Julia Crawford,patent and trademark librarian at Oklahoma State University (OSU), has received the Oklahoma Library Association’s (OLA) Outstanding New Librarian Award for 2000. She is active in OLA, secretary and president-elect of the Oklahoma Chapter of ACRL, and secretary of the Patent and Trademark Depository Library Association. OSU Dean of Libraries, Edward R. Johnson, said, “Crawford is a role model for all new librarians. . . . OLA’s recognition of her is a testament to her professionalism, the high regard of her colleagues, her commitment to the ideals of librarianship, and her qualities as a leader.”
Karen C. Driessen,director of the Instructional Media Services Division at the University of Montana in Missoula’s Maureen and Mike Mansfield Library, has been awarded the 2000 Sheila Cates Award for Librarian of the Year. The award, presented by the Montana Library Association, recognizes Driessen’s contribution to the profession.
Ray Larsonand Michael Buckland of the School of Information Management and Systems at the University of California at Berkeley are among the recipients of a $1.3 million grant from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency for a project, “Translingual Information Management using Domain Ontologies,” to improve access to information in foreign languages.
Les Pourciau,retired director of libraries at the University of Memphis from 1970 to 1999, has been awarded an honored diploma and the title “Man of the World” by the International Organizing Committee of the CRIMEA 2000 Conference. Pourciau currently serves as the deputy chair of the International Organizing Committee for the CRIMEA Conferences. He has been a five-time invited lecturer at various Chinese universities and, in 1996, was named a consulting professor to the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications. He is also the editor of Ethics and Electronic Information in the Twenty-first Century, published in 1999 by the Purdue University Press. In 1988, he was chosen as the Outstanding Alumnus of the School of Library and Information Science at Louisiana State University and, in 1999, was chosen to receive the Distinguished Alumni Award from the School of Library and Information Science at Indiana University.
Appointments
Beth Fuseler Averyhas been appointed director of library services at Western State College of Colorado.
Sidney E. Berger,former head of special collections at the University of California (UC) at Riverside, is now director of the California Center for the Book (headquartered at UCLA in the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies). The center is affiliated with the Library of Congress Center for the Book.
Berger was at UC Riverside for ten years, before which he was curator of printed books and then curator of manuscripts at the American Antiquarian Society. He has published more than 50 books and articles and lectured extensively on literary and bibliographic topics for nearly 30 years. He edited Rare Books & Manuscripts Librarianship (1993 -1999) and was associate editor of Microform & Imaging Review.

Frank D’Andraiais now dean of Library Services for the University of Montana.
John McGintyhas been appointed director of the Loyola-Notre Dame Library. The library has 400,000 volumes in its collection and extensive online resources serving both Loyola and Notre Dame, neighboring institutions in Baltimore. McGinty served as director of the Marist College Library in Poughkeepsie, New York, since 1987. Prior to his position at Marist, he served the Fairfield University Library, the University of Connecticut Health Center Library, and the SUNY Health Science Center at Brooklyn.
Lance Queryhas been named Tulane University’s new dean of libraries and academic information resources. Query was dean of the university libraries at Western Michigan University (WMU) before coming to Tulane. Prior to this position at WMU, Query was a faculty member of that school’s History Department and its assistant university librarian for planning and administration. And before this position, Query was the acting university librarian at Northwestern University.
Daniel Zagerhas been named librarian at the University of Rochester’s Sibley Music Library. Prior to this position, he was music librarian and adjunct associate professor of music at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was also associate professor of church music and music history and coordinator of the master of church music program at Concordia University in River Forest, Illinois; and he was conservatory librarian and lecturer in musicology at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Zager has been a member of the Music Library Association’s Board of Directors and served as editor of the organization’s journal, Notes, from 1992 to 1997.
Ruta Abolinshas been named director of media archives and Peabody Awards Collection at the University of Georgia.
Armanda Baroneis the new head of the original cataloging division of technical services at the University of California at Berkeley.
Ashley Bonnetteis now assistant professor of library science at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
Joan Ellen Broomeis now information services librarian at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro.
Sherry T. Broussardhas joined the Dupre Library at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette as the new technical services special projects librarian.
Joanne M. Budlerhas been named the new deputy state librarian of Michigan.
Glenn Buntonis now head of systems development at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.
Sandra Castilleis the new head of the circulation department at the Dupre Library at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
Lance Chancehas joined the University of Louisiana at Lafayette as systems analyst.
