Ann-Christe Galloway

Sandra Rios Balderrama,former director of ALA’s Office for Diversity and former president of REFORMA, has been selected as REFORMA’s 2003 Arnulfo D. Trejo Li- brarian of the Year. Balderrama’s professional career in librarianship has been closely associated with issues of diversity and the recruitment and retention of librarians of color. As a junior librar- ian at Berkeley Public Li- brary, she was instrumen- tal in the creation of the Multiethnic Committee. She then became the co- ordinator of Recruitment, Staff Development and Retention for the Oakland Public Library (1995-97). As the first librarian to hold the posi- tion of director for ALA’s Office for Diversity (1998-2002), Balderrama was aggressively in- volved in determining the path and successful fu- ture of the ALA Spectrum Scholars Program. When Balderrama left this position, the ALA Coun- cil passed a resolution on June 19,2002, honoring her work.

Appointments

Carolyn Argentatihas been appointed associate vice provost and the Donald E. Moreland deputy director of libraries at North Carolina State University. She will focus on leadership and coordination of the internal work of the libraries and will stand in for and serve as a proxy for the vice provost and director at campus, library, and development events.

Nancy Buschhas been named associate dean for the University Libraries at the University of Ne- braska-Lincoln. Her academic teaching experience includes an appointment as visiting faculty for the School of Library and Information Management at Emporia State University (1990-98 and 2000). She also served as adjunct faculty for the Teacher’s College at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (1995-97) and the School of Information and Library Studies at the University of Michigan (1986-88). Busch previously served as deputy di- rector of the Nebraska Library Commission. Busch’s articles have appeared in Library Admin- istration & Management, Wilson Library Bulletin, and the Nebraska Library Association Quarterly. She has also authored many reports for the Ne- braska Library Commission.

Lisabeth Chabothas been named college li- brarian at Ithaca College. She was previously col- lege librarian at Mary Baldwin College in Virginia. While in Virginia, Chabot served a term as presi- dent of the Virginia Library Association; she is the immediate past president of the Virginia In- dependent College and University Library Asso- ciation; and she served on the Virginia LSTA Ad- visory Council and the State Council for Higher Education in Virginia Library Advisory Council. As an ACRL member Chabot has been active with the College Library Section (CLS), most recently serving on the CLS executive committee and the CLS standards committee

Linda Matthewshas been named vice provost and director of libraries at Emory University. Matthews has been direc- tor of the Special Collec- tions and Archives Divi- sion in the Robert W. Woodruff Library at Emory since 1982. She joined Emory as a refer- ence archivist in 1972.

Catherine Murray-Rusthas been named dean of libraries at Colorado State University-Ft. Collins. She was previously the associate university librarian for Public Services and Innovative Technology at Oregon State University in Corvallis, and was the se- nior administrator for sev- eral departments, includ- ing reference, access ser- vices, library technology, university archives and records, special collec- tions, and the Guin Library. Prior to her tenure at Oregon State, she served for 21 years in reference services and li- brary administration at Cornell University. She is active in ACRL, LAMA, and LITA.

Catherine Murray-Rust

Verne W. Newtonhas been named director of the James A. Cannavino Library at Marist College. Newton was previously director of the nearby Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library in Hyde Park, New York. He has published two books on Roosevelt-era history and wrote and produced the PBS feature documentary Harry Hopkins: At FDR’s Side.

Janice Simmons-Welburnhas been named associate dean of the University of Arizona Li- braries.

Ann St Clairhas been appointed library direc- tor of Montana Tech Library at the University of Montana.

Gloriana St. Clair,Carnegie Mellon Univer- sity librarian since April 1998, has been named dean of university libraries at Carnegie Mellon University. Carnegie Mellon University Presi- dent Jared Cohon said that the new title “more aptly reflects the importance of the libraries in the university’s academic life.” St. Clair edited College & Research Libraries from 1990 to 1996. She then became the managing editor of Journal of Academic Librarianship. When Elsevier bought that journal, St. Clair, Sue Martin, Charles Lowry and many board members founded a new journal, por- tal: Libraries and the Academy, which is published electronically in “Muse.” She has led or participated in various leadership activities in the field of library science and was chair of ALA’S Library Research Roundtable and the ACRL Excellence in Academic Libraries Award Committee. She is a member of the Digital Library Federation, and past chair of the Pennsylvania Academic Library Consortia] Initiative, among many other organi- zations and committees.

J. Daniel Vann HI,retired dean of library ser- vices at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, has been appointed interim director of the Will- iam Smith Morton Library and adjunct professor of bibliography at Union Theological Seminary and Presbyterian School of Christian Education. He was previously a bibliog- rapher at the Newberry Library and librarian/di- rector at Charleston Southern University, Keuka College, Staten Island Community College of CUNY, the Lockwood Library at SUNY-Buffalo, and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Vann has been chair of ACRL’s Community and Junior College Librar- ies Section and its membership and constitu- tion and bylaws committees as well as a mem- ber of ACRL’s Board of Directors; CHOICE editorial board, the Academic/Research Li- brarian of the Year Committee, and the Intel- lectual Freedom Committee. He was a Council on Library Resources intern and has served on ALA and LAMA panels.

