• American Film Distribution: The ChangingMarketplace, by Suzanne Mary Donahue (394 pages, 1987), traces the history of American film distribution with particular emphasis on the revolution of the system in the 1970s and 1980s. The author compares the methods of major distributors with those of independent companies and filmmakers who distribute their own pictures, and offers alternatives for filmmakers who are unable to secure a major distributor for their work. Some related topics covered are censorship, publicity, critical acclaim, promotion, festivals and film markets, and distribution contracts. The manual is designed to provide useful guidance to those who most often catalog music materials without benefit of musical expertise. • Civil War Maps in the National Archives (140pages, 2d ed., 1986) describes the largest single collection of cartographic records in the world pertaining to the Civil War. Part one is a general guide to the 8,000 Civil War maps in the Cartographic and Architectural Branch of the Archives. Part two describes selected maps in greater detail, with 33 illustrations. • Directory of Periodicals Online: Indexed, Ab- stracted and Full-Text, edited by Catharine Chung (Volume 1: News, Law & Business, 340 pages, 2d ed., 1986), provides information on more than 8,000 periodicals found in the services of more than 375 database producers. Each periodical entry lists all the databases indexing it, coverage dates, format information, and subject areas. A separate subject–to–title index identifies appropriate periodicals and databases when specific titles are not known. • Faking It: An International Bibliography of Art and Literary Forgeries, compiled by James Kooba- tion (1986), contains an extensive list of exhibits and exhibition catalogs of faked artwork and forged literature. Nearly all of the 1,811 entries are annotated or provide references to specific abstracts. Fifty sections of special interest, ranging from paintings to netsuke to papier mache, are included. •Four Dubliners, by Richard Ellmann (106pages, January 1987), a critical study of the life and works of Oscar Wilde, James Joyce, William Butler Yeats, and Samuel Beckett, has been published by the Library of Congress. The four portraits included in this book, given in different form as lectures at the Library of Congress during the last four years, confirm the author’s authority as critic and biographer. Ellmann was the first American to hold a professorship in English literature at Oxford (1970-1984). • “A Lifted Study–Storehouse”: The Brynmor Jones Library 1929-1979, by Philip Larkin and updated to 1985 by Maeve Brennan, has been published by Hull University Press as no. 1 in the Philip Larkin Memorial Series. The new series is a tribute to the ideas and interests of Larkin, the Brynmor Jones librarian for over thirty years until his death in 1985. Larkin’s original text was written in 1979 to commemorate the Library’s 50th anniversary; this expanded version covers Larkin’s last five years. • Map Workshop: Proceedings, edited by BarbaraShupe (76 pages, 1986), contains transcripts of the addresses presented at a meeting sponsored by the Long Island Library Resources Council’s Committee on Government Information, March 15, 1984, at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. The addresses contain much practical information on map use, international maps, New York State maps, Long Island maps, atlases and gazetteers, and the National Cartographic Information Center. • Pilgrims and Pioneers: New England Women in the Arts, edited by Alicia Faxon and Sylvia Moore (February 1986), covers the work of New England women painters, sculptors, architects, and fabric artists of the past and present, and considers such topics as collage, landscape, issue-oriented art, interior space in the work of women artists, the art education of working women, and the economics of art survival for women. It also explores the contributions made by women architects, art collectors, and gallery owners. Eighteen artists, art historians, architects, curators, and critics have contributed essays to this volume. • The Rule of Experts: Occupational Licensing in America, by S. David Young (100 pages, March 1987), offers a careful analysis of occupational licensing and its effects, both intended and unintended, on the regulated professionals and the consumers they serve. Over 1,000 occupations are currently regulated by all or some of the 50 states, varying in intensity from registration to licensing. Young argues that licensing regulations exist primarily to enhance the economic position of the covered occupations. • The Secret War in Central America: Sandinista Assault on World Order, by John Norton Moore (195 pages, 1987), documents the extent of the Sandinista war since 1980 against El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Costa Rica. The author traces the Cuban connection in the Sandinista movement, the dramatic rise in Soviet military support, the militarization of Nicaraguan society, and its subversive attacks against nearby governments in Central America. • Wild and Exotic Mushroom Cultivation in North America: A Growers’ and Gourmets’ Guide to the New Edible Species, by Geraldine C. The book includes an annotated bibliography of works about mushrooms, lists of mycological associations and professional and amateur growers’ groups, an alphabetical listing of mushroom–related businesses and organizations, and a subject index.
