17-19—Media technology: “Converging Technologies—Coming Together to Reach Out” is the theme of the University of Wisconsin- Stout’s 24th annual Media Technology Conference to be held on campus. The keynote speaker will be Bill Hanson, multimedia marketing consultant for Apple Computer, Chicago. Over 25 individual sessions will be held, covering such topics as trends and concepts in communication technology, professional ethics, successful teleconferencing, and technical writing. A conference banquet will feature a presentation by James Bensen, dean of UW-Stout’s School of Industry and Technology. Fee: $65 before June 30. 4-8—Children’s literature: The 9th Symposium of the International Research Society for Children’s Literature will be on “Aspects and Issues in the History of Children’s Literature,” and will be held in Salamanca, Spain. Keynote and plenary papers will be presented by Segolene Le Men (France), Judith Plotz (U.S.A.), Antonio Basanta Reyes (Spain), and Jill Paton Walsh (England). 11-12, 14-15—User surveys: The Washington State Library, Library Planning and Development Division will present “How to Conduct a Library Use/Library User Survey” in Spokane, Washington (11-12), and Olympia, Washington (14-15). The presenter will be George D’Elia, director of the Carson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. Attendees will explore survey/questionnaire construction, interview techniques, and evaluation processes that develop useful interpretations of the data collected. 2-6—CD-ROM Expo: The third annual CD-ROM Expo will be held at the Sheraton Washington Hotel in Washington, D.C. Over 22 companies, including Apple, Hitachi, NEC, Philips and DuPont Optical, and Sony, have committed to exhibiting at the conference. Contact: Nancy Thayer at (800) 225-4698.
4- 6, 25-27—Remodeling: The Washington State Library, Library Planning and Development Division is sponsoring a workshop called “Building Libraries: Remodeling and Conversion” in Bellevue, Washington (4-6), and Spokane, Washington (25-27). HBW Associates of Dallas, Texas, will lead the seminar, focusing on cost profiles and timelines of representative projects. Contact: See listing for June 14-16.
5- 7—Music librarianship: A symposium titled “Music Librarianship in America” will be held at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Aiming to stimulate music librarians to reflect on the larger aspects of their calling, distinguished representatives from the fields of musicology, ethnomusicology, history, publishing, arts administration, and others, will explore the role of music librarians as custodians of cultural history. Scheduled participants include Richard Crawford, Sidney Verba, Richard French, Charles Hamm, H. Colin Slim, Leo Balk, Gunther Schuller, Susan Sommer, and Dena Epstein. Three concerts are planned: an evening of black gospel music, a performance by the Boston Camerata, and an organ recital by Ewald Kooiman. 22-25—Medical libraries: The Annual Conference of the South Central Regional Group of the Medical Library Association will be held at the Marriott Hotel in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The theme is the “89 Run for Excellence” which reflects the Oklahoma Land Run Centennial and the pursuit of excellence in education, research, and communication.
