Purdue University has announced the ap- pointment of Joseph M. Dagnese as Director, Libraries and Audio Visual Center, effective January 10. He comes to Purdue from the Massachusetts Insti- tute of Technology, where he has been As- sistant Director of Li- braries for Technical Services since 1966.

His educational background includes a bachelor’s degree in English from Boston College, and a mas- ter’s degree in English from Catholic University. Further work at Catholic University earned him the M.S.L.S. degree in 1952. On this foundation he has built a record which in- cludes a wide range of professional activities and experience.

Joseph M. Dagnese

Mr. Dagnese joined the MIT libraries in 1960 as head of the acquisitions department. This was followed by the dual responsibility of science librarian and head of the circulation department.

Other libraries have benefited from his professional insights. During 1966 and 1967, Mr. Dagnese was library consultant to the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, India, on a Ford Foundation-sponsored program. A six-week visit there in 1966 was followed by a one-year residence in 1967. He is presently an adviser to the program.

In 1970 Mr. Dagnese was consultant for the Ford Foundation at Delhi University Library. Mr. Dagnese has been active in the Special Libraries Association, both in the Boston Chapter and nationally. Other memberships include the American Library Association and National Microfilm Association.

Royce Butler, a native Canadian, has returned to Canada to become Director of Libraries and Professor of Bibliography at the University of Manitoba replacing Mr. David Wilder. Butler brings to Manitoba a wide range of experience gained in American and Canadian libraries.

His background includes positions as head of technical services at the University of Denver, 1962-1965, and associate director of libraries at York University in Toronto during 1965 and 1966 where he played a major role in developing the preliminary program for their new central library which opened in the fall of 1971. Before accepting the directorship at Manitoba, Mr. Butler served as university librarian and later Dean of the Library at Oakland University, Rochester, Michigan from 1966 through 1971.

The five years spent at Oakland University added greatly to the experience that he had already gained. He again wrote a building program for a main library and also helped to gain full faculty rank and status for his staff.

His contributions to the profession have been as varied as those he has made to his employers. He was founding editor of the Colorado Academic Library in 1963, he has published in various library journals, and has been an active participant and leader in state as well as the American and Canadian library associations.

His credentials as a leader in academic librarianship should stand him in good stead at the University of Manitoba.
