studies programs on American campuses in the light of the early experience and future needs of the field. • Areas of Cooperation in Librari/ Development in Asian and Pacific Regions, edited by Sally C. Tseng, Hwa-Wei Lee, and K. Mulliner (63 pages, 1985), consists of papers presented at the 1983 Joint Annual Program of the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association and Chinese-American Librarians Association. Topics include the role of UNESCO in library cooperation, library internships, and the need for qualified personnel. • Basic Electronics Technology, by Alvis J. Evans, Jerry D. Mullen, and Danny H. Smith, is an overview of the basic concepts and practical applications of electronic circuits and systems. It explains how semiconductors and circuits work as amplifiers, as oscillators, in power supplies, in audio systems, in AM/FM radio, in TV and other video systems, in microprocessors, and computers. • Bihliograplm on Soviet Intelligence and Security Services by Raymond G. Rocca and John J. Dziak (203 pages, 1985), is a qualitatively annotated list of books, articles, chapters, and documents on the KGB and other Soviet intelligence agencies. Of particular interest are chapters on Russian sources and writings by defectors and other eyewitnesses. An appendix supplies a historical flowchart of the relevant agencies. • BIake and Sivedenborg: Opposition Is True Friendship, edited by Harvey F. Beilin and Darrell Ruhl (157 pages, August 1985), is an anthology of essays that examine the inspiration for some of Wil- liam Blake’s poetry and art in the writings of Swedish theologian Emanuel Swedenborg. Well illustrated with Blake’s illuminated poems, the book explores a little-known aspect of the great mystic. • The Catalog of the Dan M. King Architecture Collection at the Library Learning Center, Kentucky Wesleyan College: A Guide, compiled by Richard Weiss (40 pages, 1985), describes the collection donated by the former Kentucky Wesleyan Library director. The guide lists short titles for nearly 400 monographs, which are arranged by subject. • The Information Economy in the U.S.: Its Ef fect on Libraries and Library Networks (59 pages, 1985), the proceedings of the Library of Congress Network Advisory Committee Meeting, November 14-16, 1984, have been published as Network Planning Paper no. 10 by the Library of Congress. The aim of the meeting was to provide attendees with a working definition of the information economy and explain how libraries fit into and are affected by it. • Library and Information Services in a Learning Society (93 pages, 1985) is the 13th annual report of the National Commission on Library and Information Science, which advises the Executive and Legislative Branches on national library and information-related policies. In 1983-84 NCLIS issued a statement in response to A Nation at Risk and investigated fee-supported services in public and academic libraries. A summary of the Commission’s goals for establishing a national program for library and information services, and a list of its projects and publications are included in the appendices. • Organizing for Preservation in ARL Libraries, SPEC Kit #116 (131 pages, July 1985), details the results of an Office of Management Studies survey of 27 research libraries identified as having a preservation department or planning one. The kit includes initial planning statements, rationales for program placement, organization charts, and job descriptions.
