Ann-Christe Young

Valerie Darst,director of library services at Moberly Area Community College (MACC), has been elected chair of the MOBIUS Li- brary Consortium, a statewide organization that provides library information services in Missouri academic libraries by employing an automated library common platform system enabling faculty and students to access the collections of academic libraries across the state and to place borrowing requests online. Darst has been active in the MOBIUS organi- zation since its creation in 1997, and she has been with the MACC library for 18 years.

Arthur Friedman,of the Nassau Commu- nity College Library, was selected as the 2002 vice president of the Long Island Library Re- sources Council Board of Trustees.

Alisa Rata,cataloger in the William and Gayle Cook Music Library at Indiana University (IU), has received an award from the Margaret I. Rufsvold Graduate Fellowship Fund. The fel- lowship awards $2,000 each year to a stu- dent who shows exceptional promise as a library/information professional. Rata is pur- suing a dual MLS/MA Musicology degree at IU with a specialization in music librarianship.

John V. Richardson Jr.

John V. Richardson Jr.,professor in the Department of Informa- tion Studies in the Graduate School of Education and Infor- mation Studies at UCLA, will be a presi- dential scholar of vir- tual reference services at Library Systems and Services L.L.C. in Germantown, Mary- land, during his sabbatical leave. Richardson will be working on aspects of virtual question answering, notably the measurement and evaluation of virtual question answering, benchmark data, and statistical profiles. He will continue editing Library Quarterly.

Appointments

Nancy Cotthas been appointed the Carl and Lily Pforzheimer Foundation director of the Schlesinger Library at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study.

Daniel Greensteinhas accepted the position of university librarian and executive director of the California Digital Library; he is expected to begin May 2002. Greenstein is currently director of the Digital Library Federation in Washington, D.C., a position he has held since 1999. His academic career has included appointments in modern history at Glasgow University, director of the Glasgow University Arts Faculty Computing Facility, and founding director of the Arts and Humanities Data Service of the United Kingdom, where he led the strategic and operational development of a digital information service to support arts and humanities research and teaching at higher education institutions in the United Kingdom. Building on this success, Greenstein was named founding codirector of the UK Resource Discovery Network in 1998.

Susan Herringhas been appointed director of the School of Library and Information Science’s doctoral program in information science at Indiana University.

Charles R. Hildrethhas been named director of the doctoral program at the Palmer School of Library and Information Science, based at the C. W. Post Campus of Long Island University in Brookville, New York. The New York State-chartered program—the only doctoral program in information studies in the New York metropolitan area—prepares stu- dents for leadership positions in research, teaching, and business. Prior to being named to this position, Hildreth had been associate professor in the Palmer School since 1998. He also served as assistant professor at the School of Library and Information Studies at the Uni- versity of Oklahoma and as a visiting lecturer at the University of Washington Graduate School of Library and Information Science. He had served in a similar capacity at the Gradu- ate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign, and the School of Library Science at Kent State University. Hildreth is also the owner and chief consulting scientist for READ, a firm that provides consulting services for li- brary operations and information systems.

Joan Roca

Joan Rocahas been appointed dean of li- brary services at Minnesota State University (MSU), Mankato, effective June 2002. Roca has served as interim dean since August 2000. He most recently held the position of tenured professor/co- ordinator of library sys- tems at the MSU library. As automation librarian with MSUS/PALS (1982- 94), he contributed to the development of the internationally recognized PALS integrated library system. He is an active member of ACRE, the American Society for Information Science and Technology, and a member and past chair of the Academic Research Libraries Division of the Minnesota Library Association. Roca also represents the MINITEX regional network at the OCLC Members Council.

Kate Beckerhas been appointed conservation technician at Harvard College Library’s Cabot Science Library.

Dorothea Burnshas been named Helen H. Glaser conservator at Harvard’s Weissman Preservation Center.

Amanda Cainhas been appointed information literacy/humanities reference librarian at West Chester University in West Chester, Pennsylvania.

Douglas Campbellis now cataloger in the Spanish/Portuguese Division of Harvard College Library.

