ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
Standards for Faculty Status Approved
In significant action at the annual meeting of the Association of College and Research Libraries, the membership overwhelmingly voted to accept as a working document the “Standards for Faculty Status for College and University Librarians.” Upon the recommendation of the Committee on Academic Status, however, item four of the proposal (see the June 1971 issue of CRL News), the section on education, was deleted. A number of attempts to otherwise alter the document were voted down and the standards will now become the basis for discussions to be held with the American Association of University Professors, the Association of American Colleges, and other professional and educational organizations.
Having voted to accept “Standards for Faculty Status,” the members then turned to methods of implementing them. In a resolution which pointed out the necessity of a separate office for academic status at ACRL and which noted that the proposed ALA Program of Action for Mediation, Arbitration and Investigation was inadequate, it was resolved that the ACRL Board should secure funding for the establishment of such an office. It was further resolved that failing to achieve funding from ALA, ACRL should impose a fee of five dollars upon each of its individual members and ten dollars on each of its institutional members. Passed by membership, the resolution was referred by the Board of Directors to an ad hoc committee to be appointed by President Reason. It was indicated that such a fee would require a mail vote of all ACRL members.
In other action the membership:
Approved for the first time a motion which will liberalize procedures for amending the constitution. Final approval of this amendment will be sought at the Annual Conference in Chicago next year.
Adopted a resolution strongly objecting to the ALA Committee on Program Evaluation and Support reduction of Funds for CHOICE and the proposed reduction of CRL News to a bimonthly publication. (At the ALA Executive Board meeting on June 26, it was agreed that the News should continue to be published monthly.)
Received a report on the work of the ACRL Task Force on Goals, Structure and Finance. ■■
