19- Fundraising:“Grants, Friends, and Book Sales: Lobbying and Fund-Raising Options for Librarians,” will be the theme of St. John’s University’s congress for librarians to be held in Bent Hall on the Queens campus of the university. 6-7—Staff development:The University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Library and Information Studies Continuing Education Services is offering a staff development conference for library assistants, support staff, and paraprofessionals in all types of positions and libraries. 11-14—Library issues:A conference on major issues facing libraries for the new decade, sponsored by the Florida State University School of Library and Information Studies, will be held at the Florida State Conference Center in Tallahassee, Florida. The theme of the Conference is “Issues for the Next Decade: Preservation, the Serials Dilemma, the Role and Effectiveness of the Public Library, and the Legislative Agenda.” The fee for the conference is $200, which includes two dinners, two luncheons, three continental breakfasts, two receptions, coffee breaks, and transportation from the Tallahassee Hilton to the Florida State Conference Center throughout the conference. Rooms are available at the Hilton at the reduced rate of $49, single; $60, double. 2-5—Serials:The 13th Annual Conference and AGM of the United Kingdom Serials Group will be held at Boldrewood Conference Centre, University of Southampton. 16-19—Catholic libraries:The 69th annual convention of the Catholic Library Association will take place in Toronto, Canada. 4-6—International and comparative librarianship:A seminar on International and Comparative Librarianship will be offered in the spring of 1990 at the School of Library and Information Science, University of South Florida, in Tampa. The seminar will be conducted by John A. McCrossan, professor. Students may register for 3 hours credit or they may audit the seminar. All will attend Session I in Tampa. Those registered for credit must also attend a second session in June at which they will present their seminar research papers. 11-12—User instruction:The LOEX Clearinghouse for Library Instruction, located in the Eastern Michigan University Library will sponsor the 18th National LOEX Library Instruction Conference in Ypsilanti, Michigan. The title of the Conference is, “Judging the Validity of Information Sources: Teaching Critical Analysis in BI.” The program will consist of practical working sessions, formal papers, and brief instructional presentations. Registration will be $125 (approximately) by mail only. Attendance is limited to 125. 6-18—Administration:The College of Library and Information Services, University of Maryland, is planning the 24th annual Library Administrators Development Program, to be held at the University of Maryland’s Donaldson Brown Center, Port Deposit, Maryland. Seminar sessions will concentrate on the principal administrative issues which senior managers encounter. Strategic planning and management by objectives, leadership, employee motivation, individual and group decision making, performance appraisal, conflict management, financial planning and analysis, marketing, and managing change are among the issues considered in lecture, case analysis, group discussion, and seminar.
