• ALA-LC Romanizatíon Tables: Transliteration Schemes for Non-Roman Scripts, edited by Randall K. Bariy (September 1991), brings together all the romanizatíon tables that have appeared over the past 20 years in the Library of Congress Cataloging Service Bulletin. Anyone who needs to transliterate words, proper names, titles, or terms from any one of 140 nonroman scripts will appreciate this guide. Instructions for encoding special characters (such as an apostrophe) or character modifiers (diacritics) in machine-readable form have been added to this edition. • The Beethoven Compendium: A Guide to Beethoven’s Life and Music, edited by Barry Cooper (351 pages, December 1991), brings together information on every significant aspect of Beethoven and his music. Of notable reference use are: a calendar of the composer’s life, works, and related events; his family tree; a who’s who of Beethoven’s contemporaries; a catalogue and description of each musical work; and bibliographical and biographical essays. • Books in Russia and the Soviet Union, Past and Present, edited by Miranda Beaven and Wojciech Zalewski (276 pages, August 1991), has been published as volume 3 in the Otto Harrassowitz series on Publishing, Bibliography, Libraries, and Archives in Russia and Eastern Europe. Like the previous two volumes on Poland and Czechoslovakia, this book is an overview of the present organization of publishing and bibliography in the Soviet Union. • Brazil in Reference Books, 1965-1989: An Annotated Bibliography, by Ann Hartness (361 pages, 1991), contains more than 1,650 descriptions of books, pamphlets, and serials on Brazilian arts, social sciences, and humanities. Most of the publications are in Portuguese, so the author’s English summaries are most helpful. Author and subject indexes provide access. Copies are available for $39.50 from Scarecrow Press, P.O. • Carriage and Wagon: Index of United States Patents, 1790-1910: State and City, by Susan Green (818 pages, 1991), contains 40,500 entries on horse-drawn carriages, wagons, sleighs, accessories, and the machinery for making them. Each entry gives the inventor’s name, the invention’s name, the date issued, patent number, state, and the city residence of the inventor. The index provides easy access to the abstracts in The Official Gazette of the United States Patent Office, published weekly by the Patent Office since 1872, and the yearly reports published from 1836 to 1872. • Coastal and Maritime Archaeology: A Bibliography, by Jordan E. Kerber (400 pages, 1991), lists more than 2,800 sources on indigenous peoples who have hunted, gathered, and fished along world shorelines. The book is divided into four sections: northeastern North American cultures, cultures elsewhere, shellfish and shell middens worldwide, and history and ethnography. • The Colorado Atlas and Gazetteer (104 pages, 1991), is the 18th in DeLorme Mapping’s excellent series of state atlases. If you have not yet purchased these for your library, do your atlas users a favor and get all of them. The maps give enough detail to satisfy backpackers, equestrians, and bikers. Other recent state atlases survey Oregon, Illinois, Michigan, and Minnesota; Idaho and North Carolina are scheduled for 1992. Don’t get lost without them! • Dance Film and Video Guide, compiled by Dierdre Towers (233 pages, October 1991), catalogs every recorded dance performance, from Baryshnikov’s Sinatra Suite to avant-garde dances and ballroom instruction. Completely updated since the last edition in 1986, the guide contains a brief description of each film or video, a complete list of personnel, and the most pertinent performance data. Many are accompanied by black-and-white photos. Indexes provide access by dance style, purpose, geographic location, choreographer, composer, director, dancer, and dance company. • Directory of Electronic Journals, Newsletters and Academic Discussion Lists, compiled by Michael Strangelove and Diane Kovacs, and edited by Ann Okerson (173 pages, July 1991), is a comprehensive fisting of serials and discussion forums available through Bitnet, the Internet, and affiliated networks. A brief description of each service is provided, along with information on how to subscribe or submit material. The variety of topics is wide and eclectic; you will find serious journals like the ArtsNet Review and New Horizons in Adult Education and fanzines like Between the Lines (a monthly digest about Debbie Gibson and her music) and The Purple Thunderbolt of Spode (an e-mail magazine for those who worship OTIS, “the ancient Sumerian god/dess of fife”). • The Evolution of Library Automation: Management Issues and Future Perspectives, edited by Gary M. Highlights include “The Library Perspective,” by Donald Riggs; “Libraries and Computing Centers,” by Catherine A. Quinlan; and “Reactions from an Information Manager,” by Patricia Senn Breivik. • Horror Film Directors, 1931-1990, by Dennis Fischer (877 pages, December 1991), provides a complete filmography, career summary, critical assessment, and insightful background information on 51 major and 48 minor directors. An excellent analysis of an often misunderstood genre, this volume maintains