Ross W. Atkinson has been appointed assistant university librarian for collection development at the University of Iowa Libraries, Iowa City, assuming the responsibilities formerly held by the late bibliographer,

Frank S. Hanlin. Atkinson’s most recent assignment was that of humanities bibliographer at Northwestern University where he has served since 1977. His new appointment was effective April 1.

Atkinson holds master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Germanic languages and literatures from

Harvard University. His MLS is from Simmons College, Roston. Atkinson was in military intelligence in the U.S. Army for four years, was a teaching fellow at Harvard, and has had experience in both the Widener and Harvard Law School Libraries.

He has published in his fields of academic interest including the theory of bibliography and 19thcentury German literature. He is currently active in ACRL’s Ribliographic Instruction Section and the Western European Specialists Section, and will represent the University of Iowa on the Collection Development and Management Committee of the Research Libraries Group.

Ross W. Atkinson

James R.Cox, currently the assistant to the university librarian at the University of California at Los Angeles, has accepted appointment as the university librarian at Griffith University, Rrisbane, Australia, following the recent retirement of the foundation librarian, S.R. Page. He will begin his appointment in November.

Although nearly all his professional career has been at UCLA, Cox is well known to many Australian colleagues having been a Fulbright scholar and senior lecturer at the Library School of the Canberra College of Advanced Education in 1972. He was also a visiting lecturer at the Graduate School of Librarianship, Monash University, Victoria.

Cox has been closely involved with the development of automated library systems for UCLA and for the University of California in general, and has also specialized in the application and implementation of the U.S. Copyright Law. He has published widely in professional literature and is the author of an annotated bibliography.

Arnold Hirshonhas been named assistant director for technical services at Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, effective May 2. For the last five years he has been the assistant head of the Cataloging Department at Duke University, and since 1979 he has served as editor of the ALA Resources and Technical Services Division’s R TSD Newsletter.

Active in library automation planning, Hirshon is the author of the recent SPEC Kit #90 on Integrated Library Information Systems in ARL Libraries. He was an invited participant to the Airlie House conference to discuss the proposed MARC format on holdings and locations, and he serves on the ANSI Z39 Subcommittee Won non-serial holdings statements at the summary and detailed levels.

At Duke University, he was part of a team that recommended a systems architecture for an integrated library system. For the last two years Hirshon has served on two committees that prepared functional systems specifications for the online catalog being developed cooperatively through the Triangle Research Libraries Network with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University.

WillisM. Hubbard has been appointed librarian of Gettysburg College, Pennsylvania. Hubbard succeeds retiring librarian James H. Richards who supervised the design and construction of the Musselman Library which is in its first full year of operation.

For the past six years Hubbard has been the director of the Hugh Stephens Library of Stephens College, Columbia, Missouri. He is serving a second term on the ACRL board of directors and is a former chair of the College Library Section of ACRL.

Hubbard has also served as head librarian of Eureka College (1968-1977), director of institutional research and planning at Eureka College (1972-1977), assistant social sciences librarian at Southern Illinois University (1967-1968), and assistant science librarian at SIU (1962-1967).

Hubbard also serves on two ACRL ad hoc committees: the Task Force on the Research Needs of Academic/Research Libraries and the Task Force on Performance Measures. He has served two terms on the Missouri Libraries Network Board and was chair of that board in 1980-1981.

He holds an MLS degree from the University of Illinois and a master’s degree in political science from Southern Illinois University. He has been a consultant to a number of private colleges and has presented research papers at a number of national conferences.

Harvey Varnethas been appointed library coordinator for Sultan Qaboos University in Muscat,

Oman, effective this September. The university will open its doors to its first class of students in 1986. Varnet will coordinate development activities for the Library, the Center for Educational Technology, and the Computer Center.

