LARRY X. BESANThas been named director of li- braries at Morehead State University, Morehead, Kentucky, effective in August.

Larry X. Besant

Until recently the di- rector of the Linda Hall Library in Kansas City, Besant has also served as assistant director of li- braries at Ohio State University, assistant li- brarian with the Chemi- cal Abstracts Service, and acting director of the University of Hous- ton Libraries. He holds a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and an MLS from the University of Illinois.

Besant has written several articles for professional journals and has served as a consultant to Memphis State University Library and to the Lunar Science Institute of the Universities Space Research Association. He is active in ALA, the National Information Standards Organization, and the Special Libraries Association. He was also a member of the Research Libraries Advisory Committee’s Document Delivery Task Force for OCLC.

PAUL GHERMANhas been named director of li- braries at Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, effective June 17. For the past eight years he was assistant director for administra- tive affairs at Iowa State University. He was per- sonnel officer at Penn- sylvania State Univer- sity from 1974 to 1977 and head of circulation at Wayne State Univer- sity from 1971 to 1974.

Paul Gherman

Gherman has a bach- elor’s degree in English and history from Wayne State University and an MLS from the Univer- sity of Michigan.

He has published in the area of personnel and budget in the Journal of Academic Librarianship, Library Journal, Journal of Library Administration, and the Drexel Library Quarterly. He is active in ALA and currently serves as chair of the Library Administration and Management Association’s Risk Management and Insurance for Libraries Committee, as well as being a member of the LAMA Budget and Finance Committee.

TANJA LORKOVIC, head of the Catalog Depart- ment at the University of Iowa, is on leave of ab- sence for one year as academic library advisor to the University of North Sumatra, an appoint- ment sponsored by the Midwest University Consortium for Interna- tional Activities. As ad- visor she will review the existing library facilities available at the univer- sity and prepare and as- sist in the implementa- tion of plans to improve the existing library sys- tem that should support the growing university of 20,000 students. The University of North Sumatra project will cost $50 million, of which $26 million will be supported by the Asian Development Bank Loan, while the re- mainder will be financed by the Republic of Indo- nesia.

Tanja Lorkovic

MICHEL S. PERDREAU, archives librarian at Ohio University, Athens, was selected to join the Simultaneous Interpreters Team for translations from English into French for the 51st International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) Conference in Chicago, August 16-24, 1985. Perdreau was the only United States citizen serving on the team.

Deaths
