Bruce K Andrew

Bruce K. Andrew, associate librarian at Butler Library, is one of two employees of Buffalo State College to receive 1990 Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence. The award carries with it an inscribed certificate and a medallion which can be worn at commencements, honors convocations, and academic ceremonies. Andrew, a reference librarian, has been with Butler Library since 1965. In 1975 he produced, wrote, and edited a 50- minute slide-sound program about children’s author Lois Lenski that has been shown extensively at New York schools and colleges. He acted as the librarian aboard SUNY Maritime College’s vessel which sailed from New York to Bremen, Germany, and Cork, Ireland, in the summer of 1971. He has a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Buffalo, an MLS from Syracuse University, and a master’s in English from Buffalo State.
Kenneth J. Bierman has assumed his duties as assistant university librarian for technical and automated services in the Oklahoma State University Libraries. His responsibilities include overall administration of the acquisitions, cataloging, access services, and automation departments. Bierman has extensively written, lectured, and consulted in these areas during the past 20 years. He has also been actively involved in professional associations. He has held elective positions as a member of the ALA Council from 1977-1981, as chair of the Information Science and Automation Section of the Library Information and Technology Association in 1977, and as a director-at-large on LITA’s executive board from 1978-1981. He has served for three years as a member of the board of trustees of the AMIGOS Bibliographic Council (1982-1985) and is currently serving a 3-year term as an AMI- GOS representative on the OCLC Users Council. Bierman received the Arizona Library Association’s Distinguished Service Award in 1989. Before coming to Oklahoma State University he served as assistant director for technical services and automation at the Tucson Public Library. Prior to that he was assistant director for planning and research at the University Libraries of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg from 1972 to 1975. He received his MLS from the University of Oklahoma in 1968, after which he served for four years as data processing coordinator at the Oklahoma Department of Libraries in Oklahoma City.
Kenneth J. Bierman
Suzanne Fedunok has been appointed to the newly created position of assistant director for information and research services at SUNY-Binghamton. Her former position was as assistant director for resource development at Columbia University, a position she held for 5 years. Prior to that, she worked in various capacities since 1977 in the science libraries at Columbia and for the American Mathematical Society from 1970 to 1977. She holds the MLS from the University of Michigan, where she also earned a master’s in Asian studies in 1970. Her bachelor’s from Bryn Mawr is in French and political science. She is a member of ALA, ALCTS, SLA, and the Society for Scholarly Publishing. She has authored papers and served as a consultant on scientific information and has published, taught and consulted on collection assessment. She edited the latest edition of Columbia’sCollection Development Policy Statement.
Maryruth Glogowski
Maryruth F. Glogowski, associate director of library services at Buffalo State College, is one of 5 faculty and staff members selected by their campus peers as recipients of 1990 New York State/ United University Professions Excellence Awards. The awards are given in recognition of sustained, outstanding performance and superior service to the State University of New York system, and each is accompanied by a check for $3,000. Glogowsky, who graduated magna cum laude in English from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1973 and received her MLS there in 1974, began her professional career as acting map librarian at the science and engineering library of the State University of New York at Buffalo. She has published extensively on topics in training and bibliography and has received several grants to pursue her interests in those areas. She has served on a number of state library committees and is currently chairing a regional automation committee.
Victoria A. Montavon
Victoria A. Montavon has been named library director at St. Joseph’s University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Montavon had served as associate director of library services at Rider College since 1986. Prior to that she was assistant to the director of libraries at Temple University (1985-1986), head librarian at Lindenwood College (1980-1984), library director at Carlow College (1977- 1980), and head librarian at Notre Dame College (1976-1977). She is currently a doctoral candidate in English at
Temple University. Montavon has a master’s in English from the University of Pittsburgh, an MLS from Case Western Reserve University, and a bachelor’s degree from Ohio State University (1969). An active member of the Chapters Council of ACRL, Montavon is currently chair of Chapters Council and serves on several Chapters Council committees. She has served as the Delaware Valley Chapter liaison to Chapters Council (1987-1990) and has been active in library consortia in New Jersey, Missouri, Pennsylvania, and Ohio.
Mary Joyce Pickett has been named the 4th library director in the 103-year history of Illinois Benedictine College. She came to IBC from the Illinois Institute of Technology, where she spent 6 years at the Paul V. Galvin Library, first as a reference and interlibrary loan librarian and later as head of access services. She was Schaffner Project librarian at Northwestern University from 1983 to 1984, and prior to that worked at Augustana College, initially as reference librarian and subsequently as director of public services. Pickett has an MLS from the University of Illinois, a CAS in library management from the University of Chicago, and a bachelor’s degree from Simpson College. She has been active in the extended campus services section of ACRL and has chaired several committees.
