Jennifer Cargill

Jennifer Cargillhas been appointed associate director of libraries for technical processing, Texas Tech University, Lubbock, effective June 1.

Cargill has been head acquisitions librarian al Miami University Libraries, Oxford, Ohio: assistant science librarian at Miami; anc health sciences librariar and assistant acquisitions librarian at the University of Houston, She has an MLS frorr Louisiana State University, a bachelor’s degree from Louisiana Teel University, and a master’s in education from Miami University.

Cargill currently serves on ALA Council, the LAMA Publications Committee, and is now chair of the H.W. Wilson Library Periodical Award Committee and the Ohio Inter-University Library Council Technical Services Group. Since 1982 she has been a member of the Editorial Board of College & Research Libraries News, and has served on the Reference and Subscription Books Review

Committee and the OHIONET Acquisitions Council.

The author of numerous books and articles, Cargill is currently co-editor of Technicalities.

Sidney Verba

Sidney Verba,Clarence Dillon Professor of International Affairs and associate dean of the Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences for Undergraduate Education, has been appointed to succeed Oscar Handlin as Carl H. Pforzheimer university professor and director of the Harvard University Library, effective July 1.

The Pforzheimer Chair is reserved for outstanding scholars who have demonstrated serious and continuing interest in library problems. Those named to the chair must share the donor’s belief that the University Library is a focal point in the learning process and an essential factor in research.

Verba, a political scientist and authority on comparative politics and American voter behavior, has been on the Harvard faculty since 1972. Among his books are The Changing American Voter (with Norman Nie and John Petrocik, 1976) and Vietnam and the Silent Majority (with Milton J. Rosenberg and Philip E. Converse, 1972).

Retirements

SamuelM. Boone, head of Newspapers and Microforms at Duke University, retired on February 29 after 38 years of service to academic libraries.

PhyllisH. Carter, catalog librarian at Duke University, retired on February 29 after 15 years of service.

ShirleyB. Hesslein, director of the Lockwood Library at the State University of New York at Buffalo since 1981, retired on January 19. She had been at SUNY-Buffalo for 15 years. Prior to her term as Lockwood’s director she was head of the Reference Department and associate director of the SUNY-Buffalo Health Sciences Library, where she received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Librarianship.

Jean Blackwell Hutson,chief of the Schömberg Center for Research in Black Culture, New York Public Library, retired on February 29 after 36 years of service at the Center.

Charles Koch,library director at Northwest Missouri State University, Maryville, retired this spring.

PhyllisA. Richmond has retired as dean of the Matthew A. Baxter School of Information and Library Science, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, effective June 30. She has accepted a part-time faculty position at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, University of California, Los Angeles.

Charlotte Spence,Indo-Pacific bibliographer at the University of California, Los Angeles, retired on April 1.

Deaths

Edgar Hugh Behymer,former dean and professor emeritus of the Palmer Graduate Library School, Long Island University, died March 12 at his home in Hartsville, Massachusetts. He began his career as a law librarian and served as librarian at Bethany College, West Virginia, from 1942 to 1955. At Long Island University he began as librarian at C. W. Post Center, and later became dean of the newly formed Graduate Library School. He retired in 1972.

Ranjan Borra,senior reference librarian in the Southern Asia Section of the Library of Congress Asian Division, died on February 13 in Washington.

Sylvia Merritt,long time reference librarian in the University of California, Los Angeles, Law Library, died February 22 after a long illness.
