Alaska Native Arts and Crafts, by Susan W. Fair (215 pages, 1985), describes the historical background of native Alaska groups, both Eskimo and Indian, as well as their individual art forms and how their technology is integrated into their culture. Over 200 color and historical black and white photos illustrate the arts and crafts, including ivory carvings, basketry, and ritual masks. Basic Computer Knowledge for Nonprofits(276 pages, 1985) provides extensive and detailed information on computers for the nonprofit community, and allows the nonprofit manager to skip much of the literature on sales. Funded by the Gannett Foundation and produced by Volun- teer-The National Center, this looseleaf manual pulls together information on computer literacy and resources specifically for nonprofit organizations as well as the general user who simply wants to become computer-literate. Of particular interest to libraries are sections on: assessing every major organizational function to determine whether each could be improved by using a computer or if it would be cost-effective to automate them; and alternatives to computerizing all at once, including collaboration with other nonprofit organizations. Bibliography of Commissions of Enquiry and Other Government-Sponsored Reports on the Commonwealth Caribbean, 1900-1975, compiled by Audrey Roberts (89 pages, September 1985), has been published as number 14 in the SALALM Bibliography and Reference Series. The Collection Development Manual of the National Library of Medicine serves as a guide for both NLM staff and book dealers in the selection of print and non-print materials for inclusion in the NLM collection. Users will find it valuable as a guide to the scope and extent of coverage by subject in the collection. This new manual supersedes the Library’s 1977 Scope arid Coverage Manual. A Directory of Library School Offerings on Music Librarianship (32 pages, 1985) has been compiled by the Music Library Association’s Education Committee from the responses to a questionnaire sent to all library schools on the ALA accreditation list. An Early Illustrated Books calendar for 1986 has been published by the Silver Buckle Press, a unique working museum of fine printing at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Featuring images from books in the University’s Department of Rare Books and Special Collections, the calendar contains an introductory essay and notes as well as space for jotting down daily appointments. The offset edition of the calendar is printed in burgundy, grey, and black on cream paper and retails for $7.95. A limited letterpress edition is printed in burgundy, gray, black, and silver on white paper and sells for $25. Every Writer’s Practical Guide to Copyright Law, by Ellen M. Kozak (43 pages, August 1985), gives answers to 50 questions that writers often ask, with all of them indexed by subject for easy reference. Some of the questions include: Can a museum charge for a reproduction of a photograph in its collection? What is a “collective work”? Can a person publish jokes as their own if they were heard in a bar or other public place? Copies are $4.95, available from Inkling Publications, P.O. Box 128, Alexandria, MN 56308.

Genealogical Prospecting in Nevada: A Guide to Nevada Directories, compiled by Joyce C. Lee (15 pages, June 1984), lists the holdings of city and county directories in Nevada libraries. A donation of $3.50 per copy is charged to cover the cost of printing and mailing, checks payable to the Nevada Library Association. The Gentle Art of Giving, by John R. Payne (8 pages, 1985), is a more formal presentation of the information given by the author in Cò-RL News, February 1985, pp.52-56. The pamphlet was prepared for donors, friends groups, and others in the philanthropic community and explains the impact of the Tax Reform Act of 1984 on charitable contributions. Copies of 1,000 or less are available for $1.90 each (plus handling) and can be bulk mailed in individual envelopes to the receiving organization or mailed directly to membership lists. The Gifts and Exchange Function in ARL Libraries, SPEC Kit #117 (September 1985), surveys 63 research libraries on their attitudes on gifts and exchange, in particular organizational change, the use of automation, changes in priorities, and the impact of the Tax Reform Act of 1984. The kit contains 11 examples of policies and procedures, including recent documents on the Tax Reform Act; two documents on automation use; eight responses regarding reorganizations; four sets of position descriptions; five illustrations of donor materials; the results of an unpublished RTSD survey; and a brief bibliography. The International Directory of Tactile Map Collections is a comprehensive list of tactile maps available for use, sale, or loan throughout the world. It was developed by the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped in cooperation with the Section of Libraries for the Blind of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA). Information was obtained through questionnaires sent to hundreds of agencies that produce or own tactile maps. The directory is free and may be obtained from the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, Library of Congress, Washington, DC 20542.

Profiles: Detailed Analyses of the Foreign Student Population, 1983/1984, edited by Marianthi Zikopoulos and Elinor G. Barber (103 pages, 1985) ‚ presents the results of a survey conducted by the Institute of International Education of all regionally accredited institutions of higher education in the United States to obtain data on the foreign students they enroll. Types of information presented are: the proportion of students from specific countries that are graduates or undergraduates; the proportion of students in specific fields of study that are graduates or undergraduates; the proportion of Nigeria’s students who are studying business and management and what percentage are male or female; the proportion of foreign students studying engineering that are from Africa or South and East Asia; the population mix of foreign students attending schools in Virginia or Alaska. Slavery in the Courtroom: An Annotated Bibli- ography of American Cases, compiled by Paul Finkelman, SUNY-Binghamton (313 pages, August 1985)‚ analyzes more than 80 pamphlets in the Library of Congress that relate to cases having to do with slaves in free jurisdictions, fugitive slaves, abolitionists in the North and South, slave revolts, and the African slave trade. The author presents the facts of each of 50 cases, spelling out the historical and legal significance in sufficient detail to make the volume useful to both specialist and nonspecialist. Spanish Rare Books of the Golden Age (1472-1700) (50 reels, 35mm film) is the first unit of a new microfilm collection published by Research Publications. Over 1,800 items cover drama, theology, the sciences, politics, and classical Greek and Latin texts in vernacular Spanish translations. Included are exceptionally old or out- of-print works, ranging from medieval pieces to prose and poetry composed at the dawning of the Age of Reason.