Carolyn A. Sheehy
Carolyn A. Sheehy has been appointed director of Oesterle Library at North Central College, Naperville, Illinois. She previously served as head of the reference department at the University of Illinois in Chicago and prior to that was administrative curator of special collections at Newberry Library. Sheehy received a bachelor’s degree from Scripps College, a master’s degree from Mills College, and an MLS from Northern Illinois University. For 1989-1990, she was selected a Fellow in the Professional
Development Program sponsored by the libraries of Northwestern University, the University of Chicago, and the University of Illinois at Chicago. Active in ALA, Sheehy currently serves as chair of the reference service press award committee of RASD, chair of the consultants list subcommittee of the arts section of ACRL, and a member of the conference program committee of the systems and services section of LAMA. She has given presentations to the Midwest Archives conference, Theater Librarians Association, and ALA annual conference. Her publications have dealt with issues in archives and manuscripts, reference and information services, dance librarianship, and library management. She is currently completing her second one-year appointment to the Dance Advisory Panel of the Illinois Arts Council and her second term as an elected member of the Board of Directors of the Chicago Dance Coalition.

Mary Bopp, librarian for instruction at Indiana University Libraries, Bloomington, has been elected to the board of directors of the Congress on Research in Dance. CORD is an international organization which encourages research in all areas of dance, fosters the exchange of ideas, resources, and methodologies, and promotes the accessibility of research materials.
Lynn M. Fortney, marketing manager for the biomedical division of EBSCO Subscription Services, has been named a Distinguished Member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals. “Distinguished Member” is the Academy’s highest level, requiring contributions to the profession in the form of publication, teaching, continuing education, professional association speeches, presentations, committee participation, officer status, and conference attendance. Of the 1,453 Academy members, only 179 have achieved the Distinguished Member designation. Prior to joining EBSCO, Fortney was associated with the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Lister Hill Library for 7 years, serving primarily as associate director for public services. Previously, she spent 9 years on the staff of the health sciences library of the College of Community Health Sciences at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. She has published numerous articles on medical librarianship. Her MLS is from Emory University.
Salvador Guerena, reference librarian at the University of California Santa Barbara Library, has edited a newly published book on Latino Librarianship: A Handbook for Professionals (McFarland, 1990). The 260-page volume contains material on such topics as the changing Latino demographics, community analysis and needs assignments, recommended reference tooks, delivering effective reference services, Latino databases, collection development for specific sub-groups (such as Cuban Americans, Mexican Americans, Puertorriquenos), Hispanic archives, the book trade industry as it relates to Hispanics, and the history and role of REFORMA. An extensive bibliography on the “English-Only” movement is also included, as well as appendices that provide aids such as ALA’s guidelines on library services to Hispanics. This is Sal’s fourth book. He is a member of RASD and EMIERT as well as ACRL.
Alison E. Howardand Milton G. Ternbergare the recipients of the first Distinguished Librarian award given by the Librarians Association of the University of California, Berkeley division. Both received cash awards and citations for their excellence in librarianship and commitment to the profession. Howard, who joined the University of California at Berkeley in 1969, is head of the optometry library there. She was praised for many contributions to librarywide efforts through her leadership, resourcefulness, and willingness to assume additional responsibilities. Ternberg, head of the business and social science library, has been with UCB since 1983. His most recent contribution to the campus has been to serve as a key member of the committee charged with planning and developing the new business administration building and library.
Frederick G. Kilgour was inducted into the Ohio Library Association’s Hall of Fame in October. Kilgour is the founder of OCLC, of which he was the executive director and president from 1967 to 1980, while it grew from an intrastate network of 54 college and university libraries to an international network that serves more than 10,000 institutions. Kilgour began his distinguished career in librarianship in 1935 as an assistant in the circulation and reference department at Harvard College Library. He is currently distinguished research professor at the School of Library and Information Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Yvette Scheven, Africana bibliographer at the libraries of the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign, received the 1990 Conover-Porter Award last month for her Bibliographies for African Studies 1970-1986. The African Studies Association established this award in 1980 to honor outstanding achievement in Africana bibliography and reference guides. Scheven’s book is the culmination of 15 years’ work. It contains 3,277 citations, nearly all annotated, and is a first source of consult when the research topic is on Africa and its peoples.
