Peter Jermann, preservation officer in St. Bonaventure University’s Friedsam Memorial Library, New York, re- ceived a patent for the new binder he designed to secure magazines and other documents. There’s a catch to Jer- mann’s version of the binder. In fact, the catch is in the catch itself. Two adjustable straps wrap around the binder and tightly secure documents when fastened. Unlike conventional binders, Jermann’s fastener allows the binder to adjust to the exact thickness of the enclosed items, which can easily be inserted or re- moved, and the binder closes tightly so it can be shelved just like a book.
