Mohammed M. Aman

Mohammed M. Aman, dean of the Palmer Graduate Library School, Long Island University, has been appointed dean of the School of Library Science, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

At Long Island, Aman helped to introduce a six-year degree program, an undergraduate program in information studies, a specialization in business librarianship, and foreign exchange programs.

Before joining the faculty at Long Island, Aman was director of the division of Library and Information Science at St. John s University, New York. During his deanship, St. John’s received its first national ALA accreditation.

Aman has also served on the library faculties of the Pratt Institute, Duquesne University, and Allegheny Community College, and has worked as a research assistant at Knowledge Availability Systems Center in Pittsburgh and as a reference librarian at the Egyptian National Library.

He holds a B.A. from Cairo University, Egypt, an M.S.(L.S.) from Columbia University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh.

An active member of the American Library Association, he has served as chair of the International Relations Roundtable, as a member of the International Relations Committee and the Grants Committee of the Library Education Division, and as a member of the ACRL Publications in Librarianship Editorial Board.

He has served as consultant to UNESCO in Bahrain, UNIDO in Algeria, U.S. AID in Upper Volta, and to the governments of Kuwait, Egypt, Libya, and Morocco, and to academic and special libraries in the United States.

Allan J. Dyson

Allan J. Dyson is the new university librarian at the University of California, Santa Cruz cam- pus. Dyson goes to Santa Cruz from the University of California, Berkeley, where he has been head of the Moffitt Undergraduate Library since 1971.

At Santa Cruz, Dyson will direct a staff of 100 employees, oversee an annual budget of $2,900,000, and super- vise the growth and management of library collections that now number 567,000 vol- umes.

After graduating from Harvard in 1964 with B.a. in government, Dyson joined the U.S. Army as a lieutenant and served as chief of the Administrative Services Offices at Watertown Arsenal in Massachusetts from 1964 to 1966. He earned his M.S. degree in Library Science from the Simmons College School of Library Science in 1968 and joined the staff of the Columbia University Libraries as as- sistant to the director, a position he held until his appointment at Berkeley in 1971.

ACRL members know Dyson well for his service as editor of College & Research Libraries News from January 1973 to December 1974. He served on the editorial board of College & Research Libraries during the same period and became a member of the editorial board of Choice in 1975. He is currently chair of the Choice board and was a member of the Search Committee that selected Jay Martin Poole as the new editor of Choice.

Graham R. Hill

Graham R. Hill has been appointed librarian of McMaster University Libraries, Hamilton, Canada.

Hill began his career at McMaster University in 1971 as public ser- vices librarian, pro- gressed to director, Di- vision of Archives and Special Collections, and in 1974 assumed the added responsibilities of collections librarian. As associate librarian for collection development he has had primary re- sponsibility for adminis- tering the library’s ac- quisitions funds of $1.6 million in 1978-79.

A native of England, Hill received his B.A. de- gree from the University of Newcastle-upon- Tyne, an M.A. from Lancaster University, and an M.L.S. from the University of Western Ontario. In 1977-78 he was a Council on Library Re- sources Academic Management Intern at the Indiana University Libraries.

John G. Lorenz

John G. Lorenz is retiring as executive direc- tor of the Association of Research Libraries at the end of 1979. He began his career as a librarian in the Queens (New York) Public Library and later served in the public li- braries of Schenectady, New York, and Grand Rapids, Michigan. From 1946 to 1957 he was assistant state li- brarian in Michigan. In 1957 he joined the staff of the Library Services Branch of the U.S. Office of Education, where he rose to the position of director of the Division of Library

Services and received a Distinguished Service Award from the secretary of Health, Education and Welfare.

In 1965 Lorenz became Deputy Librarian of Congress. During his tenure of office, the library developed the National Program for Acquisitions and Cataloging, the Machine-Readable Cataloging program, and Cataloging in Publication. He was responsible for planning and building the Madi- son Library, and during most of 1975 he served as acting Librarian of Congress.

In 1976 he retired as Deputy Librarian of Congress and became executive director of the Association of Research Libraries. At ARL he helped secure passage of Title II-C of the Higher Education Act for strengthening research library resources and obtained additional foundation support for the ARL Office of Management Studies and the Center for Chinese Research Materials.

Althea D. Aschmann has been appointed cataloger in the Andover-Harvard Theological Library.

Richard Ashford, a doctoral student in the D.L.S. program at Columbia University, will join the faculty of the School of Library Science, Simmons College, in January 1980.

Julie Banks has been named loan librarian, Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, Texas.

Daniel W. Barthell has been promoted to head, Search Section, Acquisitions Department, Northwestern University Library, Evanston, Illinois.

John H. Brandeau is now head of the Audio-Visual Department, Mercy College Libraries, Westchester County, New York.

Maria Brech is now librarian of the Yorktown Heights Branch Campus, Mercy College Libraries, Westchester County, New York.

Sally Buchanan has been appointed conservation officer, University Libraries, Stanford University.

Sharon H. Byrd is assistant cataloger, Library, Davidson College, North Carolina.

Karen L. Carlson has been promoted to head of the Department Library Cataloging Section, Harvard University.

Laraine Correll has been appointed director of special collections, George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia.

Edwin M. Cortez has been appointed assistant professor of library science, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Laura Dankner has been named music librarian at Loyola University, New Orleans, Louisiana.

Elleen A. Derey is reference librarian, Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

Jan Dommer is education librarian at Bowling Green State University, Ohio.

Eilen Dorschner has been appointed assistant science librarian for chemistry and chemical engineering (half-time), Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston.

