Publicizing BI
The ACRL Bibliographic Instruction Liaison Project has developed two promotional aids to assist in publicizing the concept of bibliographic instruction as an integral library service.
The first is a display which can be used in exhibit booths at meetings and conferences. It was exhibited at the Modern Languages Association meeting recently by Special Sessions speaker Bill Miller, and ACRL members have looked it over at the ALA Midwinter Meeting in San Antonio. The exhibit comes in both floor and table model sizes, folds to fit the appropriate carrying bagsize, and is now available to any interested librarian who has the opportunity to attend meetings and wants to help promote the project and the concept.
Accompanying the display are press kits, developed to publicize the integration of libraries into higher education, and the special instructional service role that libraries can provide. The kits are de- (continued on p. 4)
Although the press kits were originally designed for distribution to the offices of professional associations in higher education, they can also be used easily by BI librarians who are involved with contacting the faculty and teaching departments on their own campuses or who can distribute them to campus administrators.
ACRL members are encouraged to assist the project either by volunteering to take the exhibit to conferences with them or by submitting material for inclusion in the packets.
A continuing effort has been made to place librarians on the conference programs of other professional associations. Although the proposal submitted to the American Association of Higher Education was rejected, Mary Reichel has agreed to submit a proposal for the 1983 American Political Science Association Conference in Chicago entitled “The Impact of Computerized Library Data Bases on Teaching Political Science.” Ray McGinnis will propose a presentation for the 1983 American Psychological Association meetings in Anaheim. And the BI Liaison Project Officer is busy coordinating a proposal involving both Canadian and American librarians that will be submitted for the American Council on Education’s October 1983 meeting in Toronto.
A list of national conference dates is available from the LOEX Clearinghouse, Eastern Michigan University, Ypsilanti, MI 48197. The list includes details on possibilities for booth rental. Interested librarians are urged to contact our office with ideas. — Carolyn Kirkendall, Director, LOEX Clearinghouse, and ACRL BI Liaison Project Officer, Eastern Michigan University, Ypsilanti, Michigan.
