1-3—African studies:The fall meeting of the Archives/Libraries Committee of the African Studies Association will be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia. 11—Technology and education:Illinois Computing Educators and the Illinois Association for Educational Communications & Technology will hold the fourth annual educators’ conference, “Ice Breaker ’89: Improving Instruction through Technology,” at Indian Trail Junior High School, 222 N. Kennedy Drive, Addison, Illinois. Tom Snyder, creator of software for teachers, and Gary Stager, teacher trainer and author, will be the featured speakers. Sessions will be offered on administration, Appleworks, computer curriculum, curricular sharing, desktop publishing, HyperCard, interactive video, keyboarding, special education, telecommunications, and much more. 17—New York:The N ew York Chapter of AC RL will hold its annual symposium, “Librarians and Power: An Uneasy Relationship,” from 8:30- 3:30 in the auditorium of the City University of New York, 33 W. 42nd Street. The keynote speaker will be Stanley Aronowitz, author and professor of sociology at CUNY. Additional speakers include Abigail Hubbard, University of Texas; Richard Halsey, SUNY/Albany; and Maureen Sullivan, Yale University. The cost, including lunch, is $40. 1-2—Bibliographic instruction:Eckerd College again will host the Earlham College-Eckerd College Bibliographic Instruction Conference. This year, in addition to discussions of traditional methods of bibliographic instruction, we will emphasize the role of CD-ROM technology in bibliographic instruction. Enrollment is limited to 75. 20-24—Music libraries:The Music Library Association will hold its 59th annual conference at the Holiday Inn Broadway, Tucson, Arizona. On the 20th and 21st a preconference workshop is being offered, “Space Utilization in the Music Library: Creation, Renovation, Reorganization.” Sessions beginning on the 21st include bibliographic instruction revisited, Southwest Native American music, preservation of sound recordings, antiquarian music collecting, and music therapy and medical aspects of the performing arts. 6-7—Staff development:The University of Wisconsin-Madison will hold a conference titled “Working in Libraries: A Staff Development Conference for Library Assistants, Support Staff and Paraprofessionals” at the Yahara Center in Madison. Featured sessions will be on image, assertiveness, and the “invisible” professional; creativity; and technology. Kathleen Weibel, chair of the ALA Education Support Staff Subcommittee, will be the keynote speaker. Twelve workshops will also be offered on topics like technical services, reference work, and children’s programming. Registration fee is $65 and includes some meals.
