• The University of Toledo announces the publication of the Ohio Academic Library Innovation‚ A Directory‚ prepared by Dulce DiDio McLean, G. Robert McLean, and Alice Weaver of the university libraries faculty. It is the third publication in the university’s Tower Series.

The directory publicizes innovative activities from academic libraries surveyed within the state of Ohio. The 76-page volume includes 101 reports listed under the name of the reporting institution. A general introduction analyzes the survey, and a subject index facilitates the identification of projects in special areas of interest. Individual entries provide name of institution, resource personnel, source of funding, name of innovative activity, objectives, and description.

Copies of the directory are available at $3 from the authors.

• An examination of library instruction programs at a variety of universities across the country is presented in a new ARL Management Supplement, Library Use Instruction in Academic and Research Libraries.

The emphasis is on program implementation, administrative issues, cooperative efforts, and unmet needs, with an in-depth look at current developments and uses of instruction. The supplement is based on information and documentation obtained from a survey of the 105 Association of Research Libraries members and 30 additional libraries.

Based on the survey data, library instruction activities fall into three broad categories: library orientation, general bibliographic instruction, and specialized instruction related to subject or discipline, reference tools, or specific user needs. Examples of each of these types of instruction are described based on documentation supplied by surveyed libraries. A select listing of main information sources of library instruction is also provided.

• The Centre for Research on User Studies (CRUS) at the University of Sheffield, England, has recently published a wide-ranging review of research on user studies. Edited by Geoffrey Ford, it is titled User Studies: An Introductory Guide and Select Bibliography.

Taking a broad definition of information users, Ford has correlated the findings of a wide range of user studies into a generalized description of current knowledge of user behavior and of how to approach the study of users. The field of user studies is not confined here to surveys of library borrowers but includes a host of other questions concerned with in-library use of material, what use is actually made of borrowed material, and attitudes towards the purchase of books and journals.

The motivation for seeking information is seen as a major influence upon the user’s behavior. The types of user (and nonuser) cover the range from academics and researchers to the general public and schoolchildren and include users of all kinds of information systems.

The relevance of these studies to the design and improvement of information systems is emphasized. This review is based upon the intensive reading of available literature done by the staff of the Centre during the first year of the Centre’s program, and it contains a select bibliography of the most illustrative work of the previous decade.

CRUS also publishes a newsletter, reporting its own research findings and providing a forum for other research workers to disseminate and discuss their work.

• Library Automation: A View from Ontario by William Ready and Tom Dryhan, Occasional Paper no. 14 of the Dalhousie University Libraries and Dalhousie University School of Library Services, is now available for $2.50 from Norman Horrocks, School of Library Service, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, B3H 4H8, Canada. Of particular interest is its discussion of such support systems as DOBIS (Dortmunder Bibliothekssystem) and CATSS (Catalogue Support System).

• Mimi Stein, interviewer for the Regional Oral History Office, is one of the authors of a recent publication of the Bay Area Reference Center of the San Francisco Public Library. Entitled Collecting Local History‚ it contains the proceedings of a BARC workshop of that name held on March 16 and 17, 1977, at the San Leandro Community Library Center. The workshop and its proceedings provide information to Northern California librarians about the processes involved in collecting local history and oral history, a growing interest among libraries.

The first day’s papers focus on how-to-do-it information. Papers from the second day concentrate in two areas: local history resources in California; a bibliography and union list of library holdings and oral history, including a discussion of the creating, processing, and cataloging of oral history collections.

Appendix material includes illustrations of catalog entries and cards and bibliographies on local history, oral history, and the care and preservation of photographs.

• The year-long process of updating the first edition of the Oklahoma Union List of Serials (OKULS) has been completed, according to Norman L. Nelson, supervising editor for the project. The second edition is now available in a 5-volume, 3,900-page computer printout or in microfiche format.

Produced at the Oklahoma State University Library, the second edition contains an alphabetical listing of more than 32,000 titles of journals, newspapers, annuals, and other serial publications held by 23 participating academic, public, and special libraries in Oklahoma.

Because of the increase in the number of titles listed and the nominal cost of the microfiche copy, it is anticipated that the second edition may prove to be a more valuable and heavily used interlibrary loan reference tool than was the 3,500-page first edition. The first edition, completed in January 1975, was purchased and used extensively by libraries throughout the United States as well as in Oklahoma.

• The Southwestern Library Association (SWLA) announces the publication of THE Learner’s Advisory Workshop Series. The five manuals detail a step-by-step method to produce workshops that cover all aspects of implementing and operating learner advisory services.

The series, written by workshop designers at Tulsa City-County Library and edited by the SWLA Continuing Education for Library Staffs (CELS) Project, includes five training manuals: (1) Understanding the Adult Learner, (2) Interviewing, (3) Decision Making, (4) Creative Use of Library Resources, (5) Community Resources. An overview by Peggy O’Donnell, CELS project director, accompanies the series.

The manuals may be ordered from the SWLA Office, 11300 North Central Expressway, Suite 321, Dallas TX 75243. The set of five manuals costs $16. Single manuals cost $4 each.

• Looking for ideas? News Notes of California Libraries, vol. 71, no. 2, 1976, describes 140 Library Services and Construction Act (LSCA) funded projects in California and their outcomes over the last two decades. This is a treasure trove for all kinds of cooperative projects and outreach services, with evaluation of successes and failures.

• A directory of more than 150 Wisconsin book publishers has been included in the recently published proceedings of the Conference on Book Publishing in Wisconsin, which was held last May.

The booklet, entitled Book Publishing in Wisconsin, was published by the University of Wisconsin—Madison Library School, one of the sponsors of the event, along with the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts, and Letters, and Alumni Association of the Library School.

It contains complete transcripts of speeches given by Walter S. Hamady of Perishable Press Limited, Robert E. Gard of Wisconsin House, Ron Bottrell of Western Publishing Company, Howard W. Mead of Wisconsin Trails/Tamarack Press, and Paul H. Hass of the State Historical Society Press.

Edited by James P. Danky of the State Historical Society Library, Professor Jack A. Clarke of the Library School, and Sara Z.
