ACRL and ALA Representatives at Academic Ceremonies and Meetings
The Association of College and Research Libraries and the American Library Association regularly receive invitations to send representatives to a variety of academic ceremonies and meetings. During the past year, members of ACRL have represented the association at the inaugurations of college and university presidents, at the dedication of a new university library building, and at the annual meetings of other associations.
On September 27, 1975, Ann M. Wilkinson, librarian, School of Library Service, Columbia University, served as ALA’s and ACRL’s representative at the inauguration of Margaret Wagonner as president of Wilson College, Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. Louise Giles, president of ACRL and dean of learning resources, Macomb County Community College, Warren, Michigan, represented the association at the October 4 inauguration of James H. Brickley as the sixteenth president of Eastern Michigan University. On October 12, Kilbourn L. Janacek, director of the library, North Dakota State University, attended the inauguration of Paul J. Dovre as president of Concordia College, Moorhead, Minnesota. The inauguration of Robert E. Leestamper as president of Southeast Missouri State University, on October 26, was attended by Andrew J. Eaton, director of libraries, Washington University. Richard Fitzsimmons, director of the library, Worthington Scranton Campus, Pennsylvania State University, served as the association’s representative at the inauguration of William J. Byron as president of the University of Scranton, on October 29.
On February 21, 1976, Melville R. Spence, director of libraries, Bowling Green State University, served as the representative of ALA and ACRL at the inauguration of William A. Kinnison as the eleventh president of Wittenburg University, Springfield, Ohio. The inauguration of Anthony J. Diekema as the seventh president of Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Michigan, on March 2, was attended by A. P. Marshall, dean of academic services, Eastern Michigan University. ALA’s representative at the April 2 inauguration of Mabie Parker McLean as the ninth president of Barber-Scotia College, Concord, North Carolina, was Allegra M. Westbrooks, assistant director, Branch Services, Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, Charlotte, North Carolina. On April 3, Corinne W. Gantt, head librarian, Circulation Department, Southern University in New Orleans, represented ALA and ACRL at the inauguration of Samuel DuBois Cook as president of Dillard University, New Orleans. Representing the association at the inauguration of Robert L. Bliss as the twenty-first president of Morris Harvey College, Charleston, West Virginia, on April 24, was Kenneth T. Slack, director of libraries, Marshall University, Huntington, West Virginia.
The dedication ceremonies of the new Alexander M. Bracken Library at Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana, on March 26, 1976, were attended by Beverly P. Lynch, executive secretary of ACRL.
The fifty-eighth annual meeting of the American Council on Education, held October 8-10, 1975, in Washington, D.C., was attended by Louise Giles, president of ACRL. The association’s representatives at the eightieth annual meeting of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, held April 9-10, 1976, in Philadelphia, were Joan I. Gotwals, associate director of libraries, University of Pennsylvania, and Linda Beaupre, Council on Library Resources management intern, University of Pennsylvania Libraries.
