Antiquarian and Secondhand Book Dealers in Australia: A Directory,by Brian R. Howes (106 pages, 1989), is a guide to 129 dealers in 116 locations, with a summary of their subject specialities. Appendices include subject indexes, a checklist of catalogs issued from 1987 to mid-1989, lists of binders, restorers, auctioneers, appraisers, and ' useful reference books. Charlie Chan at the Movies: History, Filmography, and Criticism,by Ken Hanke (270 pages, December 1989), gives the complete history of the most popular film series in the 1930s and 1940s. The films are described in chronological order, and biographies of the three most famous screen Chans (Warner Oland, Sidney Toler, and Roland Winters) are presented in detail. The book is laced with a generous helping of the detective’s aphorisms (“Sharp wit sometimes much better than deadly weapon”), which should make it a hit with browsers. Collection Management: Background and Principles,by William A. Wortman (243 pages, September 1989), covers the basic principles of managing library collections and offers examples of good practices. Topics covered include the uses and limitations of different types of library materials, the user community, collection evaluation, access, preservation and weeding, and training. Descriptive Statistical Techniques for Li- brarians,by Arthur W. Hafner (261 pages, July 1989), uses pertinent library examples to demonstrate statistical concepts, terminology, and measures. Useful as a library school textbook as well as a reference guide for administrators and librarians, the book focuses on analysis and interpretation of data. The Directory of Historical Curriculum Collections,compiled by ACRL’s EBSS Subcommittee on Historical Curriculum Collections (51 pages, 1988), describes repositories of historical teaching materials for kindergarten through grade twelve. Footage 89: North American Film and Video Sources,edited by Richard Prelinger and Celeste R. Hoffnar (880 pages, July 1989), contains detailed profiles of 1,635 moving image (both film and videotape) collections held by archives, libraries, historical societies, stock footage houses, producers and distributors, museums, broadcasters, government agencies, colleges and universities, associations, and corporate archives. Coverage includes the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Each entry includes contact person, telephone, detailed description of holdings, rights to material, licensing and reuse policies, and viewing and duplication facilities. Access is enhanced by a subject index with more than 36,000 individual entries, a name index to sources and collections, a television series index, detailed provides of moving image collections held by the Library of Congress and the National Archives, and a glossary of terms. Categories surveyed include a profile of the librarian, the company’s history, facilities and organization, size of staff, user population, budget information, collection size, use of technology, and services. Some of the companies that are profiled include Bank of America, Chase Manhattan Corporation, the Coca-Cola Company, and ITT. Musical Terms, Symbols and Theory: An Illustrated Dictionary,by Michael C. Thomsett (288 pages, November 1989), defines more than 1,400 terms, theories, instruments, and symbols used in musical notation. Occupational Entry: Library and Infor- mation Science Students’Attitudes,Demographics and Aspirations Survey,by Kathleen M. Heim and William E. Moen (237 pages, 1989), describes the results of a 1988 survey of 3,484 master’s students enrolled at U.S. ALA-accredited programs of library and information science. The factors examined include gender and ethnicity, enrollment status, type of position desired, mobility, undergraduate background, influences in choice of profession, and attitudes toward library work. Operations Handbook for the Small Academic Library,edited by Gerard B. McCabe (360 pages, September 1989), was designed as a companion volume to McCabe's The Smaller Academic Library: A Management Handbook (Greenwood, 1988) . Some of the topics included are: administrative functions, personnel issues, circulation, interlibrary loan, off-campus library services, technical services, technology, and facilities planning. Preservation and Conservation in the Small Library,by Marcia Duncan Lowry (16 pages, July 1989) , has been published as no. 15 in the LAMA Small Libraries Publications series. The advice given is very practical and ranges from proper physical environment and collection maintenance practices to torn page repair and special materials conservation. The booklet costs $5.00 (printed on alkaline paper, too!) and is available from ALA Publishing, 50 E. Huron St., Chicago, IL 60611. ISBN 0-8389-5718-8.

Preservation Guide 6: Matting and Fram- ing,by Alan Balicki (13 pages, 1989), is the latest in an excellent series of illustrated booklets published by the Historic New Orleans Collection. This one offers suggestions on preserving framed artworks. Copies are available for $3.95 from the Historical New Orleans Collection, 533 Royal St., New Orleans, LA 70130-2179. ISBN 0-917860-28-4.

A Selected Bibliography of the Siegel Collection(54 pages, 1989) describes the private library and personal papers of Rabbi Dr. Seymour Siegel, recently acquired by St. Lawrence University. Preparation of the bibliography began in February 1989, in anticipation of the official dedication of the collection, which occurred on September 17, 1989, in the library. Siegel was Ralph Simon Professor of Jewish Ethics and Theology at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. A copy may be requested from the Owen D. Six Decades at Yaddo (51 pages, 1986)contains original essays by six authors who describe their experiences at Yaddo, an artists’ colony in Saratoga Springs, New York, where writers, composers, painters, sculptors, and other visual artists may do their work uninterrupted by the outside world. The essays are by John Cheever, Malcolm Cowley, Eleanor Clark, Alfred Kazin, Hortense Calisher, and Gail Godwin. Published on the 60th anniversary of the colony’s establishment, the booklet has had only limited private distribution until now. It is available for $24.75 (postpaid) from Yaddo, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.

A Study of the Feasibility of Merging the State Library and University Libraries: A Report to the Wyoming State Legislature(50 pages, October 1989) is the report of a committee mandated by the Wyoming State Legislature to consider such a merger. Their conclusion, that an independent state library is essential and that the present institution must undergo some fundamental changes in scope and role, resulted in a recommendation to increase resource sharing among Wyoming libraries in order to fulfill the State Library’s long-range plan. The report will be instructive to those who may be faced with similar legislation. A copy may be requested from the Office of the Director, University of Wyoming Libraries, P.O.
