Ross Atkinson,associate university librarian for collection development at Cornell University, is the 1993 recipient of the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) Best of “LRTS” Award. The award is given to the author of the best paper published each year in the division’s official journal, Library Resources and Technical Services (LRTS). Atkinson received the award for “The Acquisitions Librarian as Change Agent in the Transition to the Electronic Library” in vol. 36, no. 1 (1992) of LRTS. Atkinson began his career as a participant in the NEH/CLR-funded Scholar-Librarian Program at Northwestern University. Prior to his current position he worked as humanities bibliographer at Northwestern University and assistant university librarian for collection development at the University of Iowa and Cornell University.

Jo A. Cates,head of the Transportation Library at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, has been named to Who’s Who of American Women 1992/93. She has distinguished herself as a journalist, librarian, and consultant. Cates founded the library at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies in St. Petersburg, Florida, and has been active in news/media librarianship for many years. She has published many articles, numerous book reviews, and authored Journalism: A Guide to the Reference Literature (1990), named “Best Reference Book” by Library Journal in 1991.

Sally Siew-Siew Chuah,who earned her MS degree in library and information science from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, has been selected by the Smithsonian Institution Libraries for the post-graduate residency in library and information science. During the one-year residency, funded by the James Smithson Society, Chuah will rotate through the four divisions of the libraries. The program is designed to offer the resident a diverse program of practical work experience in a research library, training appropriate for a beginning professional, and exposure to bibliographic resources in the Washington, D.C., area.

Mary E. Jackson,head of the Interlibrary Loan Department of the University of Pennsylvania Library, will serve as a visiting program officer with the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) through the end of 1993- In that position she will work with the ARL Committee on Access to Information Resources to develop strategies for improving interlibrary loan and document delivery activities. Jackson is a nationally recognized speaker, author, consultant, and workshop leader. She wrote, with Shirley K. Baker, Maximizing Access, Minimizing Cost: A First Step Toward the Information Access Future.

James Neal,dean of the Indiana University Library system, has been chosen Outstanding Librarian of 1993 by the Indiana Library Federation. He received the recognition on May 7 at the federation’s conference in Indianapolis. The award is given in recognition of innovative leadership in the development and improvement of library service or for distinguished service to the profession. Neal has been an invited speaker to the International Library Federation Association meeting in India; involved in planning cooperative efforts with libraries in Moscow and other east European locations; and chair of the Indiana delegation to the White House Conference on Library and Information Services.

Ann L. Okerson,director of the Office of Scientific and Academic Publishing of the Association of Research Libraries, is the 1993 recipient of the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS) Blackwell North America Scholarship Award. The award, a citation to the winner and $2,000 to the library school of the winner’s choice, is given to the author of an outstanding monograph, published article, or original paper on acquisitions, collection development, or areas of resources development in libraries. Okerson received the award for “With Feathers: Effects of Copyright and Ownership on Scholarly Publishing” (College & Research Libraries, vol. 52, no. 5, 1991). Okerson attended San Francisco State University and Pacific Union College and received a B.A. in English and German; she received her master’s degree in library science from the University of California, Berkeley. She has designated the University of Michigan School of Library and Information Science for the $2,000 scholarship.

Susan E. Tulis,documents librarian at the University of Virginia law library, is the winner of the 1993 Documents to the People Award of the ALA’s Government Documents Round Table (GODORT) and its joint sponsor, Congressional Information Service, Inc. On leave this year to the American Association of Law Libraries as its assistant Washington affairs representative, Tulis is a member of the Depository Library Council, a former chair of GODORT, and a frequent speaker, author, and editor. The award carries a $2,000 stipend that Tulis has chosen to use to support, through GODORT, a broad discussion of the future of the Depository Library Program.

Ann E. Prentice

Ann E. Prentice,associate vice-president for information resources at the University of South Florida, has been appointed dean of the College of Library and Information Services, University of Maryland, College Park. From 1978-1988 Prentice served as professor and director of the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She has also taught at the State University of New York at Albany and at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. Prentice holds an A.B. degree in political science from the University of Rochester, an MLS from the State University of New York at Albany, and a D.L.S. from Columbia University. She was also awarded an honorary doctor of letters by Keuka College, Keuka Park, New York. She was president of the American Society for Information Science in 1992 and has been a member of the Board of Directors since 1985. In ALA she was a member of the Council in 1979-1983 and has chaired the Baber Award Committee, the Professional Ethics Committee, and numerous other committees and juries.

Thomas Amosis now assistant librarian and assistant head of public services in the Lilly Library at Indiana University-Bloomington.

Sujata Banerjeewas appointed visiting assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Library and Information Science.

Philip Bantinhas been named assistant librarian and director of university archives at Indiana University-Bloomington.

Timothy Carrhas been named branch librarian of the Smithsonian Institution Libraries’ new National Postal Museum Branch, Washington, D.C.

Xiao-fei Chenhas been appointed Chinese bibliographer/reference librarian at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Beverly J. Denningerhas been appointed gifts/catalog librarian at the Syracuse University Library, New York.

Peter Devlinis now personnel librarian at Northwestern University Library, Evanston, Illinois.

Marek Jozef Druzdelhas been appointed visiting assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Library and Information Science.

Carolyn Ellis Gonzalezhas been named Latin American materials cataloger at the University of Texas at Austin Libraries.

Roberta Gwiltis now head of the Monograph Unit at the Syracuse University Library, New York.

Martin Halbertis now head of networked systems at the Fondren Library, Rice University, Houston.

James Hodsonhas been named manager of reference systems and services at the Bibliographical Center for Research, Aurora, Colorado.

Alvin Hutchinsonis now vertebrate zoology librarian in the Smithsonian Institution Libraries’ Natural History Branch, Washington, D.C.

Leigh A. Kilmanhas been appointed reference/bibliographic instruction librarian at Southwest Texas State University, San Marcos.

John O. Kirkpatrickis now curator of modern British and American manuscripts at the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, University of Texas at Austin.

Thomas H. Kreneckhas been named special collections librarian/archivist at Corpus Christi State University, Texas.

Dirk Mahlinghas been appointed visiting assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Library and Information Science.

Lisa Moeckelis now head of the Information Services Department at the Syracuse University Library, New York.

Donna Nicholsonhas been appointed science librarian at the University of Michigan-Dearborn.

Fay Norwoodhas been appointed information services librarian at Valdosta State College, Georgia.

Olga Paradishas been named science/engineering librarian in the Jesse H. Jones Library at Baylor University, Waco, Texas.

Charles F. Tremperis now head of the Serials Unit at the Syracuse University Library, New York.

Mary Anne Waltzis now head of the Maps and Government Information Department at the Syracuse University Library, New York.

Lydia Wayslenkois now head of database management at the Syracuse University Library, New York.

Retirements

Helen Edgemon,serials and binding supervisor at the Sweet Briar College Library, Sweet Briar, Virginia, and her sister Mildred Edgemon, cataloging supervisor, retired at the end of June after a combined total of 105 years of service.

Deaths

Mary Elizabeth Green Anna,former librarian at the University of Maryland, College Park, died on May 14 at the age of 80.

Yvonne E. Greear,former assistant university librarian for public services at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), died April 11 following an extended illness. Greear received her

B. F.A. in radio broadcasting in 1948 and her MLS in 1962 from the University of Texas at Austin. She worked for 30 years at UTEP, beginning as secretary to the librarian. She left the college for seven years to work in special libraries, then returned in 1964 as a reference librarian. She was later promoted to head of reference services, a position she held until 1971 when she was named assistant director for public services. She retired from UTEP in 1988. ■
