•Arab Oil: A Bibliography of Materials in the Library of Congress,compiled by George Dimitri Selim (203 pages, 1983), is now available from the Library of Congress. The book brings together references to Arab oil in articles, books, dissertations, maps, papers, periodicals, reports, and audiovisual materials, all in Western languages that use the Roman alphabet. Supplementing the bibliography is a list of abbreviations, a name index, and title and subject indexes. •Cataloging Titles in Microform Setsis based on the report of a 1980 study, conducted for ARL by Information Systems Consultants, Inc. , which led to the establishment of the ARL Microform Project. The monograph provides a chronology of the study, focusing on the most important issues that were addressed in each of the study’s four phases. •Central Serials Record(85 fiche, 42x reduction) is the ninth microfiche edition of the University of Washington’s serial holdings current as of February 1983. The cost is $25 and, since there may be two or three editions yearly, standing orders are accepted. •The Charles Coffin Collection at Tusculum College: The Original Library of Greeneville College 1794-1827has been published by Tusculum College under an NEH grant. This COM catalog contains descriptive cataloging for a collection of 1,656 volumes which comprised the original library of the oldest chartered college west of the Alleghenies. Tusculum, founded as Greeneville College in 1794, is the only post-Revolutionary frontier college to retain its original library substantially intact. •The Continental Army,by Robert K. Wright, Jr. (451 pages, April 1983), is the third recent volume on specialized aspects of the War of American Independence published by the U.S. Army Center of Military History. This work explores in detail how the regular troops were organized and where they fought, and emphasizes the interplay of political, economic, and military influences on the evolution of one of the nation’s major institutions. •The DEAKDEX, a computerized index to 13,0 items in the W. A. Deacon MS Collection at the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library, University of Toronto, has been compiled by Michele Lacombe, John Lennox, and Clara Thomas of the York University Department of English. The DEAKDEX conists of a subject, author, date, and subject listing for letters to and from William Arthur Deacon (1890-1977), literary critic, and his hundreds of correspondents, including prominent Canadian writers. It includes a user’s guide and is available on microfiche for $15 for libraries and $20 for individuals. For information, contact J. W. •The Directory of Faculty Contracts and Bargaining Agents in Institutions of Higher Education, by Joel M. Douglas and Carol Rosenberg (75 pages, 9th volume, January 1983), has been published by the National Center for the Study of Collective Bargaining in Higher Education and the Professions. An introduction summarizes unionization among faculty in 1982. •The Future of Libraries (43 pages, 1982), papers from the SUNY-Albany University Libraries’ Millionth Volume Celebration, September 24, 1982, represent a panel discussion by librarians, administrators, faculty, and students, on the future of research libraries from varying viewpoints. •A Guide to Drug Information and Literature: An Annotated Bibliography (2d ed., 1983) has been prepared for use in library orientation programs for medical and pharmacy students. Annotations describe the scope, arrangement, content, and use of each source. •A Guide to Pacific Northwest Native American Materials in the Melville Jacobs Collection and in Other Archival Collections in the University of Washington Libraries (113 pages, 1983) includes many unique materials, among them Native American-related sound recordings and linguistic and ethnographic field notes. A related monograph, Explorers’ and Early Travellers' Journals Documenting Early Contacts with Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest, 1741-1900 (101 pages, 1983) has also been published by the University Libraries. The more than 680 citations are to the earliest imprints of works in the Pacific Northwest Collection which display significant ethnographic information. •Interlibrary Loan in ARL Libraries,SPEC Kit #92 (March 1983, 98 pages), examines the variety of ways that university libraries operate their interlibrary loan office. The kit includes survey results, 11 policy and procedure documents, four examples of user materials, seven documents on cooperative agreements and network services, and a short bibliography. •Legal Looseleafs in Print 1983,by Arlene L. Stern (289 pages, 3d ed., 1983), lists over 2,100 looseleaf titles by 200 publishers with a detailed subject index and a directory of publishers. For each looseleaf the following information is provided: author, publisher, date of publication, number of volumes, price, frequency, cost of supplementation, and LC number. •The third annual edition of the Library Education Statistical Report (1982) is a comprehensive collection of statistical information about 81 graduate library education programs in the United States and Canada. The report consists of five sections: faculty, students, curriculum, income and expenditures, and continuing education. • The Louisiana Union Catalog (3d microfiche ed., Louisiana Library Association, 1983) provides an author, title, and subject index to items about Louisiana, set in Louisiana or by Louisiana authors, which have been submitted by libraries in and outside the state through 1982. The index is on 42x microfiche, and is supplemented by Advance Sheets, a hardcopy bimonthly publication. An annual subscription to the Advance Sheets is $30; a combined order for the 1983-84 volumes and the microfiche catalog may be purchased for $125. •The Manual for Accessioning, Arrangement, and Description of Manuscripts and Archives (98 pages, 2d ed., 1982) demonstrates how to transfer arrangement controls into an integrated descriptive program. It presents a system of intellectual control based on the principle of provenance and the concept of establishing progressively refined controls by record levels on an accession-byaccession basis. This second edition includes new sections on principles of inventory construction and preparation and is issued in looseleaf format. •Microtexts in Cornell University Libraries,by Joan Smith (173 pages, 1982), describes important and little-known collections held in microfilm, microfiche, microcard, and microprint, and lists and annotates such user aids as indexes and bibliographies. Especially noteworthy is a comprehensive guide to the hard-to-use U. S. Joint Publications Research Service (JPRS) Translations and Reports. •MULS: A Union List of Serials(3d rev. ed., 1982) includes a half million holding locations for serials held in libraries in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. •New Directions in Library and Information Science Educationis a monthly newsletter published by King Research, Inc., dedicated to a project that seeks to determine the present and future competencies needed by library and information science professionals and to examine the educational requirements for achieving these competencies. The first issue (March 1983) covers the objectives of the 18-month federally-funded project, its current status, questions it will address, upcoming activities, and an invitation for readers to participate. •Student Assistants in ARL Libraries,SPEC Kit #91 (February 1983, 98 pages), points to a number of trends and issues that are currently surfacing regarding the training and use of Student employees. The flyer suggests that changes in library operations and technology require careful evaluation of student tasks. The kit contains three examples of procedures and policies, three recruitment and hiring documents, two job description and classifications examples, four samples of orientation and training, and three documents on performance appraisal and grievance. •A Study of the Continuing Education Needs of Alberta Library/Information Personnel contains the results of a survey conducted by Library and Information Consultants, Ltd., in 1982 for the Library Association of Alberta. •Tarleton Cooks: A Collection of Recipes for Fine Dining and Entertaining from Tarlton Law Librarywill be the title of a commemorative cookbook being compiled and edited by the library at the University of Texas School of Law. Recipe contributions are being made by Tarlton employees past and present. Any Tarlton alumni with recipes to offer may send them to Cookbook, Tarlton Law Library, 727 East 26th St., Austin, TX 78705. The cookbook will also include a bibliography of other cookbooks and recipe collections compiled and produced by legal groups throughout the world. ■■
