Book repair workshop
The Campbell Center for Historic Preservation Studies will offer “Book Collections Maintenance and Repair Workshop” from August 14 —17, 2002, in Mount Carroll, Illinois. This four-day workshop is designed to improve the skills of collections conservators who work on circulating book collections. The curriculum is based on the book repair procedure manual prepared by the University of Iowa Libraries’ Conservation Department, and will be taught by Sally Hansen.
Course registration, including accommodations at the center, costs $640 (scholarships are available). Class size is limited to ten. For more information, contact the Campbell Center for Historic Preservation Studies, 203 East Seminary, Mount Carroll, IL 61053; phone: (815) 244-1173; fax: (815) 244-1619; URL: http://www.campbellœnter. org.
CHIN Web site redesign
The Canadian Heritage Information Network (CHIN) has scheduled the launch of its newly redesigned Web site for May 1, 2002. The augmented Web site will build on strengths of the present one, plus add new content devoted to developing the skills necessary for creating and managing digital content, improved navigation tools, and a sitewide search engine. Both former and new content will be available free-of-charge to everyone, including non-CHIN members. A user name and password are no longer required.
The new Web site will retain the previous URL at http://www.chin.gc.ca.
DLF benchmark
The Digital Library Federation (DLF) has produced and endorsed Benchmark for Digital Reproductions of Monographs and Serials. This document identifies the minimum technical specifications for achieving fidelity when creating digital masters of printed library materials. Digital masters are intended to be faithful reproductions of the original source documents, and should be complete, provide quality images, maintain original page order, and support production of a printed page facsimile in the original size. The benchmark also supports the creation of structural and administrative metadata, persistence (long-term access), and interoperability.
The Benchmark is available free-of-charge at http://www.diglib.org/standards/bmarkfin. htm.
SOLINET workshops
The Southeastern Library Network, Inc. (SOLINET) will offer two workshops late this spring. “Audiovisual Collection Management,” taught by Alan Lewis of the Special Media Archives Services Division of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), will be held on May 23, 2002 at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. ‘Surviving the Big One,” taught by Michael Trinkley of the Chicora Foundation, will be held June II, 2002, at the Tower Road Branch Library in Gainesville, Florida. In this instance, the Big One is a hurricane.
Registration for each workshop costs $95 for SOLINET members or $135 for nonmembers, with discounts available for early registration. For more information, contact Vanessa Richardson at SOLINET, 1438 West Peachtree Street, NW, Suite 200, Atlanta, GA 30309-2955; phone: (800) 999-8558; e-mail: vanessa_ richardson@solinet.net; URL: http://www. solinet.net.
Correction-.In the April 2002 column, I reported that Melinex 516 polyester film was no longer in production. This report was inaccurate. DuPont, the current owner of the Melinex product line, still has it in production, although they have discontinued Mylar D.