Kathryn Coylehas been named special materials cataloging librarian at West Chester University in West Chester, Pennsylvania.

Emalee Craftis now systems librarian at the University of Washington Libraries in Seattle.

Luc Declerckhas been named associate university librarian of technology and technical services at the University of California, San Diego.

Michael Doylenhas been appointed archivist in Marquette University’s Department of Special Collections and University Archives.

Cristina Favrettois now director of special collections and university archives at San Diego State University.

Gregory D. Goessmanis now the sci- ence/reference librarian at the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s university library.

Brian Keoughis now head of the M. E. Grenander Department of Special Collections and Archives at the University at Albany, SUNY.

Clayton Kirkinghas been named chief of art information resources at the Humanities and Social Sciences Library of the Research Libraries at the New York Public Library.

Suzanne Kriegsmanhas been appointed Library Digital Initiative Grant Projects manager at Harvard University Library.

Jean Lenvilleis now head of serials records in the Widener Library at the Harvard College Library.

Richard Lopezhas been appointed assistant head of stacks division in Widener Library at the Harvard College Library.

Mary Mayer-Hennellyis the new associate dean of learning resources at Tidewater Community College in Virginia.

Joseph P. Mikawill serve as interim director of the Library and Information Science Program at Wayne State University.

Jindra Milleris now technical services librarian in the Cabot Science Library at the Harvard College Library.

Michelle Millethas been hired as the reference librarian and outreach coordinator for the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Library at the University of Montana in Missoula.

Humberto Oliveirahas been appointed preservation assistant in the Tozzer Library at the Harvard College Library.

Debbie Paulsonis now director of public services at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina.

Timothy Pyatthas been named university archivist at Duke University.

Steven Rielis now preservation cataloger and projects managers at the Weissman Preservation Center in the Harvard University Library.

Andrea Schulmanis the collection development librarian at the Baker Library in the Harvard Business School.

Barbara Tarantohas been named director of the Digital Library Program at the New York Public Library.

Kimberley Vassiliadishas joined the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Library as the instructional projects librarian.

Jennifer Wardis now systems librarian at the University of Washington Libraries in Seattle.

Nancy Westrickhas been named Web coordinator for the General Libraries of Emory University.

Retirements

Margaret Howell,head of special collections at the University of Missouri-Columbia’s (UMC) Ellis Libraiy, has retired after 27 years of service in that position. Under her direction, the special collections have grown to include such rarities as the Comic Art Collection and the Weinberg Journalists in Fiction Collection. Howell was responsible for the recent Directory of Special Collections at the University of Missouri-Columbia Libraries, published at UMC.

Darrell L. Jenkins,head of the social sciences division of Morris Library at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC), has retired after 24 years of service. Prior to joining the SIUC faculty, Jenkins was a librarian at New Mexico State University for five years. He has been actively involved in committee work on the university campus as well as the Illinois Library and ALA, most recently serving as chair of ACRL’s Research Discussion Group. He was also involved with ACRL’s EBSS and various committees within LAMA.

Jenkins served on the OCLC Users Council (1988-91) and served on the Policy Council of the Illinois Library Computer System Organization (1984-91). In 2000, Jenkins received the Outstanding Library Affairs Faculty Award.

Deaths

Tom Owens,director of implementation at Endeavor Information Systems, has died. He had more than 30 years of library industry experience, which he gained at Ohio State University, University of Arizona, Geac Computers, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Owens first joined Endeavor in 1996 as the manager of implementation and data migration. He served as director of customer services at Ovid Technologies in 1999 before returning to Endeavor.

Elizabeth W. Stone,83, dean emerita of Catholic University’s School of Library and Information Science, has died. Stone was dean of the school from 1981 to 1983, having joined the faculty in 1961. She was also librarian and archivist at the National Presbyterian Church. Her awards include the Joseph W. Lippincott Award for Notable Achievement in Librarianship, the Presidential Medal for Distinguished Service to Catholic University, and the CUA Alumni Achievement Award for library science. Stone had authored several publications and served as president of the District of Columbia Library Association, president of the Association of American Library Schools, and president of ALA (1981, 1982). ■