Varnet has served as Library Learning Center director and associate professor of interdisciplinary studies at Kentucky Wesleyan College, Owensboro, from 1981-1983. Earlier he served as assistant director for public services (1977-1981) and coordinator of administrative and technical services (1971-1977) for the Learning Resources Center at Bristol Community College, Fall River, Massachusetts. Varnet was also head librarian for the Norton Company Research & Development Department, Worcester, Massachusetts.

In 1979-1980 Varnet was a Fulbright Professor in educational technology and consultant for the design of an Audiovisual Centre at the University of Calabar, Nigeria. An active ACRL member, he is completing a term on the ACRL Standards and Accreditation Committee. He was also secretary of the ACRL Community and Junior College Libraries Section in 1980-1981.

Varnet holds both a doctorate and a master’s degree in library science from Simmons College, a master of education in instructional media from Bridgewater State College, and a bachelor’s degree from Southeastern Massachusetts University.

Dierdre Boyle,faculty member in media studies at the New School for Social Research, New York, and member of the CLS Non-Print Media and the College Library Committee, has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for a historical study of independent video documentaries.

Willie Edwards,librarian of the University of Michigan Institute of Gerontology, Ann Arbor, has been awarded the 1983 Wilbur J. Cohen Award in recognition of her achievements in developing and directing one of the largest library collections in gerontology and geriatrics. The award is presented annually by the University of Michigan School of Education to recognize innovation in areas of Dean Emeritus Cohen’s lifetime interests. Edwards was also cited for her influence on public policy, the design of social programs, and the training of professionals who work with and on behalf of older people.

Jo Anne Hawkins and R. Bruce Miller were presented with the 1983 Librarian Excellence

Award by the University of Texas at Austin. Hawkins, head of the Circulation Services Department in the Perry-Castañeda Library, and Miller, special assistant in the Automation and Information Systems Planning Division of the General Libraries, were chosen for their distinguished contributions to the University of Texas General Libraries.

Hwa-Wei Lee,director of libraries at Ohio University, Athens, presented a short course on “Management of Agricultural Information Centers” in Bogor, Indonesia, on April 19-29. The course, sponsored by the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations, followed ten days of preparation at FAO headquarters in Rome. Lee was among four international lecturers selected for their expertise in information center and library management. In December 1982 Lee taught a similar course in the People’s Republic of China for managers of scientific and technical information centers.

Patricia Glass Schumanhas been awarded the Fannie Simon Award for outstanding contributions in publishing and librarianship by the publishing division of the Special Libraries Association. Schuman, a former associate editor of School Library Journal, is now president of Neal-Schuman Publishers, a firm which specializes in reference and professional books for librarians.

The award, which will be presented at the SLA annual meeting in New Orleans this June, cited her accomplishments at Neal-Schuman where she “keeps abreast of technical developments of great interest to libraries and management/economic problems which assail libraries of all kinds.”

The author of numerous articles and books including Materials for Occupational Education: An Annotated Source Guide (2d ed., 1983) and Social Responsibilities and Libraries (1977), Schuman also teaches a course at Columbia University on Modern Book Publishing. She has served on ALA Council and is currently a member of the Committee on Program Evaluation and Support. A founder of the ALA Social Responsibilities Round Table and the Women’s Task Force, she has also served as chair of the Publishing Committee of CLENE and was a member of the C&RL News Editorial Board.

RETIREMENTS

Marguerite Hermann,music cataloger at the University of California, Berkeley, retired in December.

Chester Hobson,senior music cataloger in the Music Section, Library of Congress, retired on February 25 after over 32 years of Federal service.

Elaine Reaman,head of the Arts Circulation Department at the University of Waterloo, Ontario, retired on May 31 after 22 years of service.

DEATHS

Marilyn Satterlee,Senin Collection consultant for the University of Illinois, Urbana, died on March 26 after a long illness.

Philip Taggart McLean,librarian emeritus of the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, died April 6 at the age of 79. When he retired in 1969 he had served the library nearly 45 years.

John Browning White,associate professor of library science at Northern Illinois University from 1963 to 1972, died on March 10 in Colorado Springs. ■■
