Ann-Christe Galloway

The following are participants in the Leadership Fellows Program, sponsored by the National Library of Medicine and the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries: Judy Consales, interim director, UCLA’s Louise M. Darling Biomedical Library; Charles J. Greenberg, head reference librarian, Cushing/Whitney Medical Library at Yale University; Patricia C. Betty Gard,head of reference and research services at the University of North Dakota’s (UND) Chester Fritz Library, was named 2002 Librarian of the Year by the North Dakota Library Association (NDLA). Gard has worked at UND since 1971. She served as NDLA president and has chaired many NDLA sections and committees over three decades. She has also been state representative to the ALA Council for two terms and remains active on many ALA committees and task forces.

Fred M. Heath,dean of the University Libraries at Texas A&M University, began his one-year term as president of the Association of Research Libraries.

Three new Association of Research Libraries’ board members were elected by the membership to serve three-year terms: Rush Miller, university librarian, University of Pittsburgh; Sherrie Schmidt, dean of university libraries, Arizona State University; and Paul Willis, dean of libraries, University of South Carolina.

Mary Jane Scherdin,director of the Oscar Rennebohm Library, Edgewood College in Madison, Wisconsin, has been named the 2002 Librarian of the Year-Demco Award recipient by the Wisconsin Library Association. Scherdin worked in public, school, and academic library settings, including positions at the University of Wisconsin (UW)-Whitewater, UW-Milwaukee, and UW-Madison, before being named library director at Edgewood College in 1992. She chaired the ACRL Task Force on Vocational Interest Inventories (1991-93), was a member of the ACRL Image Enhancement Committee (1993— 96), and chaired the ACRL Appointments Committee (1997-98).

She has also been active in the ACRL College Libraries Section’s College Library Director Mentor Program. Scherdin’s national study of the vocational characteristics of the library and information profession was funded by ALA, ACRL, and Consulting Psychologists Press, resulting in the book Discovering Libraians: Profiles of αProfession (ACRL, 1994).

Retirements

Richard Eimashas retired from his position as curator of the John Martin Rare Book Room and coordinator of access services in the Hardin Library for the Health Sciences at the University of Iowa Libraries, after 28 years of service.

Charlene Lehmanhas retired from her position as reference librarian in the research and information services department at the University of Iowa Libraries.

Sharon Stewarthas retired from the University of Alabama Libraries after 30 years of service.

Deaths

Robert Chapel

Robert Chapel, library technical assistant for the University Archives at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, died on November 3, 2002. Over the past 18 years, he had been the public face of the university archives and a stalwart in its provision of public service.

Joseph Periam Danton,94, professor emeritus and former dean of the school of librarianship at the University of California-Berkeley, has died. After serving with the New York Public Library, the Williams College Library, and ALA (1928-35), Danton served as librarian and associate professor of bibliography at Colby College and Temple University. He moved to Berkeley to become dean of the school of librarianship in 1946, where he served as dean until 1961 and retired in 1976. Danton’s numerous publications are cataloged in J. Periαm Danton: A Bibliography (School of Librarianship, University of California, Berkeley: 1976).

Helen H. Lyman, 92, librarian, teacher, scholar, and consultant in adult library services and literacy, died on November 4, 2002. She had most recently served as an adjunct professor in the library and information studies program at the University at Buffalo (1977-98). Lyman taught a course in adult resources and services yearly until the age of 88. She had previously served as a faculty member at the University of Wisconsin Library School from 1966 until her retirement as professor emeritus in 1977. Her library career began at the Buffalo Public Library (1932-52), where she served as head of the Adult Education Department. In 1954, ALA published her seminal study on adult education activities in U.S. libraries, the first research study on this topic. She went on to serve as adult services librarian for the Chicago Public Library, Public Library Consultant in Adult Services for the Wisconsin State Library, and Public Library Specialist in Adult Services for the U.S. Office of Education in Washington, D.C. Among her many honors and recognitions were: University at Buffalo Distinguished Alumni Award; the ALA Joseph W. Lippincott Award for Distinguished Librarianship; and ALA’s Margaret Monroe Library Adult Services Award.

Rose Marie Service, 81, education-psychology subject specialist for 25 years before her retirement in 1986 at the University of Oregon (UO) Libraries, died in Eugene, Oregon. She served as reference librarian for six years at Carleton College. Service was known as an innovator and a champion of the rights of students and citizens. She was one of the UO Libraries’ early adopters of new information products and was one of the first online searchers. ■