strict standards and distinguishes between high-calibre drama and noncere-bral splatter films with flashy special effects. An appendix that discusses “classic horror films by non-horror directors” (like Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining”) and a qualitatively annotated bibliography make Fischer’s book essential for serious film collections. • The Integrated Library: Encouraging Access to Multimedia Materials, by Jean Weihs (168 pages, 2d ed., September 1991), explains the procedures for integrating book and nonbook materials together in a browsing multimedia collection. The author explains each part of the intershelving process, from the proper use, care, handling, and storage of nonbook materials to the importance of library staff involvement and promoting the active interest of the patrons in maintaining such a collection. • Living Wills and Durable Power of Attorney: Advance Directive Legislation and Issues, by Pat Milmoe McCarrick (20 pages, September 1991), has been revised as Scope Note 2 of the National Reference Center for Bioethics Literature at Georgetown University. Focusing on the Patient Self-Determination Act of 1990, which went into effect on December 1,1991, this scope note offers a bibliography of the literature on living wills and includes sample forms and citations to journal articles, government documents, and relevant book chapters. • The National Directory of Bulletin Board Systems 1992, by Patrick R. Dewey (305 pages, December 1991), will be useful to those who are already proficient users of electronic bulletin board systems (BBS). Modem addicts in Chicago, Georgia, Ohio, Kentucky, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Oregon, Washington (D.C.), and Ottawa should appreciate the lists of local phone numbers for systems in their areas, but the author also provides topical lists (desktop publishing, gay, health, scouting) and board listings by type (Bitnet, IBM BBS, Paranet International, Unix, Wildcat, Telegard, and others). If you are a novice to all this BBS confusion, you should first avail yourself of Michael A. Banks’s The Modem Reference (2d ed., Brady, 1991) to determine how involved you want to become. • Opera Performances in Video Format: A Checklist of Commercially Released Recordings, by Charles R. Croissant (144 pages, November 1991), lists directors, conductors, and cast members along with the location and date of performance, citations to reviews, details on production, distributor, and video presentation. Individual operas are listed under the composer’s name, while appendices supply information on recitals and other programs featuring excerpts from operas. • The Oxford Dictionary of New Words, compiled by Sara Tulloch (322 pages, November 1991), is an informative and readable guide to some 2,000 words and phrases that have appeared in the news during the past decade. The dictionaiy not only defines them, but explains how they came into prominence, drawing on the published and unpublished resources of the Oxford English Dictionary and the word-files and databases of the Oxford Dictionary Department. Icons designating 11 different topics (drugs, music, science, politics, youth culture, etc.) appear next to each term for quick subject identification. • Photograph Preservation and the Research Library (56 pages, October 1991) contains five papers presented at an October 1990 Research Libraries Group symposium on the preservation of large photographic collections. The topics include: technical aspects of photograph preservation (J ames M. Reilly); assessing preservation needs (Debbie Hess Norris); photograph duplication (Steven T. Puglia); implementing a grant-funded negative- duplication program (Paula De Stefano); and the delicate art of juggling preservation and access needs (Julia Van Haaften). • Public Utilities: An Annotated Guide to Information Sources, by Anne C. Bibliographic guides, glossaries and dictionaries, directories, abstracting and indexing services, databases, regulatory reporting services, textbooks, periodicals, conference proceedings, and standards are described. • Research Issues in Electronic Records (37 pages, November 1991) is based on the results of a meeting, sponsored by the Minnesota Historical Society, held in Washington, D.C. in January 1991 to determine a national agenda for research in the archival management of electronic records. The report calls on the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) to address such questions as: How can electronic records be managed to meet archival requirements? Can affordable, feasible guidelines be developed for saving a range of kinds of information produced electronically? How can information accessible on particular computer systems be saved and used as such systems are replaced? • Shadowcatchers: A Directory of Women in California Photography, 1900-1920, by Peter E. Palmquist (352pages, October 1991), extends the coverage given in his previous Shadowcatchers volume, published in 1990, on California women photographers prior to 1901. This directory provides a life chronology of 1,065 women, accompanied by essays, portraits, and representative examples of their photography.