Kathleen A. Dowhan is the Andover-Harvard Theological Library’s newest cataloger.

Ruth Anne Evans has been named head of collection development, Schaffer Library, Union College, Schenectady, New York.

Terry Ferl has been appointed serials cataloger, University of California, Santa Cruz.

Ruth Gibbs has begun work as associate university librarian for research and instructional services, University of California, Los Angeles.

Patricia Gibney has been appointed serials librarian, Princeton University.

Jacqueline Glick is the new interlibrary loan librarian, Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee.

Martha Benzer Goldberg has been appointed reference librarian, Norris Medical Library, University of Southern California Health Sciences Campus, Los Angeles.

Mary Lou Goodyear is reference librarian, Stephens College, Columbia, Missouri.

Ellin Greene will join the faculty of the Graduate Library School, University of Chicago, in January 1980 as associate professor and dean of students.

Janet Gregor has been named head of technical processes, Schaffer Library, Union College, Schenectady, New York.

J. Brian Haley has been appointed catalog librarian and head of technical services, Ursinus College Library, Collegeville, Pennsylvania.

Jean Hamrick has been named assistant director for automation and bibliographic control, General Libraries, University of Texas at Austin.

Sheila K. Hart has been appointed head, Public Services Department, Harvard College Library.

Nancy R. Hearst is now librarian, John King Fairbank Center for East Asian Research, Harvard University.

Marlene S. Heroux is serials librarian, State University of New York, Binghamton.

Carolyn Hilles is monographic cataloger, University Libraries, State University of New York, Albany.

Dolores Hoelle has been appointed engineering librarian, Princeton University.

Michael Homan has joined the staff of the Corporate Technical Library, Upjohn Company, Kalamazoo, Michigan, as head of information services.

Gary A. Hunt has been appointed head, Archives and Special Collections Department, Ohio University Libraries, Athens.

Bonnie Jean Jackson has been named personnel librarian, University of Georgia Library.

Timothy V. Johnson has been appointed African-American Studies reference librarian, Northwestern University Library, Evanston, Illinois.

Douglas Jones has been appointed reference librarian, Science-Engineering Library, University of Arizona.

Sheryle R. Jones is reference librarian, Memphis State University Libraries, Tennessee.

Jean Kamerman has been appointed SOL- INET coordinator, John C. Pace Library, University of West Florida, Pensacola.

Nancy S. Klath has been appointed assistant university librarian for technical services, Princeton University.

Jane M. Kropa is now cataloger, Eden- Webster Libraries, a joint library serving Webster College and Eden Theological Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri.

William J. Kurmey will become dean of the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Library Science on January 1, 1980.

Sul H. Lee has been appointed dean, University Libraries, University of Oklahoma, Norman.

He was formerly Director of University Libraries at Oklahoma.

Marion Holena Levine has been named head reference librarian, Countway Library, Harvard University.

Mildred Lowe has been appointed acting director, Division of Library and Information Science, St. John’s University, Jamaica, New York.

Mary A. McCreadie has been named to the position of cataloger, Northwestern University Library, Evanston, Illinois.

Terrence Mech is instructional/public services librarian, Tusculum College Library, Greeneville, Tennessee.

Elaine Moore has joined the staff of the University of Arizona, Tucson, as map reference librarian.

Richard E. Moore has been selected chairman of the Interinstitutional Library Council of the Oregon State System of Higher Education.

Eleanor T. Munn has been appointed principal cataloger, Case Western Reserve University Libraries, Cleveland, Ohio.

Mary L. Nieball has been named dean of library services, San Jacinto College District, Pasadena, Texas.

Sherelyn Ogden has been named book conservator, the New England Document Conservation Center, Andover, Massachusetts.

Hugh M. Olmsted has accepted the position of head of the Slavic Department in the College Library, Harvard University.

Mark Palkovic has been appointed humanities/music cataloger, Auburn University Libraries, Alabama.

Pamela Palmer is head, Engineering Library, Memphis State University Libraries, Tennessee.

Alexandra Papazoglou has been named cataloger, Harvard College Library.

RETIREMENTS

Catherine L. Binderup, assistant librarian for reference service in the Francis A. Countway Library of Medicine, Harvard University, retired at the end of June.

Rita C. English, head of reference services for the past thirteen years at Cuyahoga Community College, Western Campus, Cleveland, Ohio, has retired.

Margaret Bolstad Faust, reference librarian at Stephens College for twenty years, retired at the end of the 1978-1979 school year.

Frances Lauman, the Cornell University Libraries’ first reference librarian, retired after thirty-three years of service on June 30.

Margaret Ludington, head of the Rare Book Cataloging Division, Yale University Library, New Haven, Connecticut, has retired after more than forty years of service.

William B. Ready retired as librarian of McMaster University Libraries, Hamilton, Canada, June 30, after twelve years as head of the McMaster system.

Ruth H. Rockwood of the Florida State University School of Library Science is retiring after twenty-six years on the faculty.

Charles S. Woodbury, circulation librarian in the Andover-Harvard Theological Library for the past seventeen-years, retired from his position on July 31.

DEATHS

Wilhelm Moll died June 16. He was director of the Claude Moore Health Sciences Library and of the former Medical Library at the University of Virginia since 1962. Thomas M. Schmid, assistant director for technical services, University of Utah Libraries, died May 15 as the result of an automobile accident.

Emily Philips Scott, head catalog librarian, Georgia Southern College Library, Statesboro, Georgia, died on April 25.

Patrick Wreath, chief bibliographer of the University of North Carolina Library at Chapel Hill, died May 18 after a long illness. Contributions in his honor may be sent to the Patrick J.
