Jane Carlin,head librarian at the University of Cincinnati College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning, has been elected to the Executive Board of the Art Libraries Society as the Midwestern representative. Her two-year term begins in April.
Cheryl LaGuardia,coordinator of the Electronic Teaching Center in the Harvard College Library, has received the 1996 School of Information Science and Policy Distinguished Alumni Award from the State University of New York at Albany’s Nelson A. Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy. LaGuardia earned her MLS from SUNY/Albany in 1978.
James G. Neal,Sheridan director of the Milton S. Eisenhower Library at Johns Hopkins University, has been elected vice-president/president-elect of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). He will serve one year as vicepresident, then assume the presidency in October 1997. Elected to three-year terms on the ARL Board of Directors were: Shirley K. Baker, vice-chancellor of information technology and dean of University Libraries at Washington University; Kenneth Frazier, director of the University of Wisconsin-Madison General Library System; and William Gray Potter, director of libraries at the University of Georgia.
Appointments
Jonathan A. Birnbaumhas been appointed director of library services at Lakeland Community College in Mentor, Ohio.
Kathy A. Kaldenberghas been named head librarian at Kaskaskia College in Centralia, Illinois. Most recently Kaldenberg served as regional librarian for Troy State University’s Western Region at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico. She has also worked for the City of Mountain View Public Library in Mountain View, California, and Burlington County Library in Mount Holly, New Jersey.
Naomi C. Broering
Naomi C. Broeringhas been appointed executive director of the Houston Academy of Medicine’s Texas Medical Center Library. Broering has served since 1978 as Medical Center librarian of the Dahlgren Memorial Library at Georgetown University Medical Center. She also served as director of the Biomedical Information Resources Center at Georgetown since 1985. Current president of the Medical Library Association (MLA), Broering is also a fellow of the American Medical Informatics Association, and a distinguished member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals. She has received many awards, including MLA’s 1986 Frank Bradway Rogers Information Advancement Award for developing the Library Information System and the miniMEDLINE system, and the Special Library Association’s 1987 Professional Award for her work on IAIMS.
Victoria Montavon
Victoria Montavonhas been named associate provost for libraries and information services at Wright State University. She joins Wright State from Saint Joseph’s University where she served as university librarian. Her previous positions include associate director of library services at Rider University and head librarian at Lindenwood College. A current member of the ACRL Board of Directors, Montavon previously served as president of the PALINET Board of Trustees.
Charles W. Triche IIIhas been appointed director of the Edith Garland Dupre Library at the University of Southwestern Louisiana (USL). Triche has been employed by USL Libraries in various capacities for more than 20 years. He has been associate director since 1993.
Grace Agnewis now assistant director for systems at the Georgia Tech Library & Information Center.
Jill Bakeris now a reference librarian and information consultant for aerospace engineering and materials science and engineering at Georgia Tech Library & Information Center.

Retirements
Gene Carvalho,East Asian librarian at the University of Kansas (KU), retired in February.
He had held that position since 1971. Before that Carvalho served as assistant librarian at Castleton State College in Vermont and government documents librarian at Brandeis University. Professionally active, he served on the Association of Asian Studies Committee on East Asian Libraries, on the East Asian Studies Program Executive Committee, and as a member of the Japan Foundation. From May 1991 to January 1994 Carvalho took a leave from KU to establish, from the ground up, a new library facility in Akita, Japan, for Minnesota State University.
Ann de Klerk
Ann de Klerkwill retire as director of library and information services at Bucknell University as of May 31. She will have directed the Bertrand Library, including instructional media services, for 16 years. From 1965 to 1981 she held various positions at Carnegie Mellon University, including head of the Engineering and Science Library and associate director of university libraries, de Klerk has been active in ACRL, the American Society for Information Services, the Coalition for Networked Information, and the Pennsylvania Library Association. She is a founding member of the Pennsylvania Academic Libraries Connection Initiative, and participated in PRLC and PALINET committees, serving on PALINET’s Board of Trustees. From 1991 to 1996 she represented PALINET as an OCLC Users’ Council delegate.
Norman Jungretired in January after 20 years as the director of the library at the State University of New York (SUNY) College at Old
Westbury. Before that Jung worked for ten years at SUNY-Stony Brook first as head of circulation then as head of reference. He also worked for three years in the Graduate Reference Department at Cornell University.
Donald S. Keener,associate director for administration at the North Carolina State University (NCSU) Libraries since 1990, retired in January after 35 years of service. Keener began his career at NCSU in 1962 as head of the Hill Library’s Circulation Department. In 1971 he was promoted to assistant director for general services. During his years there, he led both the planning and implementing of two nine-story bookstack additions to the libraries.
Deaths
Judy Atkinson, a half-time reference librarian at the University of British Columbia’s Sedgewick Library, died in September at the age of 52. Atkinson began her career as an assistant in the Circulation Division in 1967, then became assistant circulation librarian in 1971. Following a year of exchange work as a reference librarian at the University of New South Wales, she became assistant head of Sedgewick Library in 1973. Between 1982 and the start of her disability leave in 1994, Atkinson worked as a half-time reference librarian in Sedgewick.
Sheila Hertstein, a member of the City College of New York (CUNY) Library Department for 32 years, died in August after a year-long illness. She was 53. Beginning her career with CUNY in 1964, Hertstein worked in the Social Science Reading Room. She later headed the Reference Division, then served as collection development coordinator, acting chief of the Reference Division, and bibliographer for the Reference Collection and for history, Jewish studies, and women’s studies. She was very active in university affairs, serving on several committees and boards.

Karl H. Proehl,former senior assistant librarian and head of the Maps Collection at Penn State University, died in November. Before joining Penn State in 1977, Proehl served as maps librarian at the State University of New York. Professionally active, Proehl served as chair of the Special Libraries Association’s Geography and Map Division and associate editor of its Bulletin; chair of the North American Cartographic Information Society’s Publications Committee and editor of its newsletter, Map Gap; and as a member of the American Geographical Society, the Association of American Geographers, and the Pennsylvania Library Association.
W. David Rozkuszka,a former librarian at Stanford University, died in January at the age of 53. The cause was AIDS-related lymphoma. Rozkuszka joined Stanford in 1967 and served there as foreign documents librarian, head of the Jonsson Library of Government Documents, and international documents librarian and African and Middle Eastern bibliographer. He retired in 1994. Colleague Ann Latta recalled, “David’s legacy to Stanford was building one of the finest foreign documents collections in the U.S.” Rozkuszka was a member of ACRL’s Western European Studies Section and the Seminar on Acquisition of Latin American Materials. An annual scholarship for library science students has been set up in his name by ALA’s Government Documents Round Table.
Eileen Thornton
Eileen Thornton,librarian of Oberlin College from 1956 to 1971, died in January at the age of 87. A graduate of the University of Minnesota in 1931, Thornton earned her MLS from the University of Chicago in 1945. Before joining Oberlin, she served as college librarian at the University of Chicago (1942–45) and at Vassar College (1945–56). A life member of ALA, she served on ALA Council and was president of ACRL (1957–58) and LAMA (1967–68). She received a distinguished service award from ACRL in 1989. ■
