Ann-Christe Young

Betty Bengston, retiring director of libraries at the University of Washington, was appointed a member of the National Council on Humanities by former President Bill Clinton. She also has been named special advisory to the president for academic library services at OCLC.

The Association of Southeastern Research Libraries (ASERL) has elected the following new members to its 2001-2002 Board of Directors: president—Stella Bentley, dean of libraries, Auburn University; president-elect— Connie McCarthy, dean of university libraries, College of William and Mary; past president—Paul Gherman, university librarian, Vanderbilt University; Secretary-Treasurer— Barbara Dewey, dean of libraries, University of Tennessee at Knoxville; at-large members—Jennifer Cargill, dean of libraries, Louisiana State University; Jerry Stephens, dean of libraries, University of Alabama at Birmingham; John Ulmschneider, executive director, Virginia Commonwealth University Libraries.

Cherie Carl,reference and research services librarian at the Virginia Beach Higher Education Center of Old Dominion University, has been named Librarian of the Year for 2000. She is credited with establishing excellent working relationships with university staff members, while maintaining a working connection with Old Dominion’s main campus. In addition, she has increased interlibrary loan and document delivery use and has attended several conferences promoting professional development.

Nancy L. Eaton,dean of university libraries at Pennsylvania State University, has been appointed to the National Digital Strategy Advisory Board of the Library of Congress. The group will examine strategies that will ensure the safekeeping of digital materials for posterity, a problem which if not addressed will result in great voids in historical archives.

Connie Foster,serials coordinator in the Department of Library Automation and Technical Services at Western Kentucky University Libraries, is now editor of Serials Review.

Following are the winners of this year’s Amigos Library Services Fellowship awards: JaNae Kinikin, Suzanne Holcome, Janet Ahrberg, and Tanya Finchum (Oklahoma State University) for their project Phase II: A Project to Create a Web-accessible Index to Four Oklahoma Periodicals; Cecilia Aros Hunter (Texas A&M University, Kingsville) for “Preserving Photographs in a Digital World” Seminar; Cesar Caballero (University of Texas at El Paso) for Testing of Two Strategic Planning Models for Development of Electronic Resources in Academic Libraries; and Sherry Young (Cameron University) for Academic Library Friends Groups: Workshop and Consultation.

Charles Lowry,dean of libraries at the University of Maryland, has received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Alumni As sociation of the University of North Carolina School of Information and Library Science in Chapel Hill.

Appointments

Beth Hammond,

Beth Hammond,university librarian and chair of the Division of Library Services at Mercer University, has been named dean of University Libraries at Mercer. “This change in title better reflects the full range of responsibilities and skills Beth exercises in managing the university’s Division of Library Services,” said Russell G. Warren, Mercer University provost. Since joining Mercer in 1978, Hammond has held various positions in collections, reference, circulation, and user services in the university’s libraries. Before becoming university librarian, she was interim director of university libraries from October 1998 to July 1999. She is a member of numerous committees and councils within the university. She was selected to participate in the inaugural Frye Institute at Emory University. She also served as chair of the Atlanta-Macon Private Academic Libraries group for 1999-2000.

Patrick Wilkinsonwas named director of Forrest R. Polk Library at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. Previously, Wilkinson worked at Murray State University in Kentucky, the University of Northern Iowa, and the University of Vermont.

Amira Aaronis now vice president of library services at Faxon RoweCom.

Robert Alanhas been named head of the Serials Department at Pennsylvania State University Libraries in University Park.

Becky Albitzis now electronic resources and scholarly communication librarian in the Arts and Humanities Library of Pennsylvania State University in University Park.

Joyce Ampujais now reference librarian at Pennsylvania State’s Beaver Library in Monaca.

Yurong “Jade” Atwillhas been named Asian studies cataloging librarian in Cataloging Services at Pennsylvania State University in University Park.

Stephanie Tama Bartelshas been appointed instructional services librarian at the New Brunswick Libraries of Rutgers University.

Laura Bowenhas been named systems librarian at Gettysburg College.

William Brockmanhas been appointed the endowed position of Paterno Family librarian in Literature in the Arts and Humanities Library at Pennsylvania State University in University Park.

Leo Voogthas been appointed director of library relations Europe, Middle East and Africa at Elsevier Science.

Billie Earl Walkeris now reference librarian at Pennsylvania State Berks-Thun Library in Reading.

Thomas B. Wallis now director of public services at Duke University Libraries.

Marilyn Wilthas been appointed libraries training and learning coordinator at the Rutgers University Libraries.

Jill L. Woolumshas been named reference librarian in the Education Psychology Library at the University of California, Berkeley.

Paul A. Wysshas joined the library staff at the University of Wisconsin-Stout as reference/instruction/assistive technology/distance education librarian.

Retirements

Bob (Robert K.) Brucehas retired as cocollege librarian and reference coordinator at the St. Olaf College Libraries. A lifetime member of ALA, Bruce worked for more than 30 years at three institutions in Minnesota (starting at Carleton College and including Minneapolis Public Library). He also worked at academic libraries in Wyoming, New Jersey, Colorado, and Alaska—active in each state’s library association as well as serving on various advisory boards. In addition, he served as a library advisory to Kabul University in Afghanistan for two years and was in the first class of ALA Library Fellows, spending a year in Indonesia working with the continuing education wing of the national library in Jakarta.

Roger Tarmenhas retired after more than 35 years of service as the music librarian at Rutgers University’s New Brunswick Libraries.

Deaths

Elizabeth (Betty) Baughman,75, who taught cataloging for more than 20 years at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science (now the Department of Information Studies) at UCLA, died December 13, 2000. Baughman earned the Margaret Mann Citation in 1982.

David Knipe Berninghausen,85, retired director of the University of Minnesota Library School, died April 2001. Having served as head librarian of Birmingham Southern University in Alabama for two years right at the end of World War II, Berninghausen accepted the position of chief librarian at the Cooper Union in New York City from (1947-53). It was during this time that he became the founding chair of ALA’s Committee on Intellectual Freedom and played a major role in drafting ALA’s Library Bill of Rights in open opposition to fierce attacks upon freedom of information in public libraries and demands for censorship coming from political extremists and self-appointed censors in those years. In 1953, Berninghausen became director of the University of Minnesota’s graduate school of library science, serving in that capacity for the next 21 years. He spent a year in Taipei, Taiwan, where he was an exchange professor at National Taiwan University on a Rockefeller Foundation grant (1962-63).

Pattie McIntyre,retired reference librarian at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill (UNCCH), died June 9. Before coming to UNCCH, McIntyre worked at the Charlotte Public Library and served as a civilian librarian at Valley Forge General Hospital in Pennsylvania. In 1949, she accepted a position as reference librarian at UNCCH and spent 30 years in the Humanities Division of the main library.
