Pam Spiegel

Arlyne Jackson,librarian of the Littauer Library at Har- vard University, has taken a leave from Harvard to par- ticipate in the Libraiy of Con- gress’ (LC) Leadership Devel- opment Program. The 15- month program is designed to develop leaders for the library profession and in- crease the number of minority-group librarians pre- pared to assume library leadership positions. Ten people were selected for the program, which was funded by a gift from John Kluge, chair of the LC Madison Society.

Erlinda J. Regnerand Amy D. Seetoo were recently installed as president and vice-president of the Asian/Pacific American Librarians As- sociation (APALA), re- spectively. Regner is business reference li- brarian at the Chicago Public Library. Seetoo, who is program assis- tant with the Michigan Initiative for Women’s Health, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, previously served as executive director and president of the Chinese- American Librarians Association.

Andrew H. Wang,director of OCLC’s Asia Pacific Services, has been appointed advisor of the National Central Libraiy of Taiwan for 1995. Wang said, “I hope to help the National Central Library and OCLC work closely in providing information to libraries in Taiwan and in strengthening the information bridge between the East and the West."

Larry Comptonis the new librarian for the Reactor Engineering Technology Center at Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque.

Shana Fair,formerly acting library director at Ohio Uni- versity, Zanesville, has been named library director there.

Douglas M. Ferrieris now director of the Arnulfo L. Oliveira Memorial Library at the University of Texas at Brownsville in partnership with Texas Southmost Col- lege. He most recently served as dean of the library at Texas Wesleyan University.

Paul Schrodthas been appointed librarian in the John D. Werkman endowed chair of Theological Bibliography at Methodist Theological School in Delaware, Ohio.

Faye Abramshas been appointed document delivery librarian at the University of Waterloo, Ontario.

Scott A. Andersonhas been named business/economics librarian at Millersville University in Pennsylvania.

Althea Aschmannis now head of technical services at Emporia State University, Kansas.

Gary D. Byrdhas been named director of the Health Sciences Library at the University of Buffalo, State University of New York.

Cindy Buhihas been appointed reference librarian at Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina.

Robert L. Canidahas been named automated public services librarian at Pembroke State University, North Carolina.

Joan Careyhas been appointed reference librarian at Clark College in Vancouver, Washington.

Ruth Carterhas been promoted to assistant director for automated and technical services at the University of Pittsburgh Libraries.

Nancy Hayeshas joined the Science and Technology Library at the University of Akron as life sciences and medical bibliographer.

L. Dexter Honeycutt Jr.has been appointed serials librarian at Pembroke State University, North Carolina.

Kathryn Hornbyis now temporary reference librarian in the Woodward Biomedical Libraiy at the University of British Columbia.

Scott Kantorhas been named reference librarian at Yakima Valley Community College, Washington.

Kevin Lindstromhas been named reference and outreach librarian in the Science & Engineering Division of the Main Library at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver.

Michael Lorenzenis now bibliographic instructor and reference librarian at Ohio University, Zanesville.

Laura Minotthas been named assistant university librarian of public services at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois.

Janet Spaethhas been appointed bibliographic educational services librarian at the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks.

Joe Strawis now assistant professor of bibliography in the Bierce Library at the University of Akron, Ohio.

Richard Stringer-Hyehas been named head of access services in the Sarah Shannon Stevenson Library for Science and Engineering at Vanderbilt University, Nashville.

Dajin Sunis now head of East Asian technical services at the University of Pittsburgh.

Morag Sutherlandis now journalism, religion, and speech bibliographer at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois.

Pamela Vancehas been promoted to associate director of the University of Pittsburgh Libraries.

John Whelanhas been appointed reference librarian/selector for the Sarah Shannon Stevenson Library at Vanderbilt University, Nashville.

Jennifer Wuis now a librarian at North Seattle Community College.

Retirements

Graham Ellistonrecently retired as head of the Gifts and Exchanges Division at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver, a position he held since 1973. He began working at UBC as a cataloger in 1961.

Helen Mayohrecently retired as science reference librarian at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, after 19 years in that position.

Willie Scott,acting head of the Undergraduate Library at Southern Illinois University (SIU) at Carbondale, retired at the end of last year. Scott began his career serving as a catalog librarian at four colleges before switching to reference and instruction in 1972, when he joined the Undergraduate Library at SIU. He earned his B.A. from West Virginia State College in 1957, and his MLS from Western Reserve University in 1959.

Martha Shepard,librarian at the Alaska Resources Libraiy in Anchorage, retired in January. She had been working there since the 1970s.

Deaths

Cheryl Griffin,director of learning resources at Danville Community College (DCC), Virginia, since 1992, and DCC librarian from 1989 to 1992, was found dead at her home in October.

Roland Lanning,head of serials at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, from 1926 until his retirement in 1965, died late last year at the age of 94.