C. James Schmidthas been selected to receive the 1990 Robert B. Downs Intellectual Freedom Award from the University of Illinois Graduate School of Library and Information Science. Schmidt has served as the chair of the ALA Intellectual Freedom Committee three times and is the current president of the Freedom to Read Foundation. He was nominated for outstanding and inspiring leadership throughout his career. Among the many instances cited in the letter of nomination was his role in opposing the FBI Library Awareness Program: “He was central to fashioning the ALA response to this grave threat to individual rights. He proved to be a subtle and skillful strategist… and an arresting and effective spokesperson for library concerns to the FBI, in Congressional hearings, and to the media. Schmidt remains an active and key player in ongoing efforts to shut down FBI intrusions into libraries once and for all,” the citation continues. The award will be presented in Chicago on January 12,1991, during ALA midwinter.
Suzanne Thorinhas been appointed chief of the general reading rooms division at the Library of Congress after serving as acting chief for 2 years. Thorin came to LC in 1980 as head of the music section at the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, after being music librarian with the rank of associate professor at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She has held several positions at LC, including head of the Research Facilities Section, which provides special services to scholars using the Library’s general collections, and assistant chief of the general reading rooms division. Her MLS and master’s in music history are from the University of Michigan.
William Welburnhas been named diversity and special services librarian at the University of Iowa Libraries, Iowa City, a new professional position created to strengthen the outreach efforts of the libraries. Welburn will work with individuals from various campus offices and programs and with student groups to identify activities to address the needs of minority students, students academically at risk, and students with disabilities in gaining the basic library and information skills required to be successful in their academic programs. In addition to identifying the needs of students, the outreach program is committed to identifying ways to enhance service to minority and female untenured faculty. Welburn previously served on the faculties of the library schools at Atlanta University and Rutgers University and as head of bibliographic instruction at William Paterson College.
Christopher Wrightis the new chief of the Library of Congress loan division, which is responsible for all loans of materials from the Library’s collection. Wright was named assistant chief of the division in 1988, having served for 6 years as head of the loan reference section and interlibrary loan. Wright came to LC in 1975 from the position of assistant director of the ALA Washington office. He holds an MLS from Catholic University.

Retirements
Nancy Steen, rare books librarian in the Center for Archival Collections at Bowling Green State University, retired in May.
Frances Povsic, head librarian at the curriculum resource center of the Bowling Green State University Libraries, retired July 1 but will continue working in the curriculum resource center on a part-time basis.
Death
Paul D. Berrisford, associate professor at the University of Minnesota Libraries, Minneapolis, and director of central technical services from 1972 through 1983, died September 28 after a lengthy illness. Berrisford had been active in ALA, the Minnesota Library Association, the Twin Cities Cataloging Roundtable, and AAUP. As a member of the Library Resources and Technical Services Division (LRTS), Berrisford served first as secretary and later as chair of the Heads of Technical Services, Directors of Large Research Libraries Committee. He served ALA and LRTS in many other assignments as well, including that of assistant editor for the divisional publication. In 1977, he authored The Tears Work in Cataloging and Classification: 1976. He was a member of the North Central Accreditation Team and the board of directors of the Universal Serials and Book Exchange. He was active both locally and nationally in the Antique Automobile Assocation, worked as a volunteer at the St. Paul Seminary Library helping to codify library procedures, and volunteered many hours to the St. Paul-Ramsey Medical Center Senior Information Service.
Katie Holum, 65, head music librarian and assistant professor at the University of Minnesota for 41 years, died of cancer July 30. Katie had served as music librarian since 1950 and had taught a class in music bibliography at the university for two decades. An active musicican, she performed in recitals throughout the years and was organist in many Lutheran churches in the Twin Cities. From 1981 to 1982 she served as the first woman president of the congregation at Central Lutheran Church. She was honored by her alma mater, Luther College, with a distinguished alumni award in 1977.
Valerie Roberts, rare books cataloger at the University of Minnesota Libraries, died suddenly and unexpectedly from an aneurism on July 29. She had been a catalog librarian with the Twin Cities University Libraries since 1969. In addition, she was a professional mezzo soprano and was dedicated to the study of holistic health care. Roberts was a member of ACRL, LITA, RASD, and RTSD.

We use Xywrite III+ for word processing, but we translate files from other major programs. When submitting a diskette with a file created by another word processing program, it is best to also include an ASCII text file.
Always send a paper copy of your manuscript along with the diskette, just in case we cannot read your file.
If you can neither send a diskette nor transmit via ALANET, submit three paper copies in a standard typeface such as Courier or Pica. Please avoid sending proportional or oversize typefaces. Do not fax articles unless you are requested to.
