ACRL Chapters

• A group of approximately fifty persons assembled on Friday, April 28, 1978, at Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia, for the first official meeting of the VIRGINIA CHAPTER OF ACRL. The chapter was extremely fortunate to have had for its first program an address by Richard D. Johnson, editor of College and Research Libraries‚ who spoke on “The Sprint into Print: High and Low Hurdles in Library Publishing.”

Prior to the program, a brief business meeting was held. After an extended discussion, the group went on record as wishing to investigate the possibility of affiliation with the College and University Section of the Virginia Library Association. Ruby Y. Weinbrecht, acting chairman, named a committee composed of Marjorie Dennin, Northern Virginia Community College; John Veenstra, George Mason University; and Sheila McGarr, Mary Washington College, to aid her in preparing a proposal to present to the College and University Section at the annual meeting in Williamsburg next November. The organizational structure of the chapter will be delayed until the question of affiliation has been worked out.— Ruby Y. Weinbrecht, Chairperson, Virginia Chapter.

• The Texas Chapter of ACRL is the College and University Libraries Division of the Texas Library Association, chaired in 1977-78 by Irene B. Hoadley, Texas A&M University.

The range of activities undertaken by the chapter was quite broad. Many accomplishments were achieved by committees. Four standing committees (Cooperation, Education, Information Dissemination, Research) and two ad hoc committees (Membership, Public Relations Policy) were formed.

A workshop on “Effects of Automation on Technical Services,” held May 20, 1977, under the joint sponsorship of TLA’s Acquisitions Round Table and Regional Group of Catalogers and Classifiers attracted ninety-nine persons. A workshop on “Integrating Online Reference Services in Libraries,” cosponsored by the TLA Reference Round Table, was held May 19, 1978, at the University of Texas at Austin. The chapter will cosponsor a workshop on AACR in 1979.

During 1977-78 the chapter made one research grant of $750 to Richard Day of the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio Library for a project entitled “Measuring Duplication of Monograph Acquisition in Four Texas Medical School Libraries.” A draft “Model Educational Information Policy for Texas Academic Libraries/Learning Resource Centers” was prepared by the Ad Hoc Committee on Public Relations Policy and will be made final following membership input.

The 1978 membership meeting, on April 6, 1978, in Fort Worth, featured Julie Virgo, ACRL executive secretary, speaking on “The Relevancy of Professional Associations in Librarianship.” Forms to survey members on legislative concerns of Texas academic librarians were distributed at the meeting by the Education Committee. Officers elected for 1978-79 are Gary L. Menges, General Libraries, the University of Texas at Austin, chairperson; Gene Gibson, Austin College, vice-chairperson; and Roberta Casella, Texas Tech University, secretary-treasurer.—Gary L. Menges.

• About forty-five Iowa academic librarians gathered at Coe College on April 28 to consider the virtues of management by objectives (MBO). The MBO workshop, sponsored by the COLLEGE and University Librarians Section (ACRL CHAPTER) of the Iowa Library Association, featured Bob Foley, executive director for staff and learning resources development of the Cedar Rapids Community Schools. The planning committee consisted of Laura Brault (Coe College), Dave Martin (University of Iowa), Steve Pandolfo (Grinnell College), Corinne Potter (St. Ambrose College), and Phil Van De Voorde (Iowa State University).

• Jerrold Orne, former director of the library and professor emeritus of library science, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, was the featured speaker at the annual spring conference of the Missouri Association of College and Research Libraries held at Stephens College, Columbia, Missouri, on April 22.

The theme of the one-day conference was “Zero Growth in Academic Libraries,” which generated much discussion among the members. A panel of Missouri academic librarians spoke on the issue as it pertained to their libraries. The panelists were: Monroe Hopkins, director, Dulaney Memorial Library, William Woods College, Fulton; Robert Miller, director, Thomas Jefferson Library, University of Missouri—St. Louis; Sylvia Oliver, director, Stamper Library, Moberly Area Junior College; and Helen Wigersma, director, Heames Learning Resources Center, Missouri Western State College, St. Joseph.
