ACRL Southern California Chapter Meets
Approximately 100 librarians attended the second dinner meeting of the Southern California Chapter of the Association of College and Research Libraries, held at the Golden Dragon Restaurant in Los Angeles on Tuesday evening, March 7, with Joseph Becker, president, Becker and Hayes, Inc., speaking on “Library Networks.” Becker, who has long been involved in the planning of network activities nationally and a member of the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science, talked about library networks today and tomorrow, noting the marriage between the computer and communications; the need for standardization such as provided by MARC; and various kinds of networks: geographical (such as state, multi-state, and regional) and subject ones (such as MEDLARS). The White House Conference will help to encourage the federal government to take a more active role in the development of networking activities.
The program was planned by Douglas Davis, Cal State, Northridge; Ed Hess, USC; and George Gibbs, UCLA. Bylaws of the organization were developed by Judy Corin, UCLA; Norman Tanis, Cal State, Northridge; and Lorraine Matheis, UCLA. Nominees were selected by Judy Harvey, The Claremont Colleges; Bill Grainger, Pasadena City College; and Mimi Dudley, UCLA.
New officers for the chapter are: Douglas Davis, president; Judy Corin, vice-president; and Philip O’Brien, secretary/treasurer, Whittier College. All current members of ACRL are automatically considered members of the chapter. Others who wish to become members of the chapter may join upon payment of $5 to ACRL, Southern California Chapter, mailed to Philip M. O’Brien, Librarian, Whittier College, 7031 Founders Hill Rd., Whittier, CA 90608.
