Richard Hume Werking has been appointed director of libraries and associate professor of history at Trinity University, San Antonio, Texas, effective June 1, Werking has been associate director for collection development at Trinity since July 1981. He will succeed Robert Houze, who is retiring after 18 years as head librarian.

Before coming to Trinity, Werking served as acting director of libraries at the University of Mississippi. He was also head of reference at Mississippi from 1977 to 1979 and assistant director for reference and collection development services from 1979 to 1980. While there Werking organized and served as co-chair of the Mississippi Association of College and Research Libraries, an ACRL chapter.

From 1975 to 1977 Werking was reference librarian and university archivist at Lawrence University, Appleton, Wisconsin, where he served as secretary-treasurer of the Wisconsin Association of Academic Libraries. In the 1960s he taught history at Northland College, Wisconsin, and spent a year as personnel staffing specialist for the U.S. Civil Service Commission in Indianapolis.

Werking earned a Ph.D. in history from the University of Wisconsin in 1973. In 1975, as a postdoctoral fellow in a special program sponsored by the Council on Library Resources, he received a master’s in librarianship from the University of Chicago. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Evansville and a master’s degree in U.S. history from the University of Wisconsin.

Active within ALA and ACRL, Werking served as chair of ACRL’s Continuing Education Committee in 1977-79. He is currently a member of the RTSD Resources Section’s Library Materials Price Index Committee.

The author of many articles in such journals as Business History Review, Administrative Science Quarterly, College & Research Libraries, and Library Trends,Werking has also written a book, The Master Architects: Building the United States Foreign Service, 1890-1913, which placed second in the Frederick Turner Prize competition for best book on American history in 1977.

PEOPLE IN THE NEWS

Jessie C. Smith,director of library services for the Frederick Douglass Library at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Princess Anne, will spend two months in Zambia as a library consultant. Her appointment is part of a five-year U.S. Agency for International Development funded project. Smith will assist with the coordination of library services and document delivery to several Zambian provinces and will help develop a central resource center.

Pamela Kay Carver is the new cataloging librarian at Southwest Texas State University, San Marcos.

Leroy D. Chadwick has been appointed serials librarian at the University of Washington Health Sciences Library, Seattle.

Lynda Claassenhas been named head of the Department of Special Collections, University of California at San Diego.

Robert Malinowskyhas been appointed general manager and senior editor of Libraries Unlimited, Littleton, Colorado.

Susan S. Mottuis now the original cataloger in special collections at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore.

Bruce L. Ohrlundhas been appointed head of technical services for St. Ambrose College Library, Davenport, Iowa.

Connie T. Okadahas been appointed head of the University of Washington Art Library, Seattle.

Edward T. O’Neillhas joined OCLC’s Office of Research, Dublin, Ohio, as a senior research scientist.

RETIREMENTS

Frederick Arnold, reference librarian at Princeton University, has retired after 29 years of sevice.

Learned Bulmanhas retired in February after 34 years of active librarianship. He began as a young adult librarian in the Detroit Public Library and came to the East Orange (N.J.) Public Library in 1951 as supervisor of young adult services. He retired from East Orange in 1976 as library director. In 1977 he joined the County College of Morris in New Jersey as supervisor of technical services and has now retired from there as associate director for public and technical services.

Dorothy Crawford, order librarian at Princeton University, has retired after 30 years of service.

Ruth Simons Nicholson, senior manuscript reference librarian in the Library of Congress Manuscript Reading Room, retired on January 31 after over 15 years in the Manuscript Division.

DEATHS

Robert Ennen, director of libraries at Loyola University of Chicago since 1972, died in Evanston on March 12. He previously served as assistant director for technical services at the University of Notre Dame from 1961 to 1972. A native of Detroit, Ennen received master’s degrees in library science and classical studies as well as a doctorate in library science from the University of Michigan. He was also a graduate of John Carroll University, Cleveland, Ohio.

Stanley Pillsbury, cataloger in the Library of Congress Geography and Map Division for 25 years until his retirement in 1976, died on January 5 in Bethesda, Maryland’. ■ ■
