•The 1985-86 ARL Statistics volume (May1987) has been published by the Association of Research Libraries. Expenditures for the 118 ARL member libraries totaled over $1.4 billion during the past fiscal year, and the collections of member libraries contain over 321 million volumes, according to the 1985-86 report. Expenditures for the 106 university libraries in ARL topped $1 billion for the first time in 1986, with their collections numbering almost 275 million volumes (the remainder is accounted for by the Library of Congress and other non-academic research libraries). In this volume the figures for expenditures for library materials and for salaries and wages have been disaggregated in order to collect more comparable data. Libraries were asked to report figures for materials expenditures in four individual categories: monographs, current serials, other (e.g., AV materials, microp- forms), and miscellaneous (e.g., bibliographic utilities) . Salary and wage figures are reported for professionals, nonprofessionals, and student assistants. Copies of the ARL Statistics are available for $20 from the Association of Research Libraries, 1527 New Hampshire Ave., N.W., Washington, DC 20036.
