Ann-Christe Young

Linda Slusar,coordinator of the Library Technical Assistant Program at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, has won the Library Mosaics and the Council on Library/ Media Technician’s 2000 award for Outstanding Supporter of Support Staff. Paulette Feld, management information technician 2 at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, is the winner of Library Mosaics and the Council on Library/Media Technician’s 2000 award for Outstanding Support Staff.

Jana Varlejs,associate professor in the School of Communication, Information and Library Studies at Rutgers University, has won the research award for the best published research by a New Jersey librarian in 1999. The award is for her article “On Their Own: Librarians’ Self-Directed, Work-Related Learning,” which was published in the April 1999 issue of Library Quarterly. The award was presented at the New Jersey Library Association’s annual conference in April.

Appointments

Rosie L. Albritton

Rosie L. Albrittonhas been appointed director of the college library at Florida Memorial College in Miami. From 1993 to 1999 she served as assistant professor of library and information science at Wayne State University in Detroit. Before that, she served as assistant to the director of libraries for research, grants, and planning at the University of Missouri, Columbia, and held graduate assistantships in research and teaching at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Albritton is coauthor with Thomas Shaughnessy of Developing Leadership Skills: A SourceBook for Librarians. Her other publications include a chapter in Untold Stories: Civil Rights, Libraries and Black Librarianship. She has also published several articles based on her award-winning research of “transformational leadership” in academic libraries.

Martha B. Gouldhas been appointed chair of the U.S. National Commission on Libraries and Information Science, replacing the late Jeanne Hurley Simon. Gould was appointed to the commission in 1993 and reappointed to a five-year term in 1998. She is the retired director of the Washoe County Library. Her career includes work at the New York Public Library, the Nevada State Library, and the Los Angeles Public Library. She has served as president of the Nevada Library Association, a member of the Legislative Committee of ALA, a member of ALA Council, and a member of the ALA Intellectual Freedom Committee. She was named Nevada Librarian of the “Years” in 1993; received the International Reading Association Leadership in Literacy Award from the Sierra Nevada Chapter; honored as the Woman of Distinction in Human Rights by the Soroptimist International of Reno South; and named “A Woman of the Nineties” by Nevada Women Publications. She teaches a distance education class in Library Administration at the University of Nevada.

Barbara G. Preecehas been appointed executive director of the Boston Library Consortium. Preece, who comes to the Consortium from her position as professor and acting dean for Technical and Automation Services at the University of Southern Illinois-Carbondale, brings extensive research library administrative experience to the post. As chair of the Automated Interlibrary Lending Taskforce of the Big 12 Plus Libraries Consortium, Preece led efforts to develop a seamless resource-sharing system. Under her leadership, the first Illinois Interlibrary Loan Conference was hosted by the ILLNET OCLC User’s Group. Her knowledge of consortial project management and cooperative lending programs will strongly focus the BLC agenda on developing innovative information technology services as a shared research and learning asset.

Retirements

Renee Feinberghas retired from her position as reference librarian at Brooklyn College.

Carolyn Gottneid,cataloger at the University of California, Irvine, has retired.

Tim Hoyer,head of Bancroft Technical Services at the University of California (UC), Berkeley, has retired. He began working in the Catalog Division in Bancroft in 1972 and eventually headed up its copy cataloging unit. In the 1980s, Hoyer conceived and managed a plan to accomplish a retrospective conversion of Bancroft’s entire card file of printed materials. He secured grant funding for a three-year project to convert the manuscript collections card file to an online system. At the national level, Hoyer was involved in the development of the Encoded Archival Description, which has been adopted by the Library of Congress as a national standard for the machine-readable description of archival collections and serves as the basis for the university’s Online Archive of California. Some of his other grant-writing includes: the California Heritage project to digitize and mount 25,000 images; the Finding Aids project to mount the UC system’s finding aids for manuscript and other collections on the Web; and he sought funding to create a finding aid for the 400,000 negatives of the San Francisco Call newspaper’s photographic morgue.

John B. Smithhas retired from his position as chief librarian at the Bronx Community College.

Larry C. Sniderhas retired from California State University (CSU), Long Beach, following 29 years of service to the campus community, most recently as science, philosophy, and religious studies librarian. Snider had worked at the CSU Library since March 1970, first as humanities reference librarian, then as circulation services librarian before taking his current position. During the 1980s he served as Western Regional Representative to the OCLC Interlibrary Loan Committee and was heavily involved in the initial implementation of the OCLC interlibrary loan module. He was active in university and library governance, serving on the Faculty Personnel Policy Council, the Library RTP Committee, and he chaired the Librarian Collection Development and Management Committee.

Louise Spanhas retired from her position as director of media services at LaGuardia Comnunity College Library.

Deaths

Thomas V. Atkins,former chief librarian at Hunter College CUNY died last November. Prior to coming to Hunter, Atkins was a member of the Baruch College Library faculty, where he designed, directed, and taught the first comprehensive undergraduate and graduate bibliographic instruction program in CUNY. He also established and developed the Graduate Business Resource Center at Baruch in support of business research. Before coming to the United States, Atkins served as manager/analyst for the Warsaw (Poland) Bureau of the New York Times; jailed several times, he escaped from Poland in 1963. Atkins is the coauthor of Access to Information: Library Research Methods (Collegium, 1979); editor-in-chief of Cross-Reference Index: A Subject Heading Guide (Bowker, 1974; 2nd ed. 1989); author of several articles; and developer of Knowbiz, a software program to locate business information.

Heidi Synnatzschke-Cochran,56, died on February 8, 2000. She had been with the University of Virginia since 1973, where she served as the Germanic and Slavic languages cataloger. Synnatzschke-Cochran was a member of ACRL’s Western European Specialists Section, previously serving on the Research and Planning subcommittee. She was also an active member of the Online Audiovisual Catalogers and Verein Deutscher Bibliothekare, Germany. In 1991, she published “Berlin—unmissverstandliche Widerspiegelungen”—a bibliography on the Berlin Wall.

David Dickey,director of the Zondervan Library at Taylor University in Upland, Indiana, died March 24. A 1965 graduate of Taylor, Dickey had been employed at Taylor since 1972. He was active in the leadership of the Private Academic Library Network of Indiana (PALNI). Besides his professional activities as a librarian, Dickey had an avid interest in the fine and performing arts and in state and local history. He was an organizing member of the Upland Historical Society. Dickey recently traveled to Austria, where he taught a course on major motion pictures filmed in the Salzburg, Austria, area. ■