J. Daniel Vann III

William D. Walkerhas been named director of libraries at the University of Miami (UM). Walker, who oversaw the New York Public Li- brary, previously served as director of the Medical Library Center of New York and as the head of information services at the University of Illinois Medical Center’s Library of the Health Sciences. At UM, Walker will over- see a library system anchored by the newly refurbished $17.5 million Otto G. Richter Library, which houses 1.8 million of the university’s volumes.

Tiffeni J. Fontnohas been appointed business and management librarian at Case Western Reserve University.

Stephen Greenberghas been named coordinator of public services for the History of Medicine Division at the National Library of Medicine.

Judith Haydelhas joined the reference department of the Dupré Library at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.

Emily Holmesis now assistant director for preservation reformatting and digitization in the preservation division of the Columbia University Libraries.

Dena Huttohas been promoted to director of reference and instruction in the Reed College Library.

Juliet Kericohas been appointed literature and humanities librarian at Indiana State University.

Jean Laponceis now Western European and Philosophy librarian in the Humanities and History Division at Columbia University Libraries.

MinTianhas been appointed Chinese studies librarian at the University of Iowa Libraries.

Maurice Yorkhas joined the General Li- braries of Emory University as team leader for circulation and reserves.

Retirements

Rosemary E. Buhr,director of the Learning Resources Center at the Logan College of Chiro- practic in Chesterfield, Missouri, has retired after 20 years of service. Previously she was librarian at Barnes Hospital School of Nursing for 11 years.

Joan Gotwals,vice provost and director of Emoiy University Librar- ies, has retired after 15 years of service. She has lead the library to national recognition for its major research collections, invit- ing physical facilities, and innovations in digital ser- vices. Prior to joining Emoiy, Gotwals spent 26 years in the library system of the University of Pennsylvania, where she became deputy director of libraries in 1981.

Nancy Koller,bibliographer of social sciences and humanities and distinguished librarian at the University of California-Riverside (UCR), has retired. She was an active member in many library associations, including ALA, California Librarians Association, and California Association of Academic Libraries. She has published articles in Books at UCR and taught at Riverside Community College, Chapman Col- lege, and UCR in the ar- eas of library organiza- tions and functions, li- brary research methodol- ogy and strategies, and bibliographic instruction.

Nancy Koller

Chang C. Leehas retired after 20 years of service at the University of Central Florida (UCF) Library. He began his library career in 1969 and has worked at various institutions, including Florida A&M University and the Behrend College, Pennsylvania State University-Erie. After teaching library science and education at the Na- tional Chengchi Univer- sity of Taiwan for a year, Lee came to UCF as the head of circulation in 1983 and became the spe- cial collections librarian in 1986. Lee has also been a professor of Chinese language and civilization at UCF since 1985. He has published 55 papers relating to education, Chi- nese language and culture, library science and ar- chives; made 28 presentations and consultations; and served as a consultant for several college li- braries in Taiwan. He has been one of the execu- tive editors of the Journal of Educational Media and Libraty Sciences since 1985. Lee has been a member of the Florida Library Association and ALA and served as the president of the Chinese American Library Association (an affiliate organi- zation of ALA) from 1988 to 1989.

Bob Sickles,reference/collections librarian in the area of agriculture/life sciences at Iowa State University, has retired after 35 years of service.

Deaths

Bernard McTigue,57, head of special collections at the North Carolina State University (NCSU) Libraries, has died. Before joining the NCSU Libraries in 1999, McTigue served as director of the Division of Special Collections and University Archives at the University of Oregon and as chair of the Depart- ment of Special Collec- tions at the University of Florida’s Smathers Librar- ies. From 1974 to 1990 he worked at the New York Public Library, first as curator of the Arents Collections, then as curator of the collection and keeper of rare books. McTigue also worked in various editorial capacities for a number of jour- nals, including the Bulletin of Bibliography, Ameri- can Book Collector, Bulletin du Bibliophile, and Biblio, and authored several books. He was active professionally, holding membership in several or- ganizations, including ACRL’s Rare Books and Manuscripts Section.

Elizabeth Ellen Winkelmann Morrissett,82, has died. Morrissett worked as the DuPont organic chemistry department librarian (1944-45), as science and technical librarian at Antioch College (1945-48), as a librarian at the University of California-Berkeley (1948-50), as librarian at the University of Colorado (1969-7®, as librarian at Auraria Library in Denver (1976-80), as head librarian at Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology in Butte (1980-86), as library director at Alaska Pacific University-Anchorage (1986-90), and as a librarian at Alaska State Library in Juneau from (1990-91). She was a member of ALA, Colorado Library Association, Mountain Plains Ubrary Association, and the International Federation of Library Associations.