Lee Kimball Clarkhas been appointed head cataloger at Harvard University’s Dunbarton Oaks.
John Dupuishas been appointed science librarian at York University in Ontario, Canada.
Megan Farrell,who served in many capacities at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, has taken a position in the Library of Dow Chemical Company in Michigan.

Retirements
Anne Anningeris retiring as Philip Hofer Curator of Printing and Graphic Arts in the Houghton Library of Harvard University, after nearly 18 years. In addition to her duties as curator, Anninger was lecturer on History of Art and Architecture and has conducted seminars, and maintained an active program of lectures for neighboring institutions. As Hofer Curator, Anninger was instrumental in securing grants for digitizing and microfilming projects. Anniger began working at Harvard in 1975 as a bibliographic assistant and was promoted to rare book cataloger for printing and graphic arts in the Houghton Library. She is a twotime recipient of the Douglas W. Bryant Fellowship for Bibliographical Research. In 1982, Anninger left Harvard for Wellesley College, where she served as special collections librarian and then as associate librarian before returning to the Houghton Library in 1990.
Ivan Arguelles,head of the Original Cataloging Division of Technical Services and classics selector, has retired from the University of California (UC) Berkeley Library after 22 years of service. He began his library career in 1968 at the New York Public Library, where he worked for ten years. He began working at UC in November 1978 as head of serials cataloging, and he was head of the Bibliographics Services Department. After receiving training at the Library of Congress, Arguelles was the National Coordinated Cataloging Project cataloger, producing bibliographic and authority records directly in the Library of Congress database for German, Catalan, and Friesian material.
Chuck Hamsaretired from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Library after 30 years of faculty service at the Dupre Library.
H. Joanne Harrar,after a library career that spanned almost five decades—including 20 years as director of the University of Maryland (UM) Libraries in College Park—has retired. Harrar first became involved in library work at Duke and Oberlin and then taught in the Rutgers’ Graduate School of Library Services. She later served as head librarian at Winthrop College and was an associate director of libraries at the University of Georgia, when she was selected to be director of libraries at UM. Harrar stepped down from that position in 1995 and has been working in several capacities for the libraries since then. Many accomplishments took place during her directorate at UM, including implementation of the CARL VICTOR Library Information Management System, creation of the Music Library and the U.S. Patents Depository Library, expansion of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Library, establishment of the National Trust for Historic Preservation Library on campus, the addition of a number of important special collections, expansion of the grants program, and reorganization of the library’s internal structure.
Karen A. Hatcher,dean of Library Services for the University of Montana (UM), has retired after 31 years of service to UM. She served as dean from 1990 to 1999. Hatcher belonged to numerous national, regional, and state professional organizations. She was president of the Montana Library Association (1989-90), the Pacific Northwest Library Association (1996-97), and was active in ALA’s Library Administration and Management Association and the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services. During her tenure as dean, the library’s endowment was significantly increased. In January 2000, the Montana Board of Regents conferred upon her the title, professor of Library Services Emeritus.
Deaths
Helen S. Butz,retired University of Michigan (UM) Rare Books librarian, died June 12 following an extended battle against Parkinson’s disease and cardiac difficulties. Butz worked in various capacities for the libraries of Princeton Theological Seminary and Syracuse University; she retired from UM in 1989. A lifelong ALA member, Butz was active in the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section and was also a member of Beta Phi Mu and Phi Kappa Phi.
Martha Friedman,associate professor of library administration at the University of Illinois Library at Urbana-Champaign, died June 21, 2000. She served as history and philosophy librarian for 34 years and devoted much of her life to the academic community and its issues, such as faculty governance, academic status for librarians, and collective bargaining in higher education. Friedman served in leadership positions for numerous state and national organizations, including one term as president of the American Association of University Professors (1978-80), during which she was instrumental in the passage of legislation that established the U.S. Department of Education.
Henry G. McClernan,director of libraries of the Montana Tech Library of the University of Montana, died June 8, 2000, in Butte, Montana. Before being named Director of Libraries, McClernan held positions in the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology as an economic geologist, senior research geologist, acting deputy director, and acting director. He was also acting dean and director of graduate studies and research, director of alumni and institutional affairs, and director of institutional research for Montana Tech. In 1994, he became acting director of the Tech Library, and in 1995, university associate dean and director of libraries. McClernan served as an elected member of the Montana Legislature and as a state library commissioner. He has been an integral part of the Montana University System for the last 31 years. ■
