SUSAN S. BAUGHMANhas been named university librarian at Clark University, Worcester, Massa- chusetts. She will oversee the Robert Hutchings Goddard Library as well as a new science library.

Before coining to Clark, Baughman was associ- ate librarian at the Gutman Library at Harvard University (1980-1985). She had previously been head of the Educational Resources Library at Bos- ton University (1978-1980), librarian at the Shady Hill School in Cambridge (1973-1978), and re- search librarian at the New England Aquarium in Boston.

Baughman holds a doctorate in library adminis- tration and an MLS from Simmons College, a mas- ter’s degree in history from Tulane University, and a bachelor’s degree in history from Washington State College. At Harvard she served as editor of several publications, including Educational Li- braries. She is a Board member and program com- mittee chair of the ACRL New England Chapter.

WILLIAM K. BLACK, head of personnel and plan- ning at the University of Louisville Libraries, has been appointed assistant director for administrative services and person- nel at Iowa State Uni- versity Library, Ames.

William K. Black

A graduate of the University of Redlands, Black received his MLS from the University of Michigan. His experi- ence includes that of as- sistant to the dean of university libraries at Louisville and service as assistant head of the Art, Music and Literature Division, Rockford Pub- lic Library.

His professional activities include serving as chair of the ALA Library Administration and Management Association’s Assistants to the Director Discussion Group, member of the ACRL Personnel Directors and Staff Development Officers Discussion Group, intern on the ACRL Academic Status Committee, and secretary of the Louisville Chapter of the Association of the AAUP.

BARBARA J. BROWN, associate director of pro- gram coordination for the Research Libraries Group, has been named head librarian at Wash- ington and Lee University, Lexington, Virginia. She replaces Maurice D. Leach Jr. ‚ who resigned to become director of a newly-created Friends of the Library organization at Washington and Lee.

Brown was head reference librarian at Washing- ton and Lee from 1971 to 1976, and at Cornell Uni- versity for seven years before that. She left W&L in 1976 to become assistant university librarian for general reader services at Princeton University. She held that post in 1980 when she accepted a position at the Research Libraries Group.

While at Washington and Lee she developed a bibliographical resources course and served as chairman of the board of publishers of W&L’s lit- erary journal, Shenandoah. In 1974 she was one of five librarians in the United States selected by the Council on Library Resources for a year’s study at the UCLA Library.

Brown holds an MLS from Columbia University and an undergraduate degree from Iowa State Uni- versity.

JOHN D. GABOURYhas been appointed university librarian and director of learning services at North- eastern Illinois University, effective August 1.

Gaboury served as di- rector of learning re- sources at Clayton Jun- ior College, Morrow, Georgia, before coming to Northeastern. He also served as director of the Learning Resources Center at North Shore Community College, Beverly, Massachusetts.

A native of New York City, Gabour earned his bachelor’s degree in broadcasting and edu- cational media from the University of Florida and his MLS from Florida State University. He also holds a doctorate in edu- cation from the University of Massachusetts.

LARRY A. KROAHhas been appointed director of libraries and media services at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, effective September 23.

Before his appoint- ment Kroah was en- rolled as a full-time Ph.D. student in the School of Library Sci- ence at the University of Michigan. Prior to be- ginning doctoral studies at Michigan, he was li- brary director at Wilmington College, Ohio, from 1977 to 1983, and director of li- braries at the American College of Switzerland from 1974 to 1977.

Kroah holds a master’s degree in medieval history from Ohio University and an MLS from the University of Illinois. He served as chair of the Dayton-Miami Valley Consortium’s Library Division Executive Board between 1980 and 1982, and from 1981 to 1983 he served as a board member of the Academic Library Association of Ohio, ACRL’s Ohio Chapter. He currently edits the monthly library automation bibliography for Library Hi Tech News and is a book reviewer for College & Research Libraries.

ELIZABETH SALZER, head librarian for the J. Henry Meyer Memorial Library at Stanford University since 1975, has been named director of the Michel Orradre Library at Santa Clara University.

