NEWS

No. 5, May 1969

ACRL News Issue (A) of College & Research Libraries, Vol. 30, No. 3

Richard Martin Dougherty, associate director of libraries at the University of Colorado, will become editor of College & Research Libraries at the end of the summer, succeeding David Kaser, now in his seventh year in that post.

Dr. Dougherty will bring to his new task an extensive experience in librarianship, scholarship, and journal editing, including periods of service as assistant editor of both Library Resources & Technical Services and the Journal of Library Automation. He has published a score of articles in the library press, has written several landmark reports, and is joint author of the book Scientific Management of Library Operations.

Born in East Chicago in 1935, Dr. Dougherty took his bachelor’s degree from Purdue University before going on to Rutgers for his MLS and PhD degrees. Prior to taking his present position in 1966, he was head of the acquisitions department at the University of North Carolina. In addition to his library practice, he has also lectured or taught at Rutgers and Syracuse Universities and at the Universities of Southern California and North Carolina. Somehow he has also found time in his young life to serve two years in the Navy, to wrestle, to work in steel mills, and to raise three fine children.

Dr Dougherty will be aided in his new assignment by William Henry Webb who will succeed Mrs. Elizabeth Swint as CRL assistant editor. Presently University Bibliographer at Boulder, Mr. Webb holds degrees from San Luis Rey College, Arizona State University, and Indiana University, at the last of which he is now a candidate for the PhD.

A news editor, to succeed David Doerrer, and a new editorial board will be appointed later.
