Douglas G. Birdsallhas been named associate director of libraries for information access and systems at Texas Tech University Libraries. Birdsall has been at the North Dakota State University Libraries in Fargo since 1984, serving as head of public services and, most recently, as assistant director for collection management and reference services. Before that he was humanities librarian at the Idaho State University Library. Birdsall graduated from the University of Michigan with a B.A., then received an M.A. from Central Michigan University, and an MLS from the University of Michigan. He is a member of ALA and was chair of the Academic Section of the Mountain-Plains Library Association in 1988-1989.
In 1985 Birdsall received a grant for “Database Searching: A Proposal for Creating Awareness and Developing Skills” from the Facuity Development Institute at NDSU. In 1982 he received a grant for “Library Use Improvement: Subject-Oriented Library Guides for Upper-Division Students” from the Center for Instructional Improvement, Idaho State University. In both 1988 and 1989 he edited the Proceedings of the Mountain-Plains Library Association Academic Section Research Forum. Other publications include “Library Skills and Freshman English: A Librarian’s Perspective” in College Composition and Communication, and Dissertationsand Theses About Idaho, 1900-1978, published in 1980. Birdsall received ALA’s H.W. Wilson Periodical Award for the editorship of The Idaho Librarian in 1983.
Rhoda K. Channing,assistant university librarian of Boston College, has been appointed library director at Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, North Carolina. During her 25-year career, Channing has worked in the libraries of the University of North Carolinaat Chapel Hill, the University of Kentucky, and Boston College. She is afrequent speaker at professional meetings, has served on the ALA Committee on Accreditation, and was an officer of the N ew England Chapter of ACRL
Doris J. Hulberthas been named director of the Walter Clinton Jackson Library at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Hulbert is currently acting director of the library, and served as associate directorsince 1984. She joined the staff at Jackson Library in 1980 as head circulation librarian. Before that Hulbert was head of circulation at the University of Delaware and head reference librarian at Indiana University. She is agraduate of Montclair State College (B.A. and M.A.) and received her MLS from Indiana University. She is a member of ALA, ACRL, and the North Carolina Library Association, among other organizations. For the past five years she has served as a member of the University of North Carolina System Library Automation and NetworkingCommittee. She also serves at UNCG as a member of the Academic Cabinet, the Committee on University Budget, and the Centennial Planning Board. In her new position Hulbert will head a library with total holdings of 1,900,000 items and a staff of 72.
William C. Roselle,director of the Golda Meir Library at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee since 1971, has been appointed director of the University Library System at the University of Pittsburgh. Roselle graduated from Thiel College and received an MLS from the University of Pittsburgh. He has served professionally at the University of Iowa, the Pennsylvania State University, Carnegie-Mellon University, the State Library of Pennsylvania, the Milton Hershey School, and the United States Army’s Counterintelligence Corps. During his 18 years in Wisconsin, Roselle increased the Meir Library holdings from 900,000 to more than 3,500,000 cataloged items, directed the design and construction of nearly $20 million in library facilities, and was responsible for the 1978 transfer of the American Geographical Society Collection from New York City to Milwaukee.
Roselle is a life member of ALA, an honorary fellow of the American Geographical Society, and a member of numerous other professional associations. He received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Thiel College in 1985, the Exceptional Service Award from the Wisconsin Society for Jewish Learning in 1987, and a special citation from the Special Libraries Association in 1979.
People in the news
Virginia Andrews,Texas Tech University Libraries Automation Coordinator, has received a 1989 Outstanding Achievement Award from Texas Tech University. Andrews has worked for the University Library for 29 years as cataloger, assistant head of cataloging, head of cataloging, and OCLC coordinator. She is a member of ALA and vicechair/chair-elect of the Automation and T echnology Interest Group of the Texas Library Association.
Charlotta Hensley,assistant director for research and development at the University of Colorado at Boulder Libraries, has received the 1988-89 President’s University Service Award. Hensley was recognized for the amount of time and effort she volunteered as editor of Frontiers: A Journal of Women Studies. Her $2,000 award will be given to the journal at her request. An ACRL member, Hensley is a past Councilor-at-Large (1984-1988) and RTSD President (1982).
