Ann-Christe Young

Judith J. Field, senior lecturer for the Library and Information Science Program at Wayne State University (WSU), received the WSU Excellence in Teaching Award for her commitment to giving a quality education to the next generation of library and information science leaders. The selection committee selected Field based upon her excellence in teaching, instructional materials, and advising/mentoring.

Arthur P. Young,dean of libraries at Northern Illinois University, has been elected vice president/president-elect of the Illinois Library Association.

Appointments

Deborah A. Carverhas been named interim university librarian at the University of Oregon (UO). The search committee has the expectation of filling the endowed post by the start of the next fiscal year in July 2001. Carver, who had been associate librarian since 1994, came to UO in 1990 as assistant librarian for public services.

She also served as acting head of the reference section (1990-91) and as acting assistant librarian for personnel (1991-94).

David Lewishas been appointed dean of the Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis University (IUPUI) Library. He joined the IUPUI University Library staff in 1993 as head of public services, and later served as the deputy university librarian. For the last year he has served as the acting university librarian. Prior to joining IUPUI, Lewis held library positions at SUNY Farm-ingdale, Hamilton College,

Franklin and Marshall College, Columbia University, and the University of Connecticut. He is on the editorial board of Informa-

tion Technology and Libraries,and has published in the areas of library management, the effect of technology on libraries, and the economics of information. He was involved in the development and implementation of the INSPIRE project, which provides Web-based resources to the State of Indiana. Currently working with the Indianapolis Foundation Library Partners, Lewis helped develop the Marion County Internet Library.

David Lewis

Stephen Millerhas been named director of the Digital Library of Georgia at the University of Georgia. Miller will organize digitization projects for GALILEO—Georgia’s statewide electronic library—including University System institutions ,and archive collections throughout Georgia, as well as leading digitization efforts for the University

Libraries. Before this position, Miller, of the Rare Book, Manuscript and Special Collections Library at Duke University, managed a collaborative encoded archival description project involving Duke, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina State University, and the North Carolina State Archives. Prior to this project, he managed two digital imaging projects: the Library of Congress/Ameritech National Digital Library Competition Historie American Sheet Music Project and the William Gedney Photographs and Writings project.

Paul Brothershas been appointed business reference librarian in the Bruno Business Library at the University of Alabama.

Glenn Buntonis now head of systems development of Perry Library at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.

Steve Corrsinis now assistant director of technical services at Wayne State University.

Jessica Lacher-Feldmanhas been appointed public and outreach services coordinator in the Hoole Special Collections Library at the University of Alabama.

Mary Alice Fieldsis now music librarian at the University of Alabama Libraries.

Edward T. Fishwickhas been appointed humanities reference/liaison librarian at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.

Retirements

Donald Breneau, librarian of the Purdy/ Kresge Library at Wayne State University, retired after 37 years of Service.

Daniel J. Corleyhas retired as reference librarian at Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi after more than 24 years of Service.

Barbara Heath, assistant director of technical services at Wayne State University, has retired after 32 years of service.

William Hulsker,librarian of the Purdy/ Kresge Library at Wayne State University, has retired after 36 years of service.

John M. Littlewoodhas retired as government documents librarian, gay literature bibliographer, and associate professor of library administration at the University of Illinois Library at Urbana-Champaign, after more than 38 years of Service. He began his career in 1962 as a serials bibliographer and joined the Government Documents Library in 1964, where he served as head of the Documents Division through 1979. In 1996, he made a major estate commitment to create the John Littlewood and Don Laube Professorship in Gay Literature Fund, which will establish a full-time position at the library devoted to this area.

George Shipman, the Philip H. Knight University Librarian, is retiring after two decades of dedicated Service to the University of Oregon (UO). A Library of Congress intern in 1967, Shipman served there in several subsequent capacities until 1971. Then he went to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where he served as assistant and associate director of libraries for administrative services until joining UO in 1980. Shipman also served on the Board of Directors of the Center for Research Libraries and has a life membership in the ALA. He is also a member of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges Commission on Information Technologies. Shipman was an elected delegate to the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) Users Council for seven years, and served as a member and chair of OCLC’s Research Library Advisory Council. Among Shipman’s many achievements, he oversaw implementation of the library’s automated online information system; played a leadership role in the establishment of Orbis, a consortium of 14 public and private academic libraries in Oregon and Washington; initiated a successful library development program, which has raised roughly $30 million for a variety of library services and programs; stimulated the creation of a comprehensive library instructional program for Computer information literacy and research methods; and established the Knight Library Press, a fine printing press that produces limited edition books, broadsides, and commemorative pieces.

George Shipman

Deaths

Yenshew Lynn Chao, librarian of the Rubel Asiatic Research Collection of the Fine Arts Library of Harvard College Library, died on July 24, 2000, after a long illness. Chao came to

Harvard in 1971, as the first librarian of the Rubel Asiatic Research Bureau in the Oriental Department of the Fogg Art Museum. The bureau evolved into the Rubel Asiatic Research Collection (RARC) and was integrated into the Fine Arts Library of the Harvard College Library in 1978. Under Chao’s leadership, the Rubel Collection has grown into an indispensable research center for the study of the art, architecture, and archaeology of East Asia, Central Asia, Southeast Asia, and India. One of Chao’s many accomplishments was the development of the Rubel Classification Scheme, authority files, and simplified catalog filing rules for the collection. Her scheme is still in use in Rubel and has been adopted by other research libraries.

Yenshew Lynn Chao

Sharon C. Johnson, archivist for the Autry Museum of Western Heritage, lost her battle with cancer on August 22, 2000. Johnson began her career with the Autry in 1992, where she was responsible for the institutional archives and manuscript collections. She had a deep knowledge of the material and a love of Western history that made her indispensable to the museum. Handling a diverse collection, Johnson assisted staff and researchers and answered requests from around the world. Despite her busy schedule, she generously gave talks to local and national organizations. ■
