PROFILE

Brantley H. Parsleyhas been named director of library services at Mobile College, Alabama, effective July 1. Prior to this appointment he served as library director of Campbellsville College, Kentucky, for the past 16 years. During this time he was chairman of the Academic Section of the Kentucky Library Association and first chairman of the Librarians of the Council of Independent Kentucky Colleges and Universities.

Parsley developed a media program for the Taylor County Baptist Association and was elected director of training for the association. He also served as president of the Central Kentucky Arts Series. Parsley received his MLS from Emory University and has a Master of Religious Education degree and a Bachelor of Divinity degree from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.

John David Marshall,professor at the Todd Library, Middle Tennessee State University, Murfreesboro, has been elected a Churchill Fellow of the Winston Churchill Memorial and Library in the United States at Westminster College, Fulton, Missouri. Churchill Fellows serve in an advisory capacity to the board of trustees and the president of Westminster College on matters relating to support, operation, and overall management of the Memorial and Library.

Nancy Marshall,associate director of libraries for public services at the Memorial Library of the University of Wisconsin, Madison, was honored as Librarian of the Year by the Wisconsin Library Association at its state convention October 27-29 at Mount Telemark. The award is given in recognition of outstanding leadership and accomplishment in library service. The recent revision of the U.S. copyright law is one of Marshall’s areas of expertise. She has served as president of ALA’s Reference and Adult Services Division and is an elected member of ALA Council.

RETIREMENTS

Meda Boutwellhas retired from her position as director of the Library and Learning Resources Center at Eastern New Mexico University, Clovis, where she had held that position since 1969.

Forrest F. Carhart, Jr.,retired on September 30 as executive director of the New York Metropolitan Reference and Research Library Agency after 50 years of library service. Carhart was appointed as METRO’S first full-time executive director in 1972.

Carhart held administrative positions at the West Virginia University Library, the Iowa State College Library, and the University of Denver Libraries. He served as staff librarian at the Air Force Personnel Training and Research Center, and from 1955 to 1959 he was deputy director of the U.S. Air Force Academy Library. In 1959-1972 Carhart was assistant director and then director of the American Library Association’s Library Technology Program. During this time LTP developed a major book publishing program and new products and services for which fourteen countries granted patents on five inventions.

Forrest F. Carhart‚ Jr.

Carhart served as chair of the American National Standards Institute Committee Z85 and was a member of the National Microfilm Association Standards Committee on Supplies and Materials. Included in his consulting work was membership on National Science Foundation oversight committees. His MLS is from the University of Michigan.

Eleanor J. Carmichael,technical services librarian at DePauw University, Greencastle, Indiana, retired on June 30 after 22 years of service.

Kathryn Lewisretired as special collections librarian at Texas Tech University, Lubbock.

Momoko Murakamiretired as law librarian of the Law Library, University of California, Los Angeles, with over 25 years of service.

Wilbur C. Trautmanhas retired from the position of head of administrative services at Temple University, Philadelphia, where he has served since 1970.

Harriet C. Venableretired as director of Troy State University’s branch libraries at Dothan and Fort Rucker, Alabama, on September 1.

DEATHS

HarlanC. Brown, who was director and associate director of libraries at North Carolina State University, Raleigh, from 1939 until his retirement in 1971, died on October 10.

Frederick R. Goff,chief of the Library of Congress Rare Book Division from 1945 to 1972, died in London on September 26. Appointed curator of Rare Book Collections in 1940, he was promoted to assistant chief the next year and to chief in 1945.

A graduate of Brown University, where he earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees, he worked during the years at Brown as assistant to Margaret B. Stillwell on the compilation of Incunabula in American Libraries: Second Census (1940). At the Library of Congress he continued to develop a specialization in 15th-century books. In 1964 he published a third census of incunabula and a supplement in 1972.

His many honors included a doctor of letters degree from Brown University in 1965. In addition to membership in most of the major bibliographical and collectors’ organizations, he served as chair of the ACRL Rare Books and Manuscripts Section in 1961 and as president of the Bibliographical Society of America in 1968-1970.

Mildred Wilson,who retired in 1962 as head cataloger in the Mann Library, Cornell University, died recently in Sarasota, Florida. ■ ■