Salzer is president of ACRL’s California Chapter, and has held the Olga Meyer and Alice Meyer Buck chair at Stanford since 1980. Earlier, Salzer worked from 1967 to 1975 in a variety of positions with the University Libraries of the State University of New York at Albany. At SUNY Salzer’s two most recent posts included serving as department head of Government Publications, then head of Reference Services.

Salzer earned a bachelor’s degree in English in 1966 from the College of Saint Rose in Albany, New York, and her MLS in 1967 from the University of Michigan.

MARILYN J. SHARROW, formerly chief librarian and professor of library and information science at the University of Toronto, assumed the position of university librarian at the University of Cali- fornia, Davis, on August 1.

Marilyn J. Sharrow

A 1967 graduate of the University of Michi- gan, Sharrow received her master’s degree from the same institution in 1969. She has been chief librarian at Toronto since 1982. Prior to that time she served as direc- tor of libraries at the University of Manitoba. She has also held positions at the University of Washington and Syracuse University and the Roseville (Michigan) and De- troit Public Libraries.

In 1982 Sharrow was named Winnipeg YMCA Woman of the Year in Management and received a British Council/University of Manitoba Research Grant in 1981. She has been president of the Canadian Association of Research Libraries and served on the board of the Canadian Institute of Historical Microreproduction and the National Library of Canada Resource Network Committee.

Her publication topics include information technology, library management, academic librarianship and related topics.

People in the news

ROSS W. ATKINSON, assistant university librarian for collection development at the University of Iowa, has received the 1985 Resources Section Blackwell/North America Scholarship Award for his article, “The Citation as Intertext: Toward a Theory of the Selection Process,” which appeared last year in Library Resources and Technical Services. The award is given each year by a committee of the ALA Resources and Technical Services Division’s Resources Section to the author of an outstanding publication in the field of acquisitions, collection development, or related areas of resources development.

ROBERT P. HOLLEY, assistant director for technical services at the University of Utah Marriott Library, has been named chair of the Standing Committee on Classification and Subject Cataloging, an international panel of librarians involved in providing subject access. The Committee is part of the Division of Bibliographic Control of IFLA, the International Federation of Library Associations. Holley has been a member of the Committee since 1981.

SUZINE HAR NICOLESCU, chief librarian at Medgar Evers College, New York, is now president of the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association for 1985-1986. Joseph Cheng, senior cata- loger at North Carolina Central University, has been elected APALA secretary for the same term.

ARLEEN N. SOMERVILLE, head of the University of Rochester Science and Engineering Libraries, was one of seven university staff to receive the first Distinguished Service Award for outstanding job performance and contributions to the University.

SHERRY TERZIAN, director of the Mental Health Information Service at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute, participated in the Conference of the World Federation for Mental Health, “'Mental Health in the Year 2,000,” which took place in Brighton, England, July 14-19, 1985. She conducted a seminar on her professional work program for outpatients at the Institute and its future implications and applicability to other professional situations.

GARY WIGGINS, head of the Chemistry Library at Indiana University, Bloomington, has won a competition sponsored by the American Society for Information Science. His Ph.D. dissertation, “Factors Which Influence the Choice of Document Delivery Mechanisms for Serials by Selected Scientific and Technical Special Libraries,” was selected for presentation at the ASIS Conference in Las Vegas in October.

Retirements

JAMIE GRAHAM, communications and public relations specialist at Washington University Libraries, Saint Louis, retired on September 30. Graham had joined the Libraries in 1969 as social sciences librarian and bibliographer specializing in urban studies.

ARTHUR C. KULP, facilities coordinator at the Cornell University Libraries, retired September 30 after 38 years of service. He had come to Cornell in .1947 as assistant circulation librarian.

Death

IRENE E. NYLAND, former catalog librarian at the University of California, Berkeley, died recently. She had retired from Berkeley in 1968.
