Ann-Christe Galloway

Deborah Barreau,assistant professor at the University of North Carolina (UNC)-Chapel Hill’s School of Information and Library Science, has been named Outstanding Information Science Teacher for 2002 by the American Society for Information Science and Technology. She specializes in the areas of information systems and technology, organizational behavior, and digital libraries.

Teresa Burkhas been selected as the first Woodruff Librarian Fellow for the General Libraries of Emory University. During her yearlong fellowship, she will work as a beginning librarian in the special collections and archives division.

Jane Burkehas stepped down as president and CEO of Endeavor Information Systems and will not renew her contract with Endeavor and Elsevier. “The marketplace that we used to know as library automation is changing so quickly that I really feel that Endeavor needs a fresh view of how to utilize all of the combined Endeavor and Elsevier strengths to our customers’ best advantage,” said Burke, who joined Endeavor in March 1995. Under her leadership, Endeavor released the flagship Voyager integrated library management system and the instrumental digital library system, ENCompass.

Claudia Gollop,an associate professor at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill’s School of Information and Library Science, has received a grant supplement for $110,523 to continue a research project titled “Analytic Techniques for Qualitative Metasynthesis.” The award is from the National Institute of Nursing Research/National Institutes of Health and will support this project through February 2005. The project is directed toward the development of a set of guidelines to conduct metasyntheses of qualitative findings in health science research and to design a highly interactive Web-based system and interactive handbook that will contain the guidelines.

Frances Stith Nilsson,manager of collection development at Babson College, has been awarded the Walter H. Carpenter Prize for exceptional contributions to the college.

Catherine Quinlan,university librarian at the University of British Columbia (UBC) since 1997, received the Outstanding Alumni Award for 2002 from Dalhousie University’s Associated Alumni and the School of Library and Information Studies. From 1985 to 1990, she was director of the Health Sciences Library and a tenured associate professor in the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University of Newfoundland. From 1990 to 1997, Quinlan was director of libraries and chief librarian at the University of Western Ontario, becoming the youngest Dalhousie graduate to be appointed the head of a member library of the Canadian Association of Research Libraries. Since joining UBC, she has initiated a comprehensive review of all library operations and has increased the library endowments significantly. Quinlan is currently serving on committees of ALA, Association of Research Libraries, Council of Library Resources, and the Council of the Centre for Research Librarians. In Canada, she was on the Board of Directors for the Canadian Association of Research Libraries and a Board member for “Our Roots/Nos racines,” a national digitization project sponsored by the University of Calgary and Laval University.

Jerry Saye,professor at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill’s School of Information and Library Science, has been named a Fulbright teacher for the spring 2003 semester. From February through June he will be based in the Department of Library and Information Science and Book Studies, Faculty of Arts at the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia. He will address topics such as the organization of information approaches and initiatives in the United States and the history of the book in the Western Hemisphere.

Barbara Wildemuth,professor at the University of North Carolina (UNC)-Chapel Hill’s School of Information and Library Science, has been named the school’s new associate dean for undergraduate studies. Wildemuth played an active role in the creation of the new undergraduate degree, serving as chair of UNC’s ad hoc undergraduate major committee. She is also an adjunct associate professor in the department of biomedical engineering at UNC’s School of Medicine.

Appointments

Lisa Browarhas been named university librarian at New School University in New York. She previously served as bibliographer for English and American Literature, Film Studies, and Philosophy and director of the Lilly Library at Indiana University. She was also assistant director for Rare Books and Manuscripts at the New York Public Library, curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts at Vassar College, and assistant curator of American Literature at Yale University’s Beinecke Library. Former chair of the ACRL Rare Books and Manuscripts Section, Browar is coeditor of RBM: A Journal of Rare Books, Manuscripts, and Special Collections.

Tjalda Nautahas been appointed director of the James P. Adams Library at Rhode Island College in Providence. She started her professional career in public libraries, changed to academic business libraries with a reference position at Babson (Massachusetts) College, and later held the position of head of reader services at Bentley College. She was most recently director of the library at Bentley College. She has made several consulting visits to various academic institutions in Estonia to assist them in developing library resources for their newly developing business community.

Shelley Arlen,associate librarian at the University of Florida, has been named interim Tjalda Nauta chair of the collection management department.

Robert Arndtis now reference/instructional services librarian at the University of North Carolina-Pembroke.

Pamela Arroueshas been named electronic resources catalog librarian at California State Polytechnic University-Pomona.

Mario Ascenciois the new head of acquisitions and gifts librarian at George Mason University.

Morag Boydhas been appointed division head of the new bibliographic services department at Illinois State University’s Milner Library.

Peggy Burgeis now humanities liaison librarian at the University of Puget Sound Library.

Anne Colemanis now electronic resources/ media catalog librarian at the University of North Carolina-Pembroke.

Angela Copehas joined the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Libraries as a cartographic materials catalog librarian.

Kim B. Cullinanhas been appointed reference librarian at Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Missouri.

Carl Danishas been named instructional services/reference librarian at the University of North Carolina-Pembroke.

Anne-Marie S. Davishas been appointed evening access services librarian at the University of Washington Libraries, Odegaard Undergraduate Library.

Retirements

Charles Brunkhas retired after 30 years of service as a monograph cataloger at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) Libraries. He was granted academic staff emeritus status by the UWM chancellor.

Deaths

Betty Jo Peterson,who served as children’s librarian and later as children’s services coordinator at the Kern County Library in Bakersfield, California, died September 23, 2002. She retired in 1996, after working 23 years as the curriculum/juvenile librarian at the Henry Madden Library at California State University-Fresno. In ALA, she served on many committees, including the Newbery, Caldecott, Laura Ingalls Wilder, and Notable Children’s Books committees. She served also on the John and Patricia Beatty Award Committee of the California Library Association and was an active member of several other library associations. She was the founding vice president of Arne Nixon Center Advocates, the support group of the Arne Nixon Center for the Study of Children’s Literature at California State University-Fresno. ■
