Salvage at a glance

The Western Association for Art Conservation (WAAC) has reprinted the May 1997 issue of the WAAC Newsletter (v,19-.no.2), which contains Betty Walsh’s article, “Salvage Operations for Water Damaged Archival Collections: A Second Glance.” This issue includes the 17" x 22" “Salvage at a Glance” chart, printed on synthetic paper that is impervious to water, UV radiation, and hard use.

Copies of this single issue with chart cost $10 for one, $8 each for 10-19 copies, or $5 each for 20 or more copies. To order, contact Chris Stavroudis, 1272 North Flores Street, Los Angeles, CA 90069-2904; e-mail: cstavrou@ ix.netcom.com.

Digital images of art

The final report on “Digital Imagery for Works of Art,” an invitational workshop jointly sponsored by the National Science Foundation, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the Harvard University Art Museums in November 2001, is available. The purpose of the conference was to bring together scientists who conduct digital imagery research, scholars in the visual arts, and practitioners in related areas of the arts, e.g., curators and conservators, to discuss a mutually beneficial research agenda. Participants considered how the scientists might better serve the needs of scholars and how the needs of scholars might point scientific research in challenging directions.

The report is free-of-charge in HTML or PDF at http://www.dli2.nsf.gov/mellon/report.html.

Preserving Canadian heritage

The Canadian Conservation Institute has developed “Preserving My Heritage,” an interactive Web site for the general public about preserving family heirlooms and history. The site provides advice about caring for 37 different types of household objects on fact sheets or while touring a 3-D virtual house, a tour of the CCI conservation labs, an online game called Preservation Quest!, some “amazing facts” about conservation treatments, a gallery of before and after images, and links to other preservation resources.
