Edited byFredson Bowers, University of Virginia. Introduction by J. C. Levenson, University of Virginia. lxxiv, 362 pp., illus. $15.00

The O’Ruddy,an Irish romance, is the last work written by Crane. It was left unfinished at the time of his death and was later completed by Robert Barr. The O’Ruddy shows the extent of Crane’s artistic creativity and his genuine feeling for Irish people, language, and customs. This edition, based mainly on an unrecorded holograph manuscript of Crane’s and on Robert Barr’s early page proof, is as close as possible to the version Crane originally intended. The Introduction gives a detailed analysis of The O’Ruddy’s sources.