William V. Jackson,library professor at the University of Texas at Austin, visited Nicaragua in June and was the keynote speaker at a meeting on librarianship in that country. A specialist in Latin American librarianship, Jackson met in Managua with library directors of local universities and gave several lectures on the development of education for librarianship in Latin America. Sponsored by USIS, the conference was the first discussion of Nicaragua’s library needs in many years.
Anne F. Rorertshas resigned her position of librarian at the State University of New York at Albany, after 22 years of service, to teach a graduate course in children’s literature for the School of Education at the University. An active member of ALA and ACRL, Roberts chaired the Bibliographic Instruction Section in 1981-1982 and initiated the pre-ALA dinners and the Morris Jones traveling workshops. She has authored several books and articles in the fields of bibliographic instruction, public relations, and children’s literature, and currently serves on the board of the Library Literacy Project under the auspices of the American Reading Council in New York City.
Ronald E. Wyllys,dean of the University of Texas at Austin’s Graduate School of Library and Information Science, has announced his resignation from that position effective August 31, 1990. He plans to return to full-time teaching and conducting research in computer processing of natural language information and quantitative linguistics. Wyllys joined the UT Austin faculty in 1972 as an assistant professor. He has taught courses in research methods, systems analysis and design, library automation, library operations research, and the GSLIS basic introductory course. He has also taught a seminar on the future of information science. Wyllys was named acting dean of the GSLIS in August 1982 and was appointed dean of the school in March of 1984. Under his direction the number of doctoral students has more than doubled and the GSLIS Foundation has grown from approximately $137,000 to approximately $810,000. The school was also the first in North America to establish two endowed professorships in archives education.

Retirements
Katherine Cveljo,an ALA and ACRL member for 30 years, retired from the School of Library and Information Sciences at the University of North Texas in Denton in May 1988. Since then she has continued to devote time to the doctoral program at the University, and was named professor emeritus in December 1988. She was selected for a Fulbright Grant to participate for five months in the 1989-1990 binational program of educational exchange between the United States and Yugoslavia. In June 1989 she was awarded a distinguished member award for her contribution to business librarianship during the Business/Finance Division, Special Libraries Association Conference in New York. Cveljo holds a Ph.D. in Library and Information Science from Case Western Reserve University.
Barbara McGillretired in April from her position as serials librarian at Oberlin College, Ohio.
Richard L. Snyder,director of Hagerty Library, Drexel University, Philadelphia, retired in June after more than 24 years of service. Snyder went to Drexel in 1965 from MIT, where he had been associate director. He also lectured at Simmons College and held several professional positions at Indiana U niversity. A member of the board of Documentation Abstracts and Union Library Catalogue of Pennsylvania, Snyder also played a key role in the formation of PALINET, serving as its chairman, vice-president, and president. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Toronto and his M LS from Indiana U niversity.
Ruth Lane Wilkins,director of the University ofUtah Law Library, retired in May after lôyears of service.
Deaths
Beryl H. Manne,supervisor of the university archives and research collections at Washington University in St. Louis, died on June 22, 1989. Manne, 61, served as the university archivist for 18 years and as such was instrumental in developing and building a research collection of national significance for its documentation of the St. Louis region and Washington University.
Howard Sullivan,former assistant director of collections development for Wayne State University’s Purdy/Kresge Library, died in August. A native of Bridgeport, Connecticut, Sullivan graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1942, then received his MLS from Columbia University in 1951. In 1942 he worked as a radio news reporter for Yankee Network Inc.; from 1942-1946 hewas communications chief for the U. S. Army Air Force; from 1946-1949 he was a news reporter/editor for Yankee Network Inc.; and from 1950-1955 he was an order librarian at the University of Connecticut. In 1956 he joined the staff of the Wayne State University Library as a bibliographer, then later assumed responsibility for collection development and served as a librarian in Purdy Library. Remaining active since his retirement in 1986, Sullivan had recently completed a publication titled French Language and Literature: An Annotated Bibliography.
