Malcolm Getz
Malcolm Getz,associate professor of economics, has been named director of the Vanderbilt University Libraries, Nashville, effective January
1984. Getz is the author of Public Libraries: An Economic View, published in 1980 by Johns Hopkins University.
He came to Vanderbilt in 1973 as assistant professor of economics. He has a bachelor’s degree in economics from Williams College and a Ph.D. from Yale.
Getz conducted an investigation of public libraries as a member of the Research Staff of the
National Bureau of Economic Research in 1977-1978.
David Phillip Jensenhas been named director of libraries at Hope College, Holland, Michigan, effective in June. He will succeed Harry Boonstra, director of libraries since 1977, who plans to return to full-time teaching at Hope.
Jensen is completing final work on a doctorate in library science from the University of North Carolina. He has most recently been employed as a parttime technical information specialist for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Prior to that position, Jensen supervised interns and staff at Chapel Hill who were under contract to the EPA. His other experience includes serving as director of library services at Greensboro College (1970-1978) and as assistant reference librarian at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
A graduate of Greensboro College, Jensen also holds an MLS from the University of North Carolina. He has taught library science at the University of North Carolina and North Carolina Central University. In 1975-1977 he was chair of the College and University Section of the North Carolina Library Association.
MaryF. Lenox, associate professor of library science, has been appointed dean of the School of
Mary F. Lenox
Library and Informational Science at the University of Missouri, Columbia, effective March 1. She has been at UMC since 1978 and was responsible for its school librarianship study program. She has also taught courses in media center administration, collection development, and multi-media resources.
Lenox currently serves on the ALA Young Adult Services Division’s Research
Committee. She has a doctorate in education from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, an MLS from Rosary College, and a bachelor’s degree from Chicago State University. She has been a school librarian and media specialist in the Chicago Public School System, and a faculty member at Governors State University and the National College of Education.
Lenox is a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and is a 1982 Kellogg National Fellow.
Sharon J. Rogers
SharonJ. Rogers, vice-president/presidentelect of ACRL, has been named university librarian of George Washington University effective July 9. She has served as associate dean of Bowling Green State University Libraries, Ohio, since 1980.
Other positions she has held include head of bibliographic instruction at the University of Toledo (1977-1980), instructor in the Division of Social Sciences at Alfred University (1972-1977), and head of government documents at Washington
State University (1966-1969).
Rogers will begin her term as ACRL president after ALA’s Annual Conference in Dallas this June. As vice-president she currently chairs the ACRL Conference Program Planning Committee for 1985 and represents ACRL on the ALA Appointments Committee, the ALA Planning and Budget Assembly, and the ALA Conference Program Planning Committee for 1985. She also chairs the ACRL Task Force on Academic Libraries and Higher Education and the BIS Bibliographic Liaison Project Advisory Committee. In 1980-1981 she was chair of the Bibliographic Instruction Section.
In 1976 Rogers earned a doctorate in library science from Washington State University. Her MLS is from the University of Minnesota. She has written articles on higher education, bibliographic instruction, and sociology for the AAHE Bulletin, Library Trends, and Teaching Sociology.
Raymond F. Vondran

Raymond F. Vondranhas been appointed dean of the School of Library and Information Science at the Catholic University of America, effective Janu-
ary 1. He succeeds Elizabeth W. Stone, who retired after 11 years as chief administrative officer (see p. 198).
Vondran received his doctorate in library science from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1976 and came to the Catholic University as an assistant professor of library and information science in the same year.
In 1977 he became associate chairman, and in
1981, when the department received school status, he was appointed associate dean. He was made associate professor in 1982.
Vondran is vice president/president-elect of the Library Education Section of the Catholic Library Association. In 1983 he became a member of the Z39 Technical Report Committee of the American National Standards Institute. He edited the proceedings of the 46th annual meetings of the American Society for Information Science (1983) and has published articles on network development, technical communications, and collection development. He holds a master’s degree in history from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

People in the News
CharlesD. Churchwell, dean of library services for Washington University, St. Louis, has been elected vice president of the Board of Directors of the Council on Library Resources. The appointment carries a 5-year term. An active member of the Council, Churchwell has been a member of its Board since 1976. He has been especially involved with the Academic Library Administrative Internship Program.
Retirements
NancyB. Boone retired on December 31 from the Catalog Department of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, following 30 years of service. She was head of catalog maintenance at the time of her retirement.
MarjorieC. Dennin, director of learning resources for the Annandale Campus of Northern Virginia Community College, retired on December 31 after 18 years of service. She had served on several ACRL committees, including the Legislation Committee, the Standards and Accreditation Committee, and the CJCLS Nominating Committee.
Edward Miller,dean of the University of Missouri School of Library and Informational Science, retired on January 1 after 10 years of service. He is now in Denver consulting and teaching at the University of Denver School of Librarianship.
Yoshi Nakamura,cataloger in the East Asiatic Library of the University of California, Berkeley, retired on December 30 after 23 years of service.
Doris New,head of serials at the University of California, Irvine, retired in March after 11 years of service.
Elizabeth Stone

ElizabethW. Stone, chief administrative officer of the School of Library and Information Science at Catholic University for 11 years and ALA president in 1981-1982, retired last August 31. She holds the title of dean emerita.
Now active as chair of ALA’s National Library Week Committee, Stone has also been active in ALA Council and the Professional Ethics Committee. She also served as president of the D.C. Library Association (1966-1967), executive director of CLENE (1975-1979), and president of the Association of American Library Schools (1974).
Stone has been at Catholic University since 1962 when she was appointed assistant to the Chair of the then Graduate Department of Library Science. She had also held positions at Pasadena Public Library and the University of Dubuque.
Stone is currently a board member of the National Council on Quality Continuing Library and Information Science Education.
Rosalee Wright,reference and technical reports librarian at the University of California, Los Angeles, retired in September after 23 years of service at the UCLA Engineering and Mathematical Sciences Library.
Deaths
Daphne Clark,manager of the Aslib Professional Development Group, London, died in September. She was well known to American BI librarians because of her work with the Travelling Workshops Experiment.
Lura Currier,director of the University of Washington’s Pacific Northwest Bibliographic Center, Seattle, from 1971 to 1977, died on November 19. In 1959-1971 she had served as director of the Mississippi State Library Commission.
Kathleen Eads,reference librarian in the Humanities Library at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, for 23 years, died early this year.
Eleanor Johnson,reference librarian at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center, Tucson, died suddenly in January. She had been at the Center since 1971.
Mary Eugenia Morris,former acquisitions librarian at Western Carolina University, Cullowhee, for 21 years, died on January 25.
MarjorieA. Zumstein, psychological science librarian at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, died on February 7.
